Well, if it was me, I'd use a black 'sharpie' permanent marker, then
I'd have someone put a couple coats of clear lacquer over the whole
guitar body. Of course, I don't really know, it's just that your note
had no replies and I thought it could use one.

| Get a laundry marker. I've found them to be about the most permanent
things around. Makes sense, if you figure they have to hold up to
getting washed all the time. Seem to mark on just about anything, too.
I guess I'd still recommend a coat of lacquer if you want it to last
forever. Test whatever it is you would use to coat it against the
marker ink before you get the signature, to make sure they're
compatible.

| If somebody ever got near my strat with a pen, they'd have to have it
surgically removed (their arm, hand and the pen) from whence the sun
don't shine, but if you were to let someone actually sign yer
instrument, the laundry marker and clear laquer would probably do it...

| I've also read that some people get clear pickguard material (like the
thin stuff used on acoustics) and will put that over signatures. You
might try roughing up the existing finish with a little sandpaper so
that the marker will take better.

I dunno, man, my EB-0 has a nice finish, but if Jack Bruce wanted to
sign it I think I'd let him. You mean to tell me you wouldn't want
<your favorite guitar god>'s signature on your Strat forever?

just not into that. I'd rather have a signed album / CD of someone I
really liked.

>> here ya go Pal.....if I were in the presence of EC, or Steve Morse,
or Gary Moore or any of the guys I would die to meet, I would be all
over myself to get an autographed picture or album/CD cover, but I
would NOT, repeat NOT let any of those guys (after all they are just
guys who are masters of their trades) screw up my guitars! It just
seems kinda Mickey Mouse anyway......I respect those guys, but I'm not

| I'm not an autograph hound. I've met Morse a bunch of times and never
asked for one. Oddly enough I have two actual autographs of his, but
they "came with" things: my Steve Morse "Frankenstein" guitar has a
real autograph on the headstock (serial #21 of 50), and for being among
the first 100 to order his first instructional cassette I got an
autographed copy.
However, I might want him to autograph my copy of his very first demo
record ("The Great Spectacular") largely because it might increases
it's resale value.
But I've also thought about having another autograph put on the Morse
model guitar. There used to be an ad with his picture in the guitar
mags that had a quote that I really remember liking but can't remember
exactly (something like "Don't be better to be better, be better to be
different").
If I could remember that, I'd like to have him sign the back of my
Morse guitar with that so that when I play it, I have something to
remind me of what the goal is.
What that saying means to me is "The purpose of practice isn't to
achieve a physical goal, but rather to break physical limitations
to expressing yourself."
...or some shit like that... ;-)

SEVERAL WELL-KNOWN GUITAR PLAYERS ARRESTED IN DEFACING INCIDENTS
(AP)
Three internationally known guitar players, Eric Clapton, Eric Johnson,
and Steve Morse, were arrested yesterday in separate incidents for
forcibly applying their autographs to guitars owned by fans.
In each case, the fans were employees of Digital Equipment Corporation,
and several of the victims had previously stated that they would not
permit autographs or signatures to be applied to their instruments
in any case. Suspicions were aroused, however, when the close friend
of one victim insisted that his friend "really would" let Eric
Clapton sign his guitar.
In a similar development, another victim was heard to remark that
he might let Eric Johnson sign "the back of my guitar." A third victim
remarked that he has never approached Steve Morse for his autograph
but actually had two copies of it anyway.
Stray comments and rumors of this type have confused the issue for
perplexed officials in both cities. It is not known why performing
artists of the stature of Clapton, Johnson, and Morse would insist
on defacing the equipment of fans in the first place.

2625.29 | An alternative method of autographing... | IOSG::CREASY | Goodnight out there... whatever you are | Wed Nov 25 1992 10:40 | 15 |
| I read an interview with Jeff Beck once, about autographing guitars...
...apparently, he did a session with Tina Turner, and at the end, said,
"Don't bother with a fee, just autograph my guitar". So, she tried
signing it using a marker pen, and of course it wiped right off. And
they're thinking of finding a way that's really permanent, so she pulls
a HUGE switchblade out of her purse, and says "maybe I should use
this?". "Okay", says Beck, so she carved her autograph into his
guitar.
Maybe you should investigate that method a little more? :^)
FWIW
