2588.0. "MTV Video Awards" by ESKIMO::AUSTIN () Thu Sep 10 1992 10:02

Anyone see the bass player for Nirvana last night clobber himself
with his bass guitar? Threw the thing up WAY up in the air and it
came crashing down on his head. While he was trying to locate his
marbles the lead player/singer was trashing his amps ala Hendrix.

Yeah! I saw that, pretty brutal! A P-bass right in the forehead.
Looked like he got it hard!

It was clear that he knocked something loose, since he started calling
    for Axl immediately after that...

2588.3MTV Comedy Show..WMOIS::RAYThu Sep 10 1992 12:0233
The show last night, made me ashamed to admit that I'm a musician....

Like we don't have enough problems today with the kids, then we give
them this sort of crap to watch, and the real sad part about it is
alot of the guys are old enough to be grand-parents, and they still
    haven't figured it out yet.

Bobby Brown - What happened, all of a sudden you decide to make your
song a rap tune, (not) he couldn't hit the notes, and
for some reason he took it out on MTV????

Howard Stern - Well what can be said, this guy obviously "rode a short
bus" to school, and to be quite frank, he should of
never gotten off. Who were the producers, of this show,
                   they couldn't have been serious.

Axel Rose - The comment he made about his award having nothing to do with
Michael Jackson, really hit home for me. For years music
has been to a large extent segregated, and its taken a lot
of years and work for it to come this far, statements like
that only help set us back. Michael is one of the few
entertainers that features artists from all styles of music
on his albums, Eddie Van Halen (Beat It) Slash (Black and
White), Jam (Heavy D, and the Boys), and so on. At least
                he wasn't drunk this time..............Maybe he should've
                been.....

After the performances I saw last night, I can think of several more
names to add to the "I JUST DON'T GET IT" topic...

I'm sure they will repeat it. They replayed it again immediately after
the first broadcast (which is how I got to see the first part, which
I'd missed). I'm sure it'll be on again sometime in the next week or
    two.

However, unless there's something specific you want to see, I'd say
don't waste your time. If there is something specific you wanna see, I
say tape it first and fast forward past the rest.

I also like Nirvana, and thought they were actually a highlight of the
show. I mean, they sounded like they are supposed to sound. Howard
Stern (Fartman, right?) was pathetic. Metallica was actually trying
to say something serious upon accepting their award, and this eeeeediot
is ruining the whole thing. Shoot the producer! Pearl Jam came off
    well too, I thought.

Metallica were dumb -- not like Lars hogged the platform or anything,

I liked Pearl Jam the best-didn't really care for them when I first
started listening to them though. Now I'm starting to like them more
and more each time I hear them.
The Peppers are a wild bunch-it was funny watching the lead singer give
that other band member an airplane spin...I was just waiting to see
them go crashing off the stage. Wonder if the bass player's going to
be banned from MTV after the "demonstration" he gave up on top of the
    podium?

I didn't think Slash played badly (ya know, for Slash), but his tone surely
SUCKED big time... Axl annoys me anyway, so I won't commnet further, but
I will say that I'd never seen a "MIDI Grand" before.

Nirvana did sound like Nirvana (errr, like them :) - I just get tired of the
simpleton themes of their tunes. For instance:

(Sung to the tune of Teen Spirit)

> I thought the GnR/Elton thing was the highlight, for me (except Slash
> being drunk and playing like $#!t!).

    To follow your example...

GnR/Elton the highlight of the show? NOT!! I thought it was really
weak. You couldn't even hear Elton, I don't think they even connected
an output from his "Midi Grand"... I did think Axl's voice sounded the
best I've heard it in a long time, but Slash's tone was so OFF that I
couldn't deal with him. I usually really like his tone too. I didn't
think his playing was all that terrible.

Nirvana? Simpleton lyrics? Not in my book. They're lyrics are far
better then most of the stuff coming out of the record mill these days.
They're interesting and relatively cliche free. They paint a picture,
and impression, without actually hitting you in the face with an
explicit meaning. So you think about it and interpret it for yourself.

Whatcha mean, Rick? I think what those two bands are doing is very
different. Nirvana is much more of a punk based band, where Pearl Jam
is more like a rock band with added intensity. I like them both quite
a lot, and I think they're both doing what they want to do.

Didn't mean to offend ya or anything, Brian, that's just how I think of
it myself. I guess everyone's standard for a "normal" rock band would
be different. The point was that Nirvana is going for a hard-edged
punk based sound that I Pearl Jam isn't. The thing that impresses me
about Pearl Jam is the "intensity" they put into the songs.

    Greg
2588.26More misguided ramblings on my part.SOLVIT::SNORAT::OLOUGHLINThe fun begins at 80!Mon Sep 14 1992 13:0240

Yah, I guess so. Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden. They all hit
me as... [Crap, can't think of the right way to say it without causing
an uproar, or at least a debate ala grande'.]

...as cutting edge bands. I guess I'll retract what I said 'bout
them. They are indeed different. (Understatement of the month award.)

How about taking it from this slant. I think Nirvana would be a
MUCH better band if they took their music more seriously. Meaning the
musical output of the performance - not the slam dance, smash my axe,
    jump-on-top-o-crowd, spit, bash-crash-trash-amp.

Last week I caught the warm up band for P.I.L., "Chainsaw Kittens".
Now going on the line from the tune "Rise", "Anger is an energy, anger
is an energy..." This band did nothing but play two, three chords
which well could have been just one chord. They were just beatin hell
out of whatever they happen to be holdin and the lead singer, ah,
screamer was beltin out nothing but, errr, screams. I understand the
concept. Matter of fact, there were a couple of tunes that would have
worked well, *if* they happened to have played them instead of SCREAM.
Me gets the concept. Me gets the idea. (I like Henry Rollings's stuff.)

Then Johnny walks on stage. They conveyed what "Chainsaw Kittens"
were trying to say - and the sound was good. The message was there.
    The energy was there.

So I sit back with a Bud in hand and check out Nirvana and wonder
who doesn't get it. Me, or them.

      -Rick.

The editorial does not reflect the opinions of this

Ya know, after the Video Music Awards, there's been all this talk about
Pearl Jam and Nirvana and Soundgarden, etc........

Am I the only bothered by the fact that these bands are always mentioned in
the same breath, like they are the same band??? I mean, I *love* Pearl Jam,
dislike Soundgarden, and I'm undecided about Nirvana. I think they are
three _totally_ separate groups with very individual sounds, and I could
NEVER get the confused with one another!

It reminds me of when poeple talked about "corporate rock" in the early 80's.
They always said that Kansas, Styx, Journey, Foreigner, REO Speedwagon, etc,
were all the same band. Come on, now - they don't sound ANYTHING alike to
people who actually _listen_ to the music!!!

But, they all come from the same circuit, all broke through in
the "alternative" vein, and all have (over)achieved asignificant
level of success, however unlikely it may have seemed 3 years ago.

That is what ties these bands together.....although not the same
