| I didn't know they made amps either. But I saw Jim McGuinn in Atlanta
last year and low and behold, he had one. I had to blink my eyes
several times to make sure I wasn't halucinating (one of those 60's
flashbacks).

2563.2 | Rick Amps Go Back A Long Ways | RICKS::ROST | I'm getting cement all over you | Tue Aug 04 1992 14:59 | 14 |
| Rickenbacker has been making amps since the days when they started
making electric instruments (lap steels, back in the 30s). At one
point, Led Zeppelin even used Rick amps (the first US tour was done
with them)! Steppenwolf also was an endorsee in the 60s.
Rickenbacker was marketing a newer amp line in the early eighties and
for a while had some amps marked Rickenbacker/Road. More recently I
saw some power amps labelled Rickenbacker/Sony!!??!!
They are certainly not very common in *any* vintage.
Mars Bonfire
P.S. If you think Rick amps are rare, how about Polytone *guitars*?

One of the Rickenbacker amps used the name - Transonic. Actually
touting the fact that they are solid state. They also used a unique
Trapezoid shaped cabinet. Collectors items?
I believe that the original ROAD amps (solid state as well) were
done by Bud Ross (of Kustom electonics, Ross equipment). I actually
like the rugged look of their 4 X 12 cabs, if I had bought one, I'd
probably still have it!

| A friend of mine has an old Rick amp. Looked cool, I've never heard
it. He said he didn't think it was worth much of anything.

I own a Rickenbacker Road. It's solid-state with a single 12" speaker,
built-in reverb, vibrato and distortion.
IMO it doesn't compare to a tube amp.
Then again all I remember is playing a Super Reverb and a '67 Tele.
I miss them,
Bob

2563.6 | Some had huge speakers... | GVA05::BERGMANS | | Thu Aug 06 1992 02:06 | 17 |
| If Transonic is the name of the amps that Rickenbacker made... and if my
memory does not fool me.., they had an amazing bass amp which included
a huge 30" inch speaker. Yes ...30 inch.
I never saw the amp itself but I have seen in an electronic parts show,
years and years ago (about 15 to 18 years) the speaker that they have
been using.
I think I must have a picture and some facts on that amp in my books at
home.
I have a look at it.
Regards
Jean-Paul (who in the past "only had two 18 inch speakers for his bass
and always wanted more)

| Yup about the 30"er. It was/is made by EV. This monster was designed
for 'crowd control' (no kidding)! Placed in cabinets the size of
two freezers, they were holisted above the crowds, and a VERY lo
freg signal was fed thru them. Made ya lose control of many
functions....catch my drift. It seems that the Goverment like
the idea of folks dumping in their pants. It was rarely used,
but the speaker is STILL made today.
They (EV) even made tables out of defective ones.
A true story.
