2559.0. "Leslie West/Mountain" by RICKS::ROST (Evil twin of Billy Ray Cyrus) Thu Jul 30 1992 15:33

I thought there was already a Leslie West note in here somewhere?

Anyway, since about 1975 the only Mountain releases in print were the
spotty "Best Of" set (marred by lousy song selection) and the truly
wretched "Twin Peaks". Until now, that is...

As part of the CBS/Sony Legacy reissue series, the first two Mountain
biscuits, "Climbing" and "Nantucket Sleighride" are back in print,
    budget price, too.

Remember "Theme from an Imaginary Western"? Ny favorite. Geez, I
hope that wasn't a West, Bruce and Lang thing!

Leslie's solos in 'Theme' and 'Silver Paper' were two of my all-time
faves. They were really beautiful, had a bit of emotion to them, and
perfectly complimented that grinding, growling ensemble sound that
Mountain had. And, they were relatively simple, not flash.

Ironic, though....'Sleighride' has a track on it called 'My Lady',
a kind of pretty ballad written by Felix Pappalardi about and for
Gail Collins...the woman who eventually shot and killed him.

Too bad CBS didn't reissue the original West release 'Mountain' (the
one with 'Long Red' on it) along with the others....would have made a
good finishing touch to a box set.

P.S. Whatever happened to N.D. Smart III, anyway ?

N.D. Smart worked as a session drummer for years. He turned up on some
Todd Rundgren albums, also worked with Gram Parsons.

Our friend Neal Orsi tells me that N. D. Smart was the drummer in Barry
and The Remains, a mid-sixties New England favorite. At least I think
that's what he said. Neal, correct me if I'm wrong.

Gail Collins shot and killed Felix Pappalardi!?
    What year was that?

    My brother's first wife, a NYC jet-setter (<-- set terminology/1965)
claimed she used to date him.

I think Pappalardi was killed in '86.

Refresh my memory: I know Pappalardi's name is credited all over
Cream's 'Wheels of Fire', but was it he that played the solo trumpet
part in 'Pressed Rat and Warthog' ? I always liked that line and the
    background woodwinds...
