2556.0. "Marshall Valvestate amps" by NEWOA::DALLISON (and a start of a new one) Mon Jul 27 1992 01:07

    I did a dir/title on 'valvestate' and couldn't find anything.

    I bought a Marshall 8100 Valvestate head on Saturday after trying it in
    a shop and it ROCKS!!!

    Without any other effects other than my Boss Parametric eq stomp box I
    have got THE Zakk Wylde tone.

    The heads are very light and compact and are very versatile. (The eq is
    very un-Marshall - ie it actually does something!). Its got reverb, twin
    channels and all the crunch and overdrive I'd EVER want. You even get a
    free foot pedal with it and they're at a VERY reasonable price.

    Check 'em out.

    -Tony (Who is gonna feel a pratt if this note already exists and the
           amps has been given a slagging off).

    BTW,

    Its a 100watt head and its about one third the size of a regular
    Marshall head. Looks kinda weird perched on top of a couple of 4x12's.

 Only one 12AX7 in the preamp stage. The rest in (^%!@$#) solid state.
 Maybe good amp but not A Marshall.

    Don't be a snob, of course its 'A' bloody Marshall - whaddaya think it
    is ?

    FWIW Its sounds better than ANY other Marshall I've heard (including my
    JCM800).

    I hope so!

    Still haven't tried it at rehearsal yet.

Well I've recently bought a valvestate 8240 combo, and I think
it sounds amazing. The stereo chorus sound is so good, I leave it
on for almost everything now. The footswitch switches between
normal and boost channels, and can turn on/off the chorus. There's
no way anyone can say this isn't a Marshall, just 'cos it's 'only'
got one valve, the sound is just pure power.
Full marks to Marshall engineers for this one !!

2556.7RAVEN1::JERRYWHITERen, what's `TFSO' mean ?Mon Jul 27 1992 07:3917
    Ah yes .... Mosvalve memories ...

    Day 1 - "Man, this thing *cranks* ! I love it, I adore it, I want it to
             bear my children ..."
    Day 14 - "Kinda thin, I need an EQ pedal ..."
    Day 47 - "This overdrive just ain't happening, I guess it's 'cuz it's
             solid state ..."
    Day 48 - from a fellow guitar player, "hey, why you using a stomp
    	     distortion with a Marshall ?".

    My point ... I just hope that Marshall really has a VALVE tone built in
    this thing. That's what they were screaming with the Mosfet line, and
    they missed the boat in a BIG way.

    Bottom line, if it sounds good to you, then all's well ! 8^)

    Scary (who needs a 100W Laney twin ... 8^)

    I already use a Parametric equaliser with the unit to beef the tone up
    a tad - other than that the tone certainly *is* happening and blows
    away my old Marshall AND Laney amps.

Yeah, I gotta chime in here too.

I haven't played thru one yet extensively, but a local band here in town
has a fellow using a 8100 (hundred watt hybrid)...and his sound is ROOLIN'.
With just the 8100 head and one lonely 4x12. Very "brown", but plenty of OD.

I was skeptical when I saw the head, cuz I had visions of this being like the
MOSFET series...It surely didn't sound like one though.

      I agree that the VALVEstates sound a lot better than the MOSFET
    series. I saw a dude try a MOSFET 100 in a store and he bought it.
    Not only did I think that amp sounded bad for a Marshall, it sounded
    bad period! At least there is one ECC83 tube in the larger VALVEstates!

      But solid state-wise, nothing beats my REXX 1602!! B-}!

    MY TONE PROBLEMS ARE NOW OVER. I now have the most righteous tone.

    Now, anyone wanna buy a JCM800 heasd and a digitech GSP21 ? 8^)
2556.15FINS::VMESITEWed Jul 29 1992 06:5612
    The Valvestate amps were designed to be a lower-priced Marshall,
    and NO ONE thought they would go over so well. I plan on getting one
    and re-working it to use a better output stage (Mosfets, natch)
    running Class-A. I've ot the schematic and the plan I have works,
    so it should be interesting.

    Does anyone remember the OLD solid state Marshalls? They were REAL
    dogs. TOO many times, UK companies make SS units, and it's not in
    their blood. The BEST ones were H/H.

   Is there an M-word dealer somewhere in or around the Springs who has this
   line in stock? I kinda liked the MOSfet Marshalls so should probably look
   at these just for grins.

   Barring that, does anyone have a model lineup with prices they'd be willing
   to post? US dollars, please. :-)

   Thanks in advance,

    ProSound and Cidadel Music (the one in the mall) are the two authorized
    Marshall dealers in the Springs. I've never seen a Valvestate at
    ProSound, but I don't go there very often. I've seen the smaller
    Valvestate models (the ones that don't have the preamp tube, I believe)
    at Cidadel Music.

    If you're up for a little drive, you might try Drum City & Guitar Land,
    or National Speaker in Denver. Both are Marshall dealers and have
    excellent prices.

2556.21"A Marshall has CrUnCh?"SALEM::STIGTue Aug 18 1992 11:245
    This can't be true...Marshall finally came out with a crunch/distortion
    amp...You don't have to modify it? That's news to me. I'd have to try
    it first to believe it. The only model I know of that's a great
    "tweeker" is the "ARTIST". This is a great head...It SMOKES!! You can
    pick one up used--I've seen around $300-$350.
2556.22ZYMRGY::samUp on Cripple CreekTue Aug 18 1992 12:256
   Strange, I've never had problems getting "crunch" out of my Marshall
   (JCM800 model 2205 - master volume, etc). As a matter of fact, even on
   my Strat I have to back off on the volume to NOT get crunch. Guess I
   haven't played enough bad ones yet.

2556.23"HOWS THE SUSTAIN?"SALEM::STIGWed Aug 19 1992 11:012
    Hows the sustain?? Especially on the single note playing? Does it
    ring...Do you have to stop it...
2556.24SSDEVO::LAMBERTUp on Cripple CreekWed Aug 19 1992 11:384
   Great sustain! And this is coming from someone who likes to cop Santana
   licks. The master volume and channel switching help this, though.
