2553.0. "Tablature software?" by WHELIN::ALAN () Mon Jul 13 1992 06:54

Does anyone know of a software package that allows you to create guitar
tablature? I know there are many packages available for doing standard
notation, but I haven't seen one for tablature.

I'm not aware of any such software like that, but such software is
concievable now with SOME (but not all MIDI guitar) units.

That is, you could play something on your MIDI guitar and the software
would tab it out for you.

The key feature that is needed from the guitar-to-MIDI driver is the
ability to send each string out on a SEPARATE MIDI channel, otherwise
the unit would have no way of knowing which string which notes were
    played on.

Most MIDI drivers can do this, but there are quite a few that can not.

Of course, there are a lot of things that you'd want in standard tab
that the software couldn't recognize, such as "play this note as a
harmonic", and "do a pick scratch here" and stuff like that. But
of course, it would do 99% of the hardest work which is tabbing out
    the regular notes and chords.

The Copyist DTP (from Dr. T) can take your sequences (from your MIDI
guitar) and translate them into standard notation in Postscript format.
You could import that into another package and add the tab lines. I'll
look to see if the Copyist can do the whole thing (I've just scratched
the surface myself), but I've gotta tell you that it's gonna be much
faster to do this by hand.

2553.3Just how cool is the software these _daze_?SOLVIT::SNORAT::OLOUGHLINThe fun begins at 80!Tue Jul 21 1992 08:5732

       Speaking of which.

I was toying with the idea of a DECpc 420sx. I could not justify
the purchase considering there is a couple of million dollars of
equipment with a hundred yards of where I sit. Why buy one?

Then I thought of the Yamaha YS200 synthesizer and drum machine
I have at home and was wondering if I could get some kick ass software
for the PC that would allow me to compose on it. Along the lines of...

      - Assign a voice
      - Play a string on the keyboard and have it appear on the PC.
      - Edit the string on the PC, run it, (and hear it.) Sequencing.
      - Assign another voice (bass line), and do the same. As part of the
         same sheet music created above.
      - Assign the drum voices and noodle that all out.
      - Run it all
      - Be happy with it.
      - Grab guitar and go wacko.

Will the PC that are being sold in house handle this?

Remember, I am a midi-moron. (Hence the questions.)

Yeah, you can do all of that, easily. It's even easier with software
like Band-in-a-Box. Definitely go check out COMMUSIC and the
    beginners' notes.

BTW. The reason I didn't put this into COMMUSIC was...

Most, ('cept one in particular) tend to be more guitar
    than midi. 8^)

I was looking for a recommendation from those who might
suggest the easiest, simplest, most user friendly package
they have ever seen. At the same time, weigh there suggestion
against personal goals. Guitar! Yoose guyz!

I am sure the comm folks would know about it. But they
might not understand why I have a pick on my keyboard and get
mad when no sound comes out.
