| How much are non-voting dues?
and, that being said,
Can you give an example of the savings on CDs?
\Gary

2550.2 | good try, but... | EZ2GET::STEWART | Cordless Bungee Jump Instructor | Wed Jul 08 1992 18:12 | 7 |

$65, $7/CD, and non-voters aren't eligible for the Awards Guide.
That's supplied to voters to encourage them to listen to what's
happening. To clarify, almost all of the CDs are offered at $7 per
disc. So, a 4 volume box set goes for $28. There's a small handling
charge.

| So if I understand you correctly, if you are a non-voting member, you
can't get the Awards Guide, therefore you can't get the cheap CDs,
right?
Well thanks anyway,
\Gary
(Curious to know how many people in this notes file, or at Digital for
that matter, have had >5 recorded works published.)

Remember that's songs, not albums...

There seem to be a number of people in COMMUSIC and the MUSIC
conference that have been producing and promoting their own albums,
cassettes, or CDs. They're eligible if they've got 6 cuts or more on
their media.
If all you're looking for is a record club, this ain't it.

2550.6 | I don't understand | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Black Sheets Of Rain | Thu Jul 09 1992 10:56 | 5 |
| It doesn't have to be through a recognized label? Anyone can fire up
their 4-track, record 6 songs, sell a copy to a friend for $.01 and
qualify?
Greg
|
2550.7 | hey, I recognize that label! | EZ2GET::STEWART | Cordless Bungee Jump Instructor | Thu Jul 09 1992 17:15 | 16 |
|
Hey, I don't know about the fine print. I don't konw how they define
"commercial release" and I don't know how they check it. That's
probably why I have to "sponsor" the applicant. So, theoretically,
some deviant could try to jimmy his way in... but then again, I have
been following the trials and tribulations of the people that have
written notes about marketing their music, so if someone pops up out of
the blue with some half-baked, low grade cassette I have a decent
chance of weeding them out.
So, as far as the recognized label stuff goes, no, it can be your own
label as I interpret the rules. And when you get down to it, why
shouldn't your own label be enough? Isn't that how Chess records and
Motown got started?

2550.8 | additional information on non-voting benefits | EZ2GET::STEWART | Cordless Bungee Jump Instructor | Mon Jul 20 1992 15:25 | 23 |
| I got an Email question about non-voting member benefits from one of
our ROM-noters. In the quest to deliver accurate information I called
my chapter office to get some questions answered. The info that
follows is from the text of my reply to the ROM-noter.
As a non-voting member, you're eligible for almost all of the
same discounts that voting members get. These include instrument
discounts from some of the major chains (but nothing that you
couldn't get yourself with some hard bargaining), discounted/free
subscriptions to industry magazines (Mix, EQ, Guitar Player, &
Keyboard to name a few), discounts on studio time, educational
programs, restaurants, clubs, amusement parks, and free or
reduced membership charges for related professional
organizations.
You'll get a Membership Discount Directory with your materials.
I just called the Chapter office to verify all of this
information and found out that you are indeed entitled to all of
these benefits, as well as the monthly NARAS Awards Guide. The
Awards Guide is the discounted list of CDs and other
entertainment media that was previously only available to voting
members.

2550.9 | sounding better | GJO001::REITER | | Mon Jul 20 1992 15:38 | 14 |
| OK, let's try this again, and, no, I am not just looking for a record
club, but for $65/yr I am not looking for a charity, either. :7)
You say that non-voting members are now "eligible for almost all of the
same discounts that voting members get". Can you elaborate on the
'almost' part?
Does a non-voting member still need to be sponsored?
Is there a number we can call or place we can write to get generic
membership (albeit non-voting) information?
Thanks - seriously,
\Gary

2550.10 | clarification | EZ2GET::STEWART | Cordless Bungee Jump Instructor | Mon Jul 20 1992 16:28 | 12 |
|
I called the Chapter Office while I was writing that reply.
Consequently, the word "almost" should have been deleted. The only
difference between voting and non-voting membership is eligibility to
participate in the Grammy Awards process. *ALL OTHER* membership
benefits are available to non-voting members.
"Sponsorship" is only necessary if you're shooting for voting status.
I will be glad to post any information you'd like to have...might as
well do it for you and anyone else that's interested...
