2451.0. "CARLOS RIOS" by BRUMMY::LAWTON (Well, stab a dog and call me Eric..) Wed Feb 26 1992 02:41

Has anyone heard anything of a guy called Carlos Rios? I only have one
example of his work, which is the "Brother To Brother" album, by Gino
Vannelli (Brian Rost, sorry to mention this album *again* - yes, I do
have more than one album in my collection!).

I have the feeling that Carlos Rios may be a pseudonym for someone
else. His style is reminiscent of Larry Carlton, as is his sound. I do
know he plays some excellent solos, though.

Anyone else heard him/have any other material featuring his work?

Yeah, I know of him. His work with Vannelli was outstanding. I saw Gino
when he relased that album and Carlos blew me away. He also played with
Jean Luc Ponty in those days. I think that's where I saw/heard him first.
I dont't know that much, but I think we've all heard him plenty as a
studio musician. I seem to remember that he played "Ride like the Wind"
and some other tunes on Cristopher Cross's first album (Eric Johnson
played on one tune as well - I think it was "The Light is On"). Also
played for Lionel Ritchie though at the moment I can't remember any of
    the names of tunes.

I'll agree that he does remind me of a Larry Carlton with a Santana
    influence.

btw - "Brother to Brother" is a *great* album. I wondered what happened
to Gino after that album until I heard him in an interview last year
say that up to that point, everything came to easy for him. He said he
broke away just to sort of get his mind right. Probably means he fell
into trouble with drugs. He was a really good looking dude, but the
interview I saw, he looked like he'd aged 20 years.

Aha! Someone else does own "Brother To Brother"! Yep, damned good
    album.

Regarding G.V. - I have read of other albums since "BTB", but have seen
nothing in the UK other than "Prince and The Pauper" (which I don't
have) and "Gist Of The Gemini" (which I do own - another good album),
    both of which pre-date "BTB".

Pretty sad if he's burned out; the man had an incredible voice and a
    fine songwriting ability.

    Thanks for the info

Gino has released several albums since Brother to Brother.
Black Cars, Night Walker, and his newest in 91, Inconsolable
Man. I guess I'm the only one who saw him last fall at the
Paridise in Boston. It was fabulous!!

He said he burned out on gigging, not music. Also, he burned
out on sleeping around on his wife. Guess he woke up one
    	morning and suddenly appreciated her.

And, as usual, his guitarist (no idea who) was ridiculously
great!! Not much guitar on Inc. Man but it's a great album
nonetheless. But Brother to Brother is certainly his most
rockin' album musicianshipwise. Great drumming too, yes?

    Re -1

Yeah, the drums on "BTB" are pretty spectacular; although much of the
sound is due to production, Mark Craney can bang a fairly decent bit of
    wood and plastic.

Catch him also on "A" by Jethro Tull and "Imaginary Voyager" by
    Jean-Luc Ponty.

BTW, wasn't "Night Walker" about either a transvestite or a
trans-sexual? I remember reading a review of it in another notesfile.

Talking of "BTB", does anyone have anything with bass player Leon Gaer
guesting? Brian Rost has put me straight about the bass sysnthesizer he
used on "BTB" (thanks again, Brian - I go to test the one I intend to
buy in a few weeks time) and I'd like to know he appears on anyone
    elses efforts, synthesized or otherwise.

Leon Gaer is on some of Phil Keaggy's older albums. Apparently he did
a lot of sessions with Christian musicians during the 80s.

This topic is funny. I had to chuckle thinking that the originator asks
about Carlos Rios and we digress to Leon Gaer and the drummer for Gino
Vanelli. Good Lord we guitar noters can talk endlessly about the weirdest
    stuff, eh?

    "sakman"

btw - I'm not complaining about the digression. Don't confuse me for
one of our more sensitve types. I just got a chuckle. As for myself, I
like conversation regardless of topic oriented or not.

    Sakman,
What does your PN " " mean? Every
time I see it, it drives me nuts. ;-)

Was anyone else listening to CD 96.9 this morning at 7:35 ?

Well, I heard a great, live version of "I Just Wanna Stop"
by Gino Vannelli. It's from his new album, "Live in Montreal".

I saw Gino last year at the Paradise in Boston and it was really
great!! So much more power than his studio albums yet just as
	subtle.

From this morning's song, this must be a great sounding CD.
I was able to really crank it up!!!

Hope it's already out cuz I want it today!!!

Tom (of the old Gino Carlton Band)

Let's hope A&M (if Gino's still with 'em) get their corporate act in
gear and release it over here. Care to post a review when it comes out?

I picked up the new "Live in Montreal" CD last night.
Strawberries in Framingham had one, Sudbury and Acton
	didn't have any yet.

As I hoped, it's a fabulous recording of the tour that I saw.
It was recorded at "Le Spectrum" in Montreal, Nov 18, 1990.

It's very powerful with agressive keys and drums ala the
"Brother to Brother" era. I've only listened thru once but
I must say that "In the Name of Money" is worth the price of
the CD - wow, what a groove!! That tune floored me in person
	too!!

Joe Vannelli	Keys, Keys bass, programming, backing vocals
	Enzo Todesco	Drums
	Mike Miller	Guitars and bass
	Maxayne Lewis	Backing vocals
	Richard Beaudet Sax

Carlos played on a bunch of fusion albums I bought back in the late
seventies. I'm trying to remember which...George Duke maybe?

    Ron,
Hmm, fusion sounds about right for his style - can you dig into the
memory vaults and pull some names out?

Carlos Rios plays on Chick Corea's 1986 Elektric Band album.
I suspect he's on other Elektric Band albums as well.

You sure on that? Frank Gambale did the guitar work on the second
EB release "Lightyears". I thought the band was stable at least thru
    that point...
