2438.0. "TRACE ELLIOTT - THE KING'S NEW CLOTHES?" by BRUMMY::LAWTON (Well, stab a dog and call me Eric..) Wed Feb 12 1992 02:48
I'll soon be in the market for an amp and want to get my mitts on a
combo, if possible, to make gigging easier (I used to lug a Fender
Bassman 135 around, but I don't want to give my self another hernia!)
One of my colleagues suggested a Trace Elliott and the ones I';ve
looked at and listened to are very nice machines. However, is it all
glitz? OK, they have a neat effects send/return section, so you can go
directly into the amp, graphic equalizers, a DI jack and green lights
when you switch e'm on, but the sound isn't quite as pleasing as, say,
a Marshall, although it's very clean. Peavey also stack up pretty well
(at least, the ones I've listened to do), so what are other noters'
opinions on this? Shell out for a Trace or what? The price difference
is also a big factor, Marshalls being about half the price of a Trace
Elliott.

2438.1 | My opinion .... since ya asked ... 8^) | RAVEN1::JERRYWHITE | Hey you're pretty good - NOT ! | Wed Feb 12 1992 05:09 | 6 |
| Sounds like to me you've already found some shortcomings ... all those
*extra* features you mentioned aren't worth diddley unless you have a
need for them. I'd wager that a Marshall combo would do just as well,
and be a LOT easier on the checkbook ... I'd also plug the Laney combo's.
Scary ....

2438.2 | Guitar or Bass/ | RGB::ROST | I'm not into music, I'm into chaos | Wed Feb 12 1992 07:50 | 20 |
| Are you talking guitar or bass?
Trace bass amps have sort of taken over from the Ampeg SVT as *the*
touring bass stack. I also find the combos too expensive for what they
deliver, but here in the US some of that is that the things are
imported, they must be a bit cheaper in the UK.
The hype is that Trace gear is supposed to last until Armageddon but I
have heard from at least one unhappy user who had constant breakdowns,
this on a $3000 stack is a bit unacceptable.
As far as guitar amps, they have just come out with their first
electric guitar amps, so there's no track record to judge by.
Brian
P.S. As a side issue, since I assume the noter is from the UK, does
Marshall sell much bass gear over there? Here in the US they are
almost a non-presence on the bass market despite offering a full range
of amps from 12 watt combos up to 600 watt stacks.
