2432.0. "Question on PA setup" by WMOIS::MAY_B (IT'S LIKE THE SAME, ONLY DIFFERENT!) Fri Feb 07 1992 10:31

I would like to solicite the collective experience and knowledge of this
confernce to help me solve a problem.

I am a member of a 60's era band that gets together and plays only once or
twice every couple of years. We have been asked to play for a fund raising
event this June. It will be outside with an anticipated 3 to 4 thousand
people per show. We will be the back-up group for a 50's group called
Danny and the Juniors (remember "At the Hop" and "Rock and Roll is here to
Stay"). We are not getting any commitment from Headliner group to use there
PA gear so we have decided to plan for the worse.

This is what we have:

Peavey XR600 (300 watts per side at 2oms)
Peavey SP3's (two)
Three vocal mikes
Rythm guitar = Peavy Bandit 112
Lead = Peavy band 112 + Music Man 4X10 (130 watts)
Bass = Traynor head (200 watts) 2 15 inch speaker cab.
Organ = Fender 4 10's Bass Amp

We are what I would affectionately call a "Garage Band". We do not use any
affects, monitor or mixing board. The only soundman we have ever used was a
friend who would stand at the back of the hall and tell us if we were in
balance or not during a dry run before the gig. We do amazingly well with
this equipment even though we can barely hear our own vocals over the guitars.
The drummer watchs the guitar players for changes. We want to preserve that
type of sound and feeling. The above set up has worked very well for us
with crouds of 400 people in a hall.

Now the Challenge:

Can we add Cabinets or horns along with the SP3's and is there enough
    power in the Peavey.
Can we add power to the XR600 via a kicker AMP
Do we need a mixing board so we can mike the drums and guitar amps. (we have
(6 inputs on the Peavy and use 3.)
Playing outdoors at higher volumes, do we need monitors (we've managed without
		to date!)
Should we even attemp to use what we have?
If not, where can we get the appropriate equipment and what is its approx cost.
Would one cord from the Peavy "line out" to another larger sound system do it
for us? (if they would allow it)
What options do we have.

Thanks in advance for your help.

I've never heard of the opening act not being able to use the PA.
Maybe they won't let you use the PA to its full potential, but that's
    another issue.

Usually for an event like this, the promoter provides the PA, not the
performer. An oldies act like D & J probably doesn't travel with sound
anyway. Talk to the people organizing the thing (obviously you have
    plenty of time). Have fun.

I have to agree with the previous replies - you'll be able to use the
PA that is there for the gig...

However, I'll offer my two cents worth of advice (It might be worth two cents).
:)

No. XR's go as low as four ohms...and you're already loading with two
8 ohm cabs (SP3's) = 4 ohms. You'll fry the XR.

>Can we add power to the XR600 via a kicker AMP

Whats a kicker amp ?? If you mean "can we run from the "power amp" output of
the XR into another power amp for more guts, yes...

>Do we need a mixing board so we can mike the drums and guitar amps. (we have
> (6 inputs on the Peavy and use 3.)

Yep. You can use another mixer on stage to "sub mix" the drums (thats what
takes all the mikes), but it would be more efficient to run directly to the
main mixer with all your mikes, via a snake.

>Playing outdoors at higher volumes, do we need monitors (we've managed without

Wind does funny things to sound, and there is no reflective walls so you'd hear
yourself. Also, the mains will be in front of you. You'll never hear the
vocals. If you place the mains behind you, you'll get feedback from hell.
Monitors are a must. The XR600 might power a pair of monitors if you keep your
stage volume down, but you'll want an EQ to get rid of feedback that the XR
will create.

I wouldn't - not outdoors. Like I said above you might use your XR and SP3's
for monitors. The line out into an 800wt amp would be pretty happenin' for
vocal monitors.

I'm sure that you'll get to use the house system, so I wouldn't sweat it...
But in general it takes a LOT of power to play outside or in a big venue.
Because of the power of the mains, they will be in front of you, so you
won't hear much from them (for monitoring). FWIW - You can rent PA's with
an engineer from $50/day - $250/day (depending).

The original XR600 needs 4 ohms minimum, the 600B and 600C can drive 2
    ohm loads.
