2377.0. "5150 - the Peavey/EVH amp" by FREEBE::REAUME (siZZle on |||6|||) Tue Nov 19 1991 14:43

Well we knew it had to happen sometime. If you haven't seen all the hoopla
about the new Peavey/Eddie Van Halen 5150 amp, then you either don't get any
guitar magazines or live in a cave. Of course there are big full page ads
in the guit mags, but the new Peavey Monitor features extensive info on this
new monster stack.
According to Eddie he got tired of his previous amp (any guesses?) and decided
to get into the market with Peavey. No doubt that will give the amp wide
distribution and publicity. As far as I can tell it comes as one model -
an all-tube 120 watt stack with two 4 X 12 cabs. The first thing that hits you
is the new Peavey logo. It's the same one Peavey has been using for their
pro audio division. It is much more modern and less angular that the logo we
are all familiar with. Inside the Monitor magazine, there's Eddie standing in
front of three full stacks with the tolex colored in his trademark red with
black and white stripes artwork. Gee - is this an option? I'll bet he didn't
pay for them.
In the magazine Eddie mentions he was going for the "brown" sound. He
describes that as a lot of sustain without the distortion. Supposedly this was
accomplished by adding a fifth preamp tube. The power section is a quartet
of 6L6 tubes. I know my local store has one on order and the head is supposed
to list for around $1100. Pretty big $ for Peavey, huh?
If I get a chance to test drive one, I'll write up on it.

Eddie lost it tone-wise when he switched to that Bradshaw rack system.
The compressor into exciter into stereo chorus into delay did nothing
for the "Brown" sound! His tone is much better with the new Peavey's,
but I still like his older "Marshall's are melting" tone.

A couple GFTPM issues back, Eddie described the 3 amps used on the F***
album. The 5150 and Bradshaw were 2 of them, but I forget the third.
He said the used the 3rd one on most of the album. If I recall
correctly, the 5150 is used on "Poundcake" only.

Gee Buck - Aren't you gonna buy one? It would be *REAL* interesting
doing a A/B comparison with a JCM900 DR stack and the store that
ordered the 5150 happens to have both.
Is there a trend here? First Ampeg launches its first serious guitar
stack since the venerable V4. Then Peavey goes for the big-bucks AND
famous endorser approach. PRS and Jackson tried to bump into the big
stack market (as well as some other company that starts with a K), but
only time will tell as to who the survivors will be. Maybe we'll
see a big LPMG type of deal down the road a ways.

his old Marshall (the original one he used on almost all the old

That's right! I don't think they make ANYTHING! Their Latin
Percussion line probably comes from Latin America! The Kitty Hawks
were imported from (West) Germany, and the Soho pre-amps were a
Quattro clone from Taiwan. They used to market effects units from
Germany under the brand name Nobels Sound Studio.

Sticking with this topic - Peavey makes the EVH 5150 in beautiful
Mississippi. I give them more credit everytime I see them going for
something new. For the price of the 5150, it should blow away the
    Triumph and VTM series!

A half-stack sounds like the cheapest trial size, unless they come out
with a combo version. It seems the brown sound has got to have a big
cab. Are the heads large ala Marshall so that you need a large cab to
sit it on? If they're not, you could go with a 2x12 cab.

Well kids, I just finished my first gig with the 5150 amp.

    Wot? Yes, I did it, I bought a 5150 half-stack this afternoon.
$1150. for the two units...not bad. I had to do it...I need
killer tone, and this baby has it!!

If Kevin McDonough and others thought the JCM 900 MK III had high gain,
then you won't believe the response from *5* 12ax7's in series!! FAR
too much gain to max out the controls...I ran the controls like this:
    * = engaged

       6 * Bright 5 5 10 8 2 2 1/2 7 6
Crunch * Crunch Lead bass mid treb crunch lead res. presence
    Volume gain master master

...and had all the gain I could ever want and/or use.

It had the liquid tone!! Another thing, soloing on the neck and/or
middle humbucker sounds REALLY nice...like the woman tone personified!
This amp bruns when you get the masters up on it, but it's LOUD!!!
The singer was bitching when the solos came in, and that was only on
    2 and a half!

I really like the footswitch...channel and effects loop. Now I can
leave my Delay/Harmonizer back at the amp, and run shorter cords, and
switch it all from out front and from one unit. With the JCM 900, I
had the delay and the channel switch out front, was sort of a hassle.
    This is really conventient!

Also, since it has so much headroom, I only need to cart around a half
stack now. I cannot imagine this head running two cabs (that would be
insane...probably where the name 5150 came from!).

Buck, who won't say how much it "roolz", just that I really like it,
    and so does the band.

PS - I'm keeping the JCM 900 head. It has it's own sound, for sure,
and does a sound that this amp WON'T do, but that is a vice verse
    scenario.

I KNEW he'd do it. Not a bad price, cab and all. It does look a lot
better as a unit with matching head/cab. I'm gonna plug into the one at
the local store and re-test it.
I've still got my two M1 heads, so I doubt anything I do will be
in the stack/half-stack area. Probably more like 19" something 2U.

and channel A also has the crunch switch, which puts another 12ax7 in

I got to play a 5150 Saturday... Although I only got about 10 minutes on it,
I'll add what I can.

Configuration:

- Full stack - (2)4x12's, one head (120wts)

jc's initial thoughts:

- Damn is this thing LOUD !! (I hate the store where I tried it - I was
as obnoxious as possible :). Twas way-loud compared to my Marshall
(which is pretty damn loud). You wouldn't survive if you used Bucks
Lead From Hell settings. You'd be dead - body would probably be
  found in next county.

- Pretty crunchy. Sounded a LOT like the plexi-patch I have in my Mp1.

- I had the mids cranked very high (especially for me!). Seems like that
  amp had metal in mind.

- Lots of sustain (a Marshall its not).

- Plenty of squeelies.

- Clean left me a little cold, I was trying to emulate my 2550 with strat
combo. It was pretty brittle. (A Marshall its not).

- I thought it sounded a lot like a Kitty M3 I used to own, but different
  (better?) EQ voicing. Kinda grainy.

- Not enough LEDS.

My Marshall sustains the s**t out of the 5150!! The 5150 has more
grunge and crunch...my MK III sings forever.

- Plenty of squeelies.

I like my Marshall for squeeling harmonics MUCH better!!

I like the clean sound. You have to use the low imp input though.

Key word here - initial. I only played the thing for a few moments.
I was there for something else.

>- Pretty crunchy. Sounded a LOT like the plexi-patch I have in my Mp1.
>
> EVERYTHING sounds like your plexi patch?!

Well, I'd qualify that with a "EVERY AMP (head, combo etc) sounds like your
plexi patch?!" Basically because not many heads can emulate an Mp1 with
Distorted Tube selected... Heads tend to come closer to the "Clean Tube"
voice than... My plexi patch is "clean tube".

>- I had the mids cranked very high (especially for me!). Seems like that

I like this EQ section. I tend to drop the mids out anyway, and this one
is "voiced" low in the MID department.

I've never played a MKIII. I know that most marshalls I've play didn't have
much sustain.

>- Plenty of squeelies.
>

This one was comparable to Gregs JCM800 for squeelies, I thought the was a
little tighter sounding though.

Its the grain that made me say dat. The EQ voicing is totally different.

Man, I'm really getting into the amp the more I play it!! Boy, am I
happy I dished out the cash for this pup!!

Unfortunately, I played my M-word amp the other night, and it PALED in
comparison. The 5150 has a monster tone and attack that the M-word
just shivers in it's shadow at.

Joe Minville heard this amp in action last night, and db_II is going to
test drive this pup this evening. This thing is loud n proud. Sustain
from hell, killer harmonics, but CLEAN (you can hear all the notes,
even in full chords!). Must be something in the output stage...this
amp doesn'ty compress on output like my M-word amp does.

A happy but somewhat louder Buck

I tried it, it's a nice amp. The "clean" channel can be cranked to have almost
as much gain as a kitty kawk in heet! The dirty channel is indeed very dirty,
but it has a crispness that keeps the notes very distinct, even when chording.

and it's VERY LOUD....whew!

I left Buck in a state of possible GTS (usually I leave with GTS) I dunno if
it was the Steinberger or the Zoom that got him...possibly both!

Wrong topic, but the Zoom is "cute", but not for me. The Steinberger
    was a different story tho.

So Dave, was it the endless sustain on the verge of blistering
feedback that turned your 'sort of off' to this amp??

Actually I liked it fine, it is on the border of being out of control, but
I'm used to that what with the kitties and all...This is the first Peavy
amp I ever played through that I thought even began to sound like a serious
amp, and it sounded very very serious! I did have some trouble with feedback
but it was those hot pickups in the berger as much as the amp...

This is a nice amp, if I was in the market for something like a half-stack,
I'd have to try one out...since I'm a SMRP (Stereo midi rack puke), it's
not the type of thing I'd buy...maybe in another life....

2377.63Harry K. Cody and the 5150 headCAVLRY::BUCKdistant memoriesFri Jul 17 1992 09:4851
I went and saw my current FAV guitarist play last night -- Harry K.
Cody. In the liner notes of his current album ("Second Coming" by his
band, Shotgun Messiah), he lists the 'Tommy Folkelsson hot-wired
Marshall head' as his main source of amplification.

Hmmm, when I nabbed my Peavey 5150, I originally bought it cuz it could
get a VH/Vito Bratta tone (one of a OLD Marshall which had been modded
in the preamp stage), but soon realized that it also sounded very much
like Cody's tone on SM's new album, Second Coming. Well, I guess I
should not have been surprised to see Harry on-stage last night with a
    5150 stack!!

Sorry to see that his wah-wah pedal (which is an intrical part of his
lead sound, ala Michael Schenker) was missing. Harry played a
flame-top and a gold-top Les Paul plugged straight into the 5150 head,
which was powering two (older model) Mesa-Boogie 4x12 cabs. For those
who are curious, Harry was using primarily the bridge pickup on the
Les Paul's, and the "LEAD" channel on the 5150. The tone controls were
    set as such:

Rhythm Lead Bass Mid Treb Rhythm Lead Resonance Presence
    Gain Gain MV MV

    N/A 5 8 8 7 N/A 3 8 7

    ***********

As far as playing goes, Harry K. Cody is all taste!! He was a little
sloppy last night, blew some tapping licks and some harmonics, but
overall he sounded great. He has a very melodic, fluid style, and his
solos are definitely noteworthy. Def. recommended!

    ***********

One thing that struck me as funny was on the cabs, the MESA/BOOGIE
logos were gone, as well as *both* the "Peavey" and the "5150" plates
on the amp head front. Also, the "EVH" on the amps faceplate was
covered with black tape. I figured at first he didn't want anyone to
know he was using a "P-word" amp, but when he came out on stage, I
noticed that there was duck-tape on the headstocks of both his Les Paul
guitars, which covered the "GIBSON" logo?!? (he left Les Paul, fwiw)
Also, the bassist was had the brand names on all his equipment covered
as well (the "AMPEG" logo on his SVT cabs, whatever was in his rack,
and he also covered the "GIBSON" logo on his custom Les Paul bass).

    Hmmmm, I can't imagine they're that up-tight about endorsements...wonder
if the tour promoter made them do it??

Same thing on Vinnie Moore's Laney cabs/heads. I talked with his

I really enjoyed playing Buck's 5150 and it wasn't even let loose
(like master on 1 or something like that). I found a 5150 head in a
consignment shop I deal with. They've got a sticker on it for $549.
Everytime I've sold something there I've had to lower my "first asking"
price. I told the shop owner, a long-term friend, that I would take it
    off his hands for $450.
It's not like I need it myself. It will be for the other guitar
player in my band. For that price he'll buy it. If the offer flies
I'll have it this weekend. If the other guitar player doesn't buy it
maybe I'll keep it and sell my 60 watt M1 head (I'll still have the
    100 watter).
Oh Yeah - I test drove this particular amp. It is LOUD! I turned the

I don't see how he can't buy it. The other guitar player is using a

through more amps since I've been in the band with him (Marshall 5100
Valvestate, Fender M-80, and now the Crap, ooops I meant Crate).
Actually the Crate isn't a bad starter or practice amp, but we're a

Then you know what hits the fan. We did the gig Saturday night
but the other guitar player was sick with a viral ear infection
and was taking anti-vertigo medicine. No way he was going to gig.
On top of that it is one of our better paying gigs and a booking agent
was coming out to check us out.
So do we cancel? No way! I go over the set lists and determine
what solos that I didn't currently play in the band. There were only
a few songs that really require two guitars. I made up a tape of
just the solos I had to learn and went to work with the multitrack
and headphones. It went over quite well. When the band asked the
soundman how it was, they got the reply about hos much better my
    guitar sounded anyway.
I'll wait and see on the 5150 amp. A lot depends on what happens
with the other guitar player. I mentioned on the phone to him that
I was trying to get a deal on a 5150 for him. Ya know what's scary?
I asked him how much he paid for the Crate 1600 XL head. $400!!!
OUCH!! I don't think the resale on those suckers is too high. That's

On the 5150 cabs, they load a custom-made "Sheffield" speaker,

I'm not really involved directly with MasPar, but I am one of the
few qualified CS engineers on the whole planet to work on the MPP
    products. I'm upgrading a Thunderball (MP-1) to a Cyclone (MP-2) in a
few months. The people I'm involved with at Syracuse University are
parallel processing "heavies". I'm glad I got the training for this
very different type of system and the support I get from MPSG has been
    great so far!

5150? I used it at practice last night. The other guitar player has
been out of commission for the last few gigs and practices, so I've
had to pick up any slack. I talked to him on the phone. He's
interesting in trying the 5150. I told him it would help his guitar
sound immensely, but if he didn't want it I'll gladly keep it for
myself and sell off some other goodies. I really do like a few of the
things the 5150 does. And the Korg A4 will switch channels through
its external control outs without much trouble.

After I get a better feel for the controls on the 5150 I'm gonna post
a 5150 vs. M1 comparison, since they are both "hot rodded out of the
    box" all-tube amps.

I re-read the early replies in this topic. Pretty interesting now
that I own one. And I said I doubted I'd buy another amp head.
    What do I know?

For $450 I don't think I could loose much on this. As a matter of
fact I'm hoping the other guitar player in my band either isn't
interested or doesn't have the money. He might be leaving the band
anyway due to medical problems and his work schedule. And we just got
a whole bunch of new clubs and bookings. March is looking good!
    I'm seriously gonna consider using the 5150/KH 4X12/Korg A-4 on a

Has anyone compared the 5150 speaker cab to the standard Peavey
4x12? I'm considering the purchase as well, but the local Daddy's here
in Connecticut only stocks the standard cab instead of the premium
unit. As far as price goes, the head and standard cab will go out the
door, including tax for $1k even. But they want $1150, using the 5150
cab instead. The peavey monitor magazine they had there listed both
cabs as using Celestion speakers, but didn't get into any details. The
guy told me that there was an issue back about a year ago that may have
gone into more detail about the cab, but he wasn't that sure. The one
thing that he was sure about was that these amp's are already spoken
for before they even make it in the door, and most of them go with the
    scaled down cab.

    >John

    John,

When I was interested in the 5150 amp, I tried it with both the 5150
cab, the std Peavey "Marshall Clone" 4x12 celestion-loaded cab, and
with a Marshall cab. Oddly enough, I *really* didn't like the sound
with the REAL Marshall cab!! Hard to explain, but it just didn't seem
to "fit". I then tried the 5150 through the two Peavey offerings, and
it DEFINITELY sounds better through the matching 5150 cab.

You can try it yourself, but know when the P-word engineers and eddie
sat down to brainstorm on this amp, they designed it AMP + SPEAKER CAB!
The design of the cab is a bit different, and it doesn't use Celestion
spks, it uses a high wattage "Sheffield" speaker custom made for
Peavey, which is like 100wts/spkr, but are voiced to sound like vintage
celestions. Peavey actually noted that the hard part to designing the
5150 was "getting the cab right". The cab is designed to work in
conjuction with the amps output section (eg, able to handle the power
for output clipping, and the resonance and presence controls are voiced
    to the cab specifically).

Again, try it for yourself -- to me, the choice is clear. And fwiw,
the $1150 is not a bad price for the 5150 half-stack. If you have some
extra $$$, Acton Music Center is selling the 5150 FULL stack (2 cabs)
for $1500 flat. That is a steal no matter how you slice it (although
this amp is so loud, I can't imagine it running two cabs!!)

Thanks for the info... The biggest problem around here in Conn is
being able to actually test one out. The problem is also two fold,
where the folks in the music stores are in the same predicament, with
the amp's being 'sold' before they make it into the store. In Conn. we
also have the problem with there is just not enough music stores that
deal in the higher end stuff like this. Maybe it's time to take my
stealth up to Acton and play for awhile. Is there 5150 a floor model
that will be there for awhile?

Yeah, it's basically a floor model, I mean, it's the only one they
have, but it isn't going anywhere fast! (read: noone has the bucks
to buy it, although many agree it wails)

    >	Also, on a lighter side... Has anyone played an acoustic through

Nope, but the "rhythm" channel can go from VERY clean to VERY dirty.
You can even play lead on this channel!! With the low gain input
and no buttons pushed in, I can't see why an acoustic wouldn't sound
    great through this amp.

I haven't heard poundcake or anything else by EVH for years so I can't say. I
do know that according to my friend the 5150's were marshalls reverse mounted
in the shells. According to my friend who has toured with a bunch of acts,
this is very typical. example: Billy Sheehan endorses Rotosounds, but uses
DR's, Little feat endorses fender amps and guitars, but use markley amps
hidden in rack mounts while the fenders sit in standby on stage in full view,
I saw that one myself at Bowdin College a year or so ago as I was right up

COOL!!! One is mine as soon as they hit the market!

Funny -- I had a lengthy discussion with several Peavey amp reps at a
show shortly after the amp debuted on the market. I already owned
mine, and was discussing the pros and cons (imho) of the amp. I did
ask if they ever planned to issue a combo version of the amp, and the
answer was a jubillant "NO" -- in fact, it was the same answer to my
"do you ever plan to ECO this sucker to fix x y and z problems?" ...
apparently, they (the amp reps) tout the contract between Peavey and
EVH is very strict and binding, and that no changes would be made to
the amp, or to the line ... specifically stating that a combo version
    would never be produced.

    Never say never I guess?!

At the time, I wondered how much of the "no" response was simply
'damage' control on behalf on the Peavey reps .. you know, 'have a
difficult answer...take a hard line and say no' type approach?!

Yep, channel switching, efx loop, resonance/presence controls, REVERB,
twin 12" Sheffield drivers, crunch select switch, bright switch,
standard 3-band EQ. It sounds like a nice package actually. We'll
see though, since some amps are better suited as 100 watters than
    their lower wattage cousins.

The Peavey Duel 212 is a nice amp too and has the 5150 resonance and
presence control ckt on it, plus the ValVerb tremolo and reverb ckts
too. It has that clean/low end kick in the gut power that gets looked
over by alot of other amp manufacturers. I played two different Duel

Geez, what IS this world coming to?

First Fred "don't need no stinkin boogie" buys a boogie. Then Buck
"Peavey sucks" Buckley buys a Peavey.

Now the two guitarists I've spent most of the last 5 years playing
with who used to write little "spiked messages" to each other on
the band-room whiteboard may end up playing thru "essentially" the
    same amp!

Next thing you know, Fred will join a prog-rock band, Buck will join
an R&B band, and db will quit DEC, move down to the delta and spend
the rest of his life at the crossroads playing the blues with Edd
Cote and seeing only woman who "don't treat me right".

This really is a small world.

I'm not reading many notes these days (who has freaking time? I have
assumed the jobs of 4 transitioned people since June!).

Man, I am DROOLING over the sounds of that combo!! The 5150, to me,
can be tweeked to be the most ROOLIN amp. No, I don't think it's
great cuz I own one, cuz if you know ME, if I didn't think it was
the best sound for me, it would be sold and replaced!

The 5150 has a great, tube sound -- very beefy -- but allows for
sustain and warmth WITHOUT distortion and the "buzz" associated with
Marshall-type amps. I like how this amp can sing, and even with the
gains turned way up, you can voice a Maj7/9 chord and still distinguish
EVERY note in the damn chord -- try THAT on a marshall! I like the
headroom and lack of compression on this beast.

about the only drawback is that the amp has way too much headroom for
anyone's good -- who needs the 120 watts? I've never played this amp
over 3, and even then it was screaming loud. This 60 wt amp with
REVERB sound like the dream amp -- all the tone (and those killer
Sheffield speakers!!!) with REVERB ... the only thing missing from the
5150 ... what else could one ask for?

I'll be rolling pennies, thank you

    --
    Buck

PS -- i agree with fred -- while we have played through the same amp a
time or two (Rik Sawyer's volume jams come to mind), our styles are
vastly different. neither of which makes any one 'better', imvho,
    just different.
2377.139MPGS::MARKEYSend John Thomas some doughnutsWed Mar 08 1995 10:4330
My first encounter with the 5150 was hearing Buck's at db's
house. When Buck wheeled it in, I have to admit, my expectations
were not very high. I remember thinking to myself, "Whatzat?
Has Buck gone mad? I thought he was into only the best in
gear?" Well, that all ended mighty quick when he powered up
and started to play. I was shocked. The damn thing sounded
great. Now part of it, I'm still convinced, is that really
good guitarists have some element of tone which will always
shine through on even the lowliest gear, and Buck is what
I would consider a really good guitarist. On the other hand,
there's no denying that the 5150 is a cut above anything else
that Peavey was offering in the way of amplification.

[Don't take me wrong... I own a Peavey MIDI bass and the
console in my recording studio is a 36 input Peavey AMS,
which I chose after a long search of consoles in its
price range; both pieces of equipment are excellent...
my dislike of their stuff is limited to their amplifier
    and speaker products.]

As a bass player, I've been through a lot of Peavey gear and
I cannot think of one bass amplifier or speaker cabinet
that I like, even a little. So, I didn't expect much from
the 5150. If they can "downsize" the 5150 to a combo, I'll
probably buy one for use at the studio. And if they ever
apply the same ideas to a bass head and speaker system,
I might even have to reconsider this Trace Elliot snobbishness
    that's overcome me lately... :-)

I will try and explain the sound of the 5150 as best I can.

    First off, the layout

It is a dual channel amp ... both have a gain and a master volume
associated with it. The channels are voiced differntly as well.
The rhythm channel has two buttons for a 6bd boost at 2k and a
6db boost in gain. the lead channel is sans that, but adds in a
5th preamp tube into the circuit. Even with the bright button in
on the rhythm channel, I would say the rhythm channel sounds more
'bassy' or fuller sounding, and the lead channel is very sharp and
    cuts through very well.

both channels feed into a std 3-band eq -- bass, mid, treb -- and then
onto an active stage featuring presence and resonance (very deep bass)
    controls.

As far as layout -- the thing looks more like an old Hiwatt or Ampeg
amp. As far as sound goes, I would have to say it sound more like an
old Ampeg. If you had to choose between a marshall and a fender -- I'd
say Fender -- the amp is more voiced into the midrange, rather than the
super bright highs associated with the Marshall voicing. This is a
good thing imho -- makes for a better overall tone, and never gets
buzzy or mosquito-sounding like some marshall amps can.

My biggest like on the 5150 -- the footswitchable FX loop. My setup
is simple -- I have the one peavey footswitch with two buttons:

    1) Channel switch (loud to louder)
    2) FX in/out

I just set up my delay/chorus unit on top and have it on all the time,
then I just pop it in/out of the circuit as needed (I usually use it
on solos and single note lines).

Actually, via UPS the price would be pretty affordable. I recently
shipped ~100lbs to Colorado, and with insurance I believe the price
came to less than $80. I forget the exact figure. UPS was the only

Actually, the maximum single package weight is 150lbs. The maximum
size is 130" in length and girth combined. Maximum length is 108".

Any packages over 70lbs must have a UPS "Heavy Package" sticker
attached. 70lbs is the maximum weight for hazardous materials
packages. Perhaps a 5150 would qualify as a hazardous materials
package; hazardous to your ears that is :)

To ship 100lbs via ground residential from my house in Sutton Ma.
to Huntington Beach Calif for example, would cost 42.44 as the
basic rate excluding insurance. Insurance is relatively cheap, adding
on $3000 insurance raises the rate to $52.59.

I have a new amp set-up I thought I'd share with you all.

Previously, I had either the 5150 1/2 stack for that killer singing
fusion tone, or the Classic 4/10 50wt for that blues/retro tone.

Recently, while toying around, I came up with the following config
    which is pretty cool:

I plug my guitar straight into one of my (two) Boss RDD-10 digital
delays. I split the signal -- the dry side going into the Classic
50, and the delayed side into the 5150. I set up a delay time of
around 60ms. The tone I set on the Classic 50 is a straight ahead,
not too distroted sound, very evenly EQed, more of an "in your face"
brown Fender sound. This provides the tone for the initial transient.
I then set up the 5150 into "scream" mode -- i.e., and note played on
it immediately goes into feedback/endless sustain.

So, the outcome of the above -- I play a note or a chord, and the
initial sound is a std Fender tone, which normally wouldn't sustain
for doo-doo, which then kicks into a singing sustain! The initial
sound is clean enough to provide the distinction, and then the "after"
sound provides the sustain I want.

I use the Boss DDL #2 for other time delay fx looped into the 5150.

    Kewl, huh?
2377.175DABEAN::REAUMEactually working on Win95!Sat Sep 02 1995 09:5811
Sounds Interesting. I probably can't even do that with just my rack, but I
could do a patch thing with the effects unit (probably the REPLIFEX)
and feed the dry signal into the AC30TB and the delayed into the
ACCESS/VELOCITY to approximate what Buck did. Hmmm- nice idea for
recording but I don't know if I'd want to carry it all around for a
    gig.
I'm just finishing up two weeks of vacation which included five band
gigs, 2500 miles of driving to six amusement parks and two different
state fairs. Not a relaxing vaca but fun nonetheless.
