2354.0. "DO MUSIC & NOTHING ELSE" by JENEVR::RUDNICK () Thu Oct 17 1991 14:42

Hey Gang,

I'm looking on opinions or knowledgable information concerning worthiness of
the seminars entitled "DOING MUSIC & NOTHING ELSE". These seminars have been
around for 5 years and according to the brocuhere in front of me are said to be
exclusively sponsered by MUSICIAN Magazine and Music Business Seminars, L.T.D.

The seminar is subtitled: "The Music Business Weekend Seminar" and Peter C.
Knickles is the instructor. The highlights of the seminar include how to:

	* Learn how to attract a record deal!
	* Raise $10,000 or more for your projects!
	* Publish and place your own song catalog
	* Get your share of airplay and publicity!
	* Purchase equipment at wholesale prices!
	* Produce your video for under $200!
	* Stop the "it-costs-us-to-play" syndrome!
	* Get top management to call you!
	* 21 ways to locate professional musicians!
	* FREE A&R and T-100 Directories ($90 value)!
	* FREE PAN Membership ($225 value)!
	* How to release, prompt, distribute and SELL your CD or cassette!

	* And much, much more...

New items for this seminar include exclusive video interviews/comments from:

	Mark Knopfler
	Dread Zepplin
	Jody Watley
	Mick Fleetwood
	Chick Corea
	Phil Collins
	Carla Bonoff
	Michael Bolton

	  etc...

	A&R Reps
        Managers
	Producers
	Booking Agents
	Attorneys..... etc...

Any comments or insights????

2354.3It's a *very* informative course!GIAMEM::DERRICOGoing Thermo-nuclearFri Oct 18 1991 12:4417

   I went to the seminar in the spring and had thought it was worth all
the money that I spent on it. It's rather expensive but the knowledge
that you gain probably pays for itself in the first year, if you decide
to "really" get serious.
   It can also help you if you decide not to get serious. You really get
some insight as to how the buisness works, and what you need to do to
be successful in the trade.
   The course outlines what you need to do, and how to do the things that
most of the public has no idea about. If you can afford it, I highly
recommend it to anyone. Though sometimes you want to keep it a secret!
   One thing though, is that the periferal material (outside the class)
is expensive. The stuff that Peter Knickles(sp?) writes is expensive. The
books are expensive. (This is not the book you get with the class).

    John,

    You say the course is rather expensive, how much does it cost?

    You seem to be saying that there is considerable outside reference
    material which you have to purchase seperately to get the most of it,
    could you give us a list of this?

2354.6Tuition=$195.00JENEVR::RUDNICKFri Oct 18 1991 18:1311
    The seminar's tuition is $195.00. This is advertised as being $100.00
    off the regular price. The seminar folks say they can do this because
    of MUSICIAN Magazine's contribution to the cause. There is a $95.00
    registration deposit and the brochure mentions that 20% of the seats
    are being saved for walkups. If anyone wants it, I have all of this
    kind of information from the brochure.

    The New England sessions include Boston on Nov 2/3 and Hartford on Nov
    9/10.

2354.7hmmmmm... I'd question what *you'll* get out of itWEDOIT::ABATELLIMESA BOOGIE modified by PEAVEY!Tue Oct 22 1991 08:566
    It sounds like all those "trade schools" that don't offer you anything
    "after" you graduate. Kinda like the Columbia School of Broadcasting...
    although if you go for "informational purposes" only, I'm sure it'll
    help you understand a part of the business.
