2347.0. "Guitar samplers" by COPCLU::SANDGREN (Lhep! I'm trpdd ina P11D*P) Tue Oct 15 1991 12:07

Totally amazed as I was with the Eric Johnson concert last sun-
day, I enjoyed his use of a repeating sampler.

I GOTTA HAVE ONE OF THESE!!!

What is the cost of a unit like this? How many seconds does it
keep your incredible licks? It's a jungle out there, I wanna
hear your opinions before I rush out and buy something wild...

EJ also uses it on his instructional video - I think this box
	could inspire me...

i thought he used a trusty Echplex for his "sample" stuff?!?

Well was he really sampling or using a delay in an infinite loop? I
saw him in April, have his video, and also his Austin City Limits
appearances on video too. For an example, when doing the live intro to
"Cliffs of Dover", it sounds to me like he's using a 2 second delay
with an infinite loop and just plays over it.

In the "Eric Johnson" topic, I posted his rig as published in "Guitar
Player". You might want to look there to see what he's using for
    sampling, if anything.

There's also a note on "8 second samplers" in here. Some units that do
    this are:

    Roland SDE-3000 (rack unit)
    Digitech PDS-8000 (stomp box)
    Digitech RDS-8000 (rack)

Roland also makes a S-770 that does 96 seconds of sampling. I'm not
sure, but I think the Eventide H3000 does 32 seconds. The TC
Electronics 2290 may also have some sampling capabilities.

If you're looking for a 2 second digital delay, I strongly recommend
the PDS2020 by Digitech (paid $150 for it, new, in NYC in 1987). It
has 3 switch selectable delay ranges for chorus, flanging and echo
and has an infinite repeat mode.

It's one of the *quietest* and cleanest digital delay units I've
seen (even compared to rack mount jobbies).

2347.4I could use a delaylaylayCOPCLU::SANDGRENLhep! I'm trpdd ina P11D*PWed Oct 16 1991 07:0310

    A delay or a sampler - I can't tell the difference. All I want is a
repeatable delay/sample - what I cannot do with the delay I have now
    - a Yamaha FX500 with I think a max. of 0.8 sec. delay. The units
with 8 sec. delay seem like something I could use - I imagine they
also have a footswitch for limiting the sample? (excuse my lack of
knowledge here)...I'll have a closer look at the Digitech units...

What EJ is using is a digital delay unit with an infinite repeat,
specifically EJ uses an old MXR(blue)rackmount delay. You will find
that most of the Multi effect DSP's (DSP128,Quadraverb etc) will not
do this same effect. He also uses this effect(the repeat) on his first
    release("Tones"). I'd recommend at least a 2 second delay such as a
    Digitech 1900......
