I've dreamt music before, but could never remember it the next
day - if it was original.
Other than that I've had several dreams about Rush. Like jamming
with Rush (filling in on drums during a concert - ha! ;-), or
just hearing new Rush tunes that don't really exist.
It's rather annoying really. Except for the time I filled in for
Peart - that was kinda cool...;-)

| When I was in college, one night I dreamed I was playing Al Stewart's
"Year of the Cat" on piano, (I'd never played it before), and when I
woke up, I found a piano and played it. Wasn't an original, but it was
still interesting to me.
Another night I dreamed I walked in to my manager's office at Dec and
told him I was quitting because I was going on tour with Heart. That
one, alas, didn't play out in the daytime! ;^>

2322.5 | It happens to me quite a bit lately | JENEVR::SAKELARIS | | Tue Sep 10 1991 15:36 | 22 |
| Yeah, this kind of stuff has happened to me. I've dreamt up some
really wonderful music. But when I wake up, its time to shower and get
ready for work or some other mundane activity. I can't recall exactly
what it was, but I sorta know what it was like, that is it's texture
(usually silky) time, and type (Rock, blues, jazz). Usually by the time
I'm outta the shower, its lost into oblivion. Sometimes the same thing
happens to me with some comedic routine or story that seems hilarious
in my dream. But again, by the time I'm outta the shower, its gone.
I seem to remember Paul saying "Yesterday" came into his mind while
asleep. When he awoke, he went right to the guitar and worked it out.
I think what happens is that during sleep, the creative side of the
mind is the most active and that what you hear is your imagination as
it becomes vivid, while the logical side of the mind goes into a pause
mode. I don't think it has anything to do with communication from
those in the next dimension or any of that kind of crap.

I've dreamt music and although I couldn't quite make it out when I woke
up, I had a strong feeling that I had just heard something great. Very
frustrating feeling.
a side note about dreaming up material:
Last season there was a Seinfeld (sp?) episode on tv that started out
with him nodded out in front of the tv with an old sci-fi movie on. He
groggily lifts up his head and squints at the tv for a moment then falls
back off to sleep. Later that night he wakes up laughing and, on a pad
next to his bed, writes down a phrase that he's dreamt. Next morning he
looks at it and can't make any sense out of it, so as a running gag
throughout the show, he goes crazy over trying to figure out what it
that was he was dreaming that was so funny. Pretty funny, huh?

Yeah, but that was just the "placeholder" lyrics he used to show his
melody. It was probably the melody he dreamed...

"...if you can dream it, you have the ability to create it", ok, but
how? I can't think of many things that would be more fulfilling to me
than to be able to re-create music I hear in dreams. Surely technical
ability alone won't cut it (of which I have very little at this
point).

I remember reading somewhere that John learned to play banjo before
taking up guitar. I don't think he ever recorded with one, however.
Then again, maybe I dreamed that too...

If you dreamed it up, you created it. Getting your fingers to move the
strings is the mechanical part. Lock in your memory using whatever
tools you have available: pencil/paper, microcassette recorder - then
sit down with your guitar (or whatever) and work it out, note by note.
You'll teach yourself technique if you pursue this course, but it won't
be nearly as fast as signing up with a good instructor.

Then there's another one where my band gets signed, our album is

Yes, I often come up with musical and lyrical ideas when I'm not thinking
about it - when I'm dreaming, or daydreaming, or even just thinking about
something else, and an idea will just pop into my head!
I keep one of those little micro-cassette recorders in my car, and another
one beside my bed, just for those occassions, and I use them all the time.
