2320.0. "Gigs - anyone show up?" by USPMLO::DESROCHERS () Mon Sep 09 1991 11:28

<this was written for the MUSIC notesfile - but we also have a
    	"gigging where" note>

Just wondering... what kind of response do you gigging bands
get thru the "Who's gigging where?" note - 5.*.

How about the inside-DEC distribution lists?

Now, I'll admit that alot of folks in here aren't too psyched
to come out and see me with tapes and I understand that. But
even when I was with a band I noticed the same thing. We'd
always post where we were playing and the DEC turnout was
	virtually nonexistant.

Without going into musical styles and tastes (since there are
certainly folks in here who'd like a bunch of DEC bands), what
kind of turnout do the gigging bands get from note 5.* and
	inside distribution lists?

Have some bands already given up on that note?

	Thanks,
	Tom

I've been out to a few gigs that were posted, and on some rare
occasions, folks have been out to one of mine. It's not the best
advertising in the world, I guess 8^) 8^) I look at it as an
invitation for people to come down and laugh at me 8^) 8^) 8^)

Tom, I'll be out to see you once you come see me, OK??? 8^) 8^) 8^)

P.S. Howzabout a chance to hear the tapes without you playing? 8^)

The best turnout I've seen for my past (and present) bands was in
South Carolina ... Unreal crowds in Greenville - and only one plant in the
area.

Now I'm playing in a metal band (GSO was Classic RnR), and the turnout is
good from The Springs, but not up to snuff per-capata etc..etc..
We still love it though - just bring ear plugs and sun glasses... :)

Agreed - GSO (Greenville) was always supportive of my bands (Metal,
    Classic RnR, Country).

A few years ago, when I used to play in the original club circuit in
Boston, I used to get pretty large crowds from Digital using the
notes file/distribution list route.

For the last 2 1/2 years, I've been playing in a cover band. I don't
advertise as much, but on those occasions when I do, the Digital
turnout has been pretty low.

What's the difference?

1 - type of music (maybe Digital people prefer originals - I know I do!)

2 - location of clubs (I no longer play in Boston area)

3 - we used to send tickets out for the original gigs (maybe this is a
good reminder)

Advertising is what it is. There's no guarantee that anyone will
show up regardless of the advertising - that's why some large scale
productions go broke or in the hole. I just try to utilize ALL
the available avenues for getting the word out about the act - which
means posters on the wall, notes conferences, newspaper, magazines,
and word of mouth - including radio. We also make announcements
about upcoming appearances during shows - if anyone is there.
Personally I think it's great if any DEC folks show up, but we
don't feel bad if no one is there (long as we get paid - hah!).
Jethro Burns told a story about this one time:

"we were playing two shows a night at a large club that
seated about 500 - and one night for the second show there was
NO ONE there. We went to the manager and asked if we had to
play it - and he said "HELL YES, if you want to get paid". So
we went on and did the whole bit, didn't leave out a gag. At the
end we bowed, walked off stage, and then came back and did an
    encore."

Gee Brian, we live minutes away from each other and you're
always playing in Cambridge or whatever. But it's a good
point - gigging in the Greater Maynard area has the most
    	potential for Deccie's.

To you Free Raven's, must be good ol' Southern hospitality
    	again, eh?
