I put an EV12-L in my Fender Deluxe and the difference was like
night and day.. heh, I play bass through it now, though and it's
sounding kinda muddy, wonder what's wrong?? [;^)

2284.2 | Depends | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Green tinted 60s mind | Wed Aug 07 1991 18:04 | 15 |
| I suppose that depends on what you mean by "balls". If it's just not
pushing enough air, then it sounds like another cabinet is in order.
If you don't like the tone, then changing the speaker might help.
I wouldn't personally recommend a JBL speaker for a Boogie amp, because
the JBLs are ultra clean and I think it would make it sound really
harsh. The EV would probably be nice, but it was my understanding that
the Mesa Black Shadow speakers were supposed to sound like EVs (or were
made for them by EV or something like that).
I've always liked the sound of Celestions myself, at least two at a
time. Seems like 1x12 combo amps always sound kind of wimpy in
comparison to running the same amp with more speakers.

| I think it would probably sound great! Or try one of the Boogie 4x12s
with 2 Celestions and 2 EVs (but they're kind of pricy).

I think it would depend on the speakers' wattage ratings. The
.50 cal would probably sound better pushing 4 25 watters than 4 70
watters.

| I made a 4x12 with Celestion Vintage 30's,
and a 2x12 with Electro SRO-12's ( old used and huge ).
I'd have to say I like the EV's better, if I could have just 1.

2284.9 | Yea, try a 4x12 (Marshall) | VOLKS::RYEN | Rick Ryen 240-6501 AET1-1/A6 | Fri Aug 09 1991 14:08 | 16 |
| I run my mesa mkiii thru a Marshall 4x12 slant cab, with
original speakers. Although I haven't ab'ed it against
other 4x12 cabs, I think it sounds a whole lot better than just
the single speaker in the boogie box.
I thing that the speakers in my 4x12 are pretty cheap 25 watt
jobs. It's warm in fender mode, but screams when you have the amp
tuned up marshall or boogie style. I rewired the cab to change to be a
better match for the external speaker jack. But, they say in
the boogie manual that an exact impedence match is not crucial.
Test drive one. I think that you will notice an improvement.
You should get both a fuller sound, and more cut.

You will also find out that the Marshall cab is the definition of
directional! That Boogie 1-12 might disperse better!

| Several replys have already suggested it, and I agree.
Give an EVM a try. EVM's have a reputation for being
too clean, but I have been pleasantly surprised by how
good a cranked Fender sounds through one of these. In
a side by side with a 4x10 Marshall with Celestions, I
thought the EV sounded better. Best bet, find someone
(or a store) with an EVM loaded Boogie and ask to run
your amp through it to see how it sounds. My guess is
you'll hear a definite improvement.
Also note, Mesa sells EVMs as an upgrade to their Black
Shadow, so I'd expect there to be a difference.

| FWIW, I never thought EVM's sounded too clean. I used to have a 12L in
my old Hiwatt combo and it sounded excellent when you cranked it.
Handled the abuse well too...

| Whike EVMs are known as clean speakers, when pushed hard, they "bark"
which is why I love them for bass guitar...they add a slight halo of
distortion around louder notes, but with a punch...what did Michael
Anthony call it in those ads? "Like an iron fist in a velvet
glove"...
The other plus is an EVM Seies II handles 200 watts RMS, the EVM
Proline 300, these things are practically blow-out proof...especially
run with a 50 watter.
Brian
P.S. As far as what speakers come in Boogies:
.22 and .50 use a "vintage" Celestion/Black Shadow 12"
The stock Black Shadow used in the 60/100 watt models is of unknown
origin.
As options, there is another Celestion 12", and an EV 12" which are
marked "Celestion/Black Shadow" and "EVM/Black Shadow".
For bass cabs, the 10" and 15" drivers are "EVM/Black Shadows". They use
the EVM-L variant on the 15 rather than the EVM-B.
All of these may be ordered as raw drivers to fill other cabs...their
prices include freight and are *very* competitive with other mail order
sources.

2284.15 | get a real cabinet | STRAT::JENSEN | Tone == JCM 900 | Wed Aug 14 1991 20:23 | 6 |
| I have a boogie .22 and it loves my Marshall 1960 cab (4 70w celesions). I'd
recommend trying a 4x12 you'll see loads of difference. I haven't compared this
with a 4 30w celesions, but I'm sure they'd sound at least as good and maybe
better.

2284.16 | EVM's are great, but JBL's & Altecs are good too! | WEDOIT::ABATELLI | MESA BOOGIE modified by PEAVEY! | Tue Nov 12 1991 15:16 | 24 |
| I'm currently using a Mesa 4x12 cabinet with 2 Celestions and 2 Altecs
and a 100 watt head. I like the sound. Originally there were 2-50 watt
Boogie "Vintage" drivers in the closed section, but installing the Altecs
gave me alittle more bottom end. I like this combination alot, although if
something happened to the Altecs (which I doubt) I'd go for the EVM's in a
flash.
One thing that disappointed me was that Mesa screwed the speakers
down *without* "t-nuts". They just screwed into the plywood! What a rip!
I found two screws stripped and just hanging there (I bought it used).
That next day I went down to the local hardware store and upgraded the
plain screws to 8-32 tee-nuts and hex head screws (screws down tighter
than a normal phillips, or straight slot screw and they won't slip
as easily).
I don't know who makes the Boogie "Vintage" speakers (they're not
Celestions for sure, probably designed after the older Jensens) and while
they have a nice tone, they're not as warm as my Altecs.
Very directional cabinet indeed! You wouldn't think so, but 8 feet to
the left, or right is ALOT different than in front for sure.
Keep in mind that EVM's will add 1000 lbs to your cabinet ;) , but
worth it in my opinion... they're great drivers.
Rock on,
Fred

| Mesa literature says Celestion builds the Vintage speakers, and
patterns them after Jensens ????
Take it with a grain of salt.

P.S. The weight is part of the whole EVM "experience". 8^) 8^)
