Tom, I'm going to "hitch-hike" on your note and ask about my 250
watt, 125 watt per side into 4 ohms power amp.
1. What does "bridge" mean???
2. Can I wire this amp so that it's a 250 watt mono amp??
3. Can I run one side only with the other side turned down and no
load?
4. Can I run both sides into one speaker??
Sorry about the dumb questions... I'm not getting this power amp
stuff!

| > 1. What does "bridge" mean???
Bridging is a mechanism some amps provide to allow either mono or
stereo mode. In the bridged, or mono, mode the amp uses both sides to
make more power. Example: I have a BGW 40wpc power amp which can be
bridged to achieve 80wts mono rather then 40 watts to each channel in
stereo.
> 2. Can I wire this amp so that it's a 250 watt mono amp??
Depends on the amp, many can. Check with the maker if you don't have
an owners manual that'll tell you.
> 3. Can I run one side only with the other side turned down and no
> load?
Yes, with most solid state power amps, this is an acceptable configuration.
> 4. Can I run both sides into one speaker??
No. I can't explain the techie how-to as to exactly why, but I know
that's a good way to blow stuff up.

Tell that to the smoking remains of my ALTEC 15's. On my Phase
Linear 200watt per channel sterio power amp, no load = set fire
to the other channels speakers. At least I was able to get them
re-coned. The amp blew out all 16 output transistors, as well
as damaged the driver stage. It currently resides under my tape
deck desk - I'm looking for a more trustworthy design. The speakers
didn't seem to like 140 dc at 8 amps across an 8 ohm load.
Be careful!!!! If it doesn't say it's ok to leave the output
stage unloaded, don't do it!!!!

All the Peavey, Metaltronix, TubeWorks, BGW, and Biamp models I've seen
have been this way.

| Yo Blues unit - (Wagaga a new one)
If there is a switch that says "Bridge/Stereo" on it, GO FOR IT !
Just watch your load.
jc (Who fried an amp cuz he went bridged and thought he went stereo and
had four 8 ohm speakers plugged into it... Bummin' !)

I recommend the QSC Mx700, a stereo Solid State Power amp that
pushes 150 watts per side into 8 ohms. I've used it as a PA for
my midi system, as well as a stereo guitar rig. I've also run
keyboards in one channel and guitar in the other as well as going
mono and using only one channel (no load on the other and the pot
turned down). Ain't had a hitch yet.
It's pretty lightweight as compared to other brands.
It does mono bridging. I haven't tried it yet, as I like stereo
and have no need to push *that* many watts.
Expect to pay about $425, new.
I love it.

2257.7 | Automatic bridging | GOES11::G_HOUSE | I wanna be sedated! | Thu Jul 18 1991 19:46 | 7 |
| One interesting feature of the MosValve power amps from Tube Works is
that they automatically bridge to mono if you only have one input
hooked up. The lower power on is 80wpc into 8 ohms (and all sources
say that it's an extremely conservative rating) and seem to go for
around $400 new.
