| I have a Laney Bass combo and also have a Fane cabinet. The fane is a
60watt and is heavy duty. The fane is very powerful for a 60watt though
lacks clarity because of this I think. The laney amp has a good overall
sound though lacks power for a 100watt - I have a little trouble
keeping up the bottom end when our drummer lets go.

| Fane is pretty common in UK amps, sort of runs second best to Celestion
over there, I guess. US amps never really got into 'em due to
Celestion mania. Tusc used them but noone liked Tusc amps, anyway
8^). And since we only see the big boys from the UK (Marshall, Hiwatt,
Laney, Trace Elliot) we don't see many Fane drivers over here. Dunno
if they even have US distribution.
I wonder how things might have turned out if Jim Marshall had stuffed
something else into his cabs instead of Celestions.

| When I was in my Hiwatt faze, my cab had Fane's in em. They were *ok*,
but they were no Celestins IMHO. Just didn't have that 3K voicing
thing down.

2233.4 | I like Fanes | MSBCS::KALINOWSKI | | Tue Jun 18 1991 10:16 | 12 |
| Hiwatt cabs use to come loaded with Fanes. I'm not sure if they still
do or not. They're decent speakers.... They distort a little harder
than Celestions (more apt to get the Chainsaw sound with them) but I
think they have a decent sound.
My Friend has a Paul Reviera (sp?) modified Marshall 2x12 combo loaded
with fanes. It sounds fantastic. (By the way... It's a nearly mint
condition JMP 100 watt combo and it only cost 350$ at Daddy's)
Just My 2 cents

| I talked with the salesman about 'em yesterday. He said it was a
situation where Marshall's big on Celestions, and Laney's big on
Fane's. I hooked the Laney up to my Marshall cab (using 2 100W
Celestions) and it sounded great, but I attribute that to the massive
cab and 1 extra speaker.
Thanks for the input ! 8^)

Yeh ! FANES have been around the UK group scene for years.
They started off being a cheap replacement for Goodmans/Celestions. I have
built *many* guitar amps/PA systems using 'em !
In the seventies, they started going up market and produced some really
powerful models (200/300 watts).
They are a good company with a good product, but in the UK don't quite have
the pedigree image that Celestions have.
They are very musical speakers.
I can't prove this, but I have a sneaking suspicion that they are *somehow*
connected with Celestion. Either in the production process or in the design/ex
employees way. Any other UK players have any info?

| The more I play this little Laney combo, the more I agree that the Fane
in there *is* a very musical speaker. As far as warmth and response,
it murders the 50W Celestions I had in my Crate 4x12. But then again,
I think a lot of credit also has to be given to the amp too - The Crate
was taking it up the rack, so to speak ... good sounding rig, but not
very warm. I hooked the Laney up to the Crate cab for a few minutes,
and it sounded worlds better.

| Scary,
Fane Speakers are made here in Leeds, West Yorkshire.
I have acquired some information on them for you.
If you post your Mail stop here (or Vaxmail it to me)
I'll bung the info in the internal mail.

| Scary,
Just to echo a few comments made here - Fane used to get the name tag
of a poor man's Celestion.
Bit of trivia for you - perhaps others have had this too ???
Back in the 70s/early 80s we use have the Fane or H&H syndrome i.e.
Most bands around my neck of the woods would leave their gear over-
night at the gig and pick it up next evening before going to the next
gig - too shattered or too smashed or too lazzzzy to load the van and no
money for roadies ;-)
Sometimes a fairy would visit the gear in the middle of the night and
guess what - swap out the Celestions for a Fane or H&H :-(
How did we know that the Fairy had been ?
Well the common ear often failed to detect this, so we didn't realy
find out till we had to service the cabs. Did we have bad ears ???
Does this tell you anything about Fane speakers (even then) ?
Who came out the best in the adventure - the Fairy or the Group ?
Rgds...Gordon
