Having played the guitar for a number of years I have suffered from never really getting down and putting together a repertoire of music that I really know 100%. 90% no problem, but 100%? So, I have reached a stage now where I can put together enough instrumental stuff such that I can play for 30mins (about 12 assorted pieces) from memory. Trouble is I could go on and on. In people's experience, what number of pieces/playing time is a good figure to aim for bearing in mind that having achieved proficiency in them they will need to be maintained. For instance, in an extreme case you could teach yourself so many that the period between practicing a piece and getting back to it may be so great you have forgotten parts. The reason is purely to be able to feel I have a bag of pieces I could use when the occasion demands. Any thoughts on putting together a repertoire to 'keep under your belt' appreciated. As with anything else, it's not what you learn, it's what you remember aye ? Just a little side thought that's related... the last band I played in lasted about 10 years.. We had around 150/200 songs that we'd usually keep current... now, the hard part in theroy, was staying ontop of all of those songs.. But in reality, there was probably only about 20 or 30 that we simply had to go over with any regularity to stay ontop of. Many of these other songs were basic 1-4-5 tunes, or popluar top 40 songs (like John Cougar stuff..) we'd just brush over them at sound check on the weeks we'd plan to use them, and that would be fine.. So I guess the thoughts to share: In your repetorie, keep a pant load of very basic tunes, popular, heavily played songs, were the frequency of hearing them on the raido from time to time, will keep them fresh in your mind. especially the vocals (if that applies).. Then, the more progressive or complicated songs, would be the ones you'd have to work on regularly to keep in touch with... Fer example.. If I was ever in a band that HAD to practice songs like 'Bring it on Home' or 'Roll Over Bethoven' three times a week, I wouldn't stay in that band too long ;^)

Not that this matters but last year some time Guitar Player did a story on some guy that played guitar (in his own classical accoustic style) and had a repotoir of over 15,000 songs (I think that was the number) that he could recall instantly. Now that's cool. 100 gigabytes of internal memory. I can't remember the names of the songs I know.

> I can't remember the names of the songs I know. I have the same problem. I can never remember the name of the songs we do - the only way I can communicate the song I'm thinking of with the other band members is to actually PLAY a few notes. Funny thing is that Steve Morse's tunes are (with few exceptions) instrumentals and yet I NEVER have problems remembering the names of those tunes. Go figure eh?

The drummer in my band knows ALL the words to ALL of the songs we do, and he is the only one in the band who can make that claim. Without cheat sheets, the rest of us wouldn't stand a chance. Naturally, the drummer is the only one in the band who doesn't sing! Kevin

Almost every band I know has at least 1 banana song. Until it gets to the chorus at least. "oh ya now I remember the name of that song" :^) |
