I was in Milano's music out here in the wild wild west (Mesa) and they had a whole herd of Fender Strats just in from Mexico. These guitars were really nice. The finish and quality seemed quite high. They were selling for ~$350.00, depending on the options. They seemed to be a bit better than the usual Japanese Strats I've test driven lately. I went in with a friend who is just starting out and wanted to look for a guitar. I always liked the American Strats. The Japanese ones I've played were OK, but nothing really special. I guess I figured when I finally broke down and bought a Strat, it would be one of the lower-end USA models, but now I'm not sure I can justify the major price difference between these and the Corona-casters. Has anyone else out there in note-land heard/seen/driven one of these beasties yet? I'd be in'erested in your unbiased/slightly biased/ heavily weighted opinions 8^). Thanks mucho. mIkEy Z.

Well, actually, the Mexican strats are almost as highly regarded among connoisseurs of the offshore clones as the Czechoslovakian models produced in the early 80's. Fit and finish far surpasses the Chinese models produced from the Russian plans, due to the long tradition of guitar and harp building within the culture. The Mexican models exhibit superior intonation when compared to the Samoan strats, possibly due to the greater familiarity with the 12 tone western scale. It is expected that the new Mexican production line will soon ramp up to the same levels of output as the Korean, Japanese, and Northern Ireland production lines... | |||||

I saw a few last weekend. Those are Fender Standard Strats. Hecho En Mexico. I suspect that the drive is on to consolidate and get rid of all that Squire garbage. ccb |
