A buddy of mine does excellent airbrush/paint work. He's done major automotive projects and has a pretty good portfolio of stuff to show. Amazingly enough, he's also a guitar player. So the natural extension to this combination is: custom paint for guitars & basses. The questions are: (1) is anyone in your neighborhood offering this kind of service? if so, (a) how much are they asking, and (b) how are they marketing their service? (2) how much would you pay for top-quality art on your axe? (I'm not soliciting business for him, just trying to see if he can make better than minimum wage for his time.)

Back when Carvel had its own custom paint shop, they charged by the hour. It was about half of what auto mech's charged. | |||||

re: .1 He's out in the boonies around San Diego. I met him on a residency... We were jamming over at his house when he pulled out his scrapbook. Some of his automotive work has been pictured in the hot rod magazines. Really amazing detail, even on van murals. By day he works as a packaging designer. re: .2 - by the hour? Any vague idea how many hours they usually take? |
