When finnishing an accoustic guitar, one has to decide what comes first. In this case: Do I apply the entire finnish, then mark the bridge's location, remove the finnish underneath the bridge again and glue the bridge to the soundboard, OR: Glue the bridge first and then apply all of the finnish (masking off the bridge using masking tape). @ Stew McDonald's they use the first technique (glueing the bridge after) some other builders do it the other way around. I was wondering if some of you have experienced the results of the two different techniques. Personally I came up with the following idea: a) Glueing bridge before finnishing: This seems to be easier to do, since no paint has to be removed, and the bridge can be easily masked off. BUT: Wouldn't the finnish crack at the rear end of the bridge once the strings stress the glued joints? b) Stripping the paint after finnishing and then glue the bridge would not stress the finnish at the bridge's side once the strings are in- stalled. But wouldn't this approach be more messy than the first one? I would look forward to some replies. \roland

Hmmm,, when ever I've had to remove a bridge, to reglue it,, there's always traces of finish under the bridge..... I've probably fixed 3 or 4.... Just some repair experience.... |
