2160.1 | Official DECJam notice. | GIAMEM::DERRICO | Stand and deliver! | Mon Apr 08 1991 10:21 | 76 |
|
Here's that official notice:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
****** Offical DECJam 1991 ******
******* Sunday July 14'th *******
** Hudson Elks @ the pavillion **
**** 12:00 noon till 6:00 pm ****
********** Rain or shine ********
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
Well...We're offically going to have it at the Hudson Elks. We took a look
at the place and said "this is it"... They have a humungous pavillion
next to a ball field, volley ball court, and some horse shoes pits...
What more can anyone ask for, Except a great sunny day and some great
music to go along with it!
For those worried about power...There's plenty to go around, believe me.
There is a bar and plenty of open space to catch some rays before, during,
and after the event.
Anyway, I have had to set some guidelines or rules as some call them, for
this years DECJam. I wanted to make it fair, across the board.
The information you need is:
* There will be 6 bands playing. (not at once though)
* The cost per person (musician) will be $12.00 per.
* The deadline for the money to be in is Thursday May 2'nd.
* It is important for the bands that have already shown an interest
(there are 6 already), to have their money in by then.
* There will be 40 minutes for each band to play. We ask that after
every set, each band make a concerted effort to remove their
equipment right away. Have your stuff set up and ready to go
before you get on too.
* The first band will play promptly at 12:00 noon se get there early!
** Note: The only guarantee that your band will play, is that you have
paid in Full.
** If there are any bands that are still interested in playing, and if
there is a full set of bands (there are 6 interested already - but
don't be disappointed), your band will be put in a queue. If a current
band backs out, or cannot pay by a certain date; the first band
in the queue will have a chance. Be prepaired to have the money ready
within a certain time if your band is chosen. It's first come, first -
serve.
** The bands that already have sent me mail: Please have your money in
by the due date. Send it in early if you can. Remember, It keeps
you enlisted to play. If the due date has passed, the queue's are
in. Also, please return the questionaire that I sent. It has questions
like: how many people in the band - who plays what instrument; etc...
If you've already sent it back in, thanks.
***I will keep all updated for any changes or additions.***
I will send all bands a notice as to where to send the money.
Regards,
John D'Errico

2160.2 | WTF? | CAVLRY::BUCK | ANACONDA just daze away! | Mon Apr 08 1991 11:23 | 20 |
| May I take a minute to say WTF?
A couple of days ago you post the DECjam 1991 note in here, then today
you put the "official announcement in (ok, it IS going to happen), and
you have this:
>It is important for the bands that have already shown an interest
>(there are 6 already), to have their money in by then.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
in there?!?
I think it would have been nice if you had made the arrangements (hall,
money, date, etc.) THEN asked in this conference "ok, who would like to
play?".
Buck, confused how you got 6 bands already slated to play for an event
that had not been officially announced yet?!
PS - It's a bad day for me anyways...the American Coaster Enthusiasts
Preservation Conference is that day!

2160.4 | Back off... | GIAMEM::DERRICO | Stand and deliver! | Mon Apr 08 1991 12:37 | 33 |
| WAIT! [Water on!]
Bill, I already explained to you what happened. I don't need
any flames- PERIOD. If there is any moaning, do it off line.
For our other readers here's the scoop. Any apologies are sent
out NOW. And there have been NO FAVORITES either.
In the Music conference. A peer had started a note inquiring
about this years DECJam. People were saying that "they would
help if.." After a couple weeks went by, I decided that I would
take over. I got tired of people not wanting to take the initiative.
It took me a while to get things going. As soon as I said that
I would take over, there were already bands knocking at my mail
box. I had wanted to announce the gig after I found a place to
have it, but the bands had already accumulated to 6.
I tried to announce it after I realized that there is another
notes conference to be informed - Before I had actually announced
the official date.
There is a Queue. If your band is interested, sign up.
I would probably be a little miffed about not being given a chance
to play. That's why I started a queue. It's just the order of events
that happened. The only thing I can project that I could have done,
(and not realized until this note) is to have not taken any bands
until I announced it.
We are only limited to a certain amout of time to hold this event.
It's for ALL people to participate in. There are no biases as to who
can play. There are no favorites.
Regards,
John

2160.5 | but thanx for the explanation anywho | CAVLRY::BUCK | ANACONDA just daze away! | Mon Apr 08 1991 12:43 | 3 |
| Was I flaming? Merley inquiring!
Buck, who doesn't read the MUSIC conference.
|
2160.6 | No flames | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | I'll have 2 all-u-can-eat platters | Mon Apr 08 1991 15:16 | 22 |
| Not flaming either but you must understand our (Buck and my)
feeling that we got locked out a bit unfairly.
We have a band that has been rehearsing, there was never anything
that said what to do to get a spot. In fact, it said something
like "wait for details".
So we waited.... you know the rest.
I'm sure there was no intended bias in the band selection, but there
was an unintended bias in that people who were fortunate enough to
ignore the "wait" thing and contact you got selected over people
that didn't.
However, I know what it's like to organize one of these things, and
shit happens even when you don't intend it to.
So make no mistake - we really appreciate your stepping forward to
organize this thing and there aren't any hard feelings - we're just
dissapointed because we've spent the time rehearsing and all.
Peace and again, genuine thanks for stepping forward to make it happen.
|
2160.7 | so? | MRCSSE::LEITZ | butch leitz | Mon Apr 08 1991 15:32 | 8 |
| Well, at the risk of stating the obvious, if we have more
people interested in doing an organized DECjam than we have
slots for.... lets have two DECjams, what the heck? It's not
like there are rules, y'know. The first DECjam had 8 bands
playing, this ones only got slots for 6. So if we have 10
bands that wanna jamout, lets hold DECjam 91 A and B, or
"Summerjam" and "LaterintheSummerjam" or dayjam and nightjam
or...
|
2160.9 | I would do it differently next time... | GIAMEM::DERRICO | Stand and deliver! | Mon Apr 08 1991 16:34 | 18 |
|
I guess that we learn by doing.... It's the first thing that
I've organized. We could add it to the list of "things to do, and
things not to do" book. I definately would have done things differently
"If I had only known..."
I was also thinking along the lines of what Butch had mentioned.
There can also be another DJ of somesort. It's entirely possible!
Anyway, As far as openings are concerned...Nothing is official in
the who_will_play department until each group's monies are in.
There still is a chance to get in!
Sorry,
Peace.

re -.12
When you start getting into more than 6- bands, it tends to be
tedious. It's possible to have 7 bands, but each band would probably
only get 30 to 35 min's to play. Not a whole lot of time.

((6 x 60=360)/40(set length))=9 40 minute slices.
limited to 8 sets (not 9) leaves 40 minutes / 8 bands = 5
minutes to change bands.
2 drums sets, 2 key set ups, enough other gear to
enable walk up and play (drummers and keys of next band
fine tune while the other band is playing) = no hassle
PA settings = fun = more bands = more music = crazy but
it might just work...

2160.19 | 2 more slots are open. | GIAMEM::DERRICO | Stand and deliver! | Tue Apr 09 1991 14:15 | 17 |
| Well....Ok.
I have arranged to start the event 1-hour earlier at 11:00 am
Sunday July 14'th. We will take in TWO more bands. Send money now.
I do not wish to have mutiny in, or out of this company. This will
require a much more aggressive schedule. I will need everyones
cooperation as far as setting up, and removing equipment.
I will also put more emphasis on getting house equpment. We need
Bass, Drums, and a keybard amp. I'm not shure about guitar amps -
everyone has their own owner....
The cost will be $11.00 per musician instead of $12.00. I will
reimberse those who have already sent their monies in. I will give a
definate time_to_play/band in a while.
Be excellent.

2160.20 | If I play, you can use my keys | DREGS::BLICKSTEIN | I'll have 2 all-u-can-eat platters | Tue Apr 09 1991 15:18 | 25 |
| If my band plays - I will volunteer my keyboards and my keyboard amp.
My keyboards are:
o Roland RD-300 88 key weighted Digital Piano which has 3 piano
sounds, clav, harpsichord, vibraphone and 2 electric piano
sounds (Rhodes and Wurly)
o Ensoniq SQ-80 (or I might bring my VFX-SD) synthesizer. I've
got 2400+ sounds for it including some great organ sounds.
o Roland U-220 sample player - good for horns, strings, backing
vocals, etc.
My amp is a JC-120. It's an open back amp, but I think it does great
as a keyboard amp and it has a killer chorus on it.
I'd be happy to let other keyboard players use this stuff as long as
they are good to it (no Jerry Lee Lewis pounding, no Elton John
handstands, etc.)
I've generally supplied the keys for most of the past DECjams. It's
much easier than having each keyboard player setup and breakdown.

2160.22 | Is it Possible??? | FREEBE::LOUVAT | | Mon Apr 22 1991 10:50 | 16 |
| Hey, this thing sounds like it's gonna be a good time to be had by all.
Putting this together to make it happen is certainly a bit of a task.
I'm really curious as to the kind of bands that are going to be play-
ing....G.B....Rock....Fusion....Top 40....Country Music...What????
Can one come to play with a band if he doesn't have one he's pre-
sently gigging with?
If this is possible I'd like a crack at it...I've had many years
of proffesional experience but at this time I'm not playing due to the
many other committments I have in my life. My forte'is Country Music,
but I've covered many other types in my experiences. At any rate, I'd
like to hear and meet some of you local and not so local musicians and
get to swap some ideas musically and instrumentally.
I'll be watching...................

This is an informal list of the bands that you will be hearing at this
year's DECJam '91. This is a random list, and doesn't reflect playing order
of each band.
Bands having the "(unnamed)" term after thier band names, means that the
band has not decided on an official name yet. I just gave filler names for
the time being.
I will give an official playing-order list shortly. One thing to note
is that we have an open slot for a band! If your band is interested, please
read the previous guidelines concerning your reservations! We now have seven
bands that are paid up. Thanks everybody!
Best regards,
/John

Hi everyone!
On Sunday July 14'th, there will be 8 - bands playing at this year's
DECJam. There's only one problem though... We only have 6 - bands. We
now have *Two* available openings.
Two possibilities for your band to entertain the zillions of other
enthusiastic DECcies who will be there to see us all! Why hold out?
What are you waiting for?
"Can you say "Yes I can?"... I knew you could."
Here's a recap of what is needed and what is happening...
* This year's DECJam is being held at the Hudson Elks at the Pavillion in
Hudson, Mass.
* If there are 8 - Bands, Each band will have a 35 Minute set to play.
* The cost is $11.00 per person (for the musicians). This pays for the
Rental of the pavillion, pays for the sound person. And Sound has
never been cheap! $11.00 keeps you from smoking that carton of cigabutts
that you are trying to kick the habit from!
* If there are 8 - Bands, the start time is 11:00 am.
* There will be a bar right in the pavillion.
* There are horseshoe pits, volleyball court, and a humongous field next
to the pavillion. Bring your softballs, gloves, bats, frisbees,
next of kin...
If you are interested in playing at this year's DECJam, let me know!
I can be reached at:
GIAMEM::DERRICO
DTN: 297-5368
Thanks!

| as someone who's played at several of these in the past, I feel that
6 bands is better than 8 for a couple of reasons:
1. Less logistical hassles
2. Everybody gets to play longer
35 minutes is an awfully short time; everybody's going to feel like
sneaking a few extra minutes and pretty soon you' re running over.
Leave yourself some slack.

*************************** DECJAM '91 ************************************
Here are some random Questions and Comments from the SummerJam'91
organizers on the shindig:
o Please listen to the directions given. Please keep out of the stage-
area when you are not required to be there.
o What if it rains?
- No rain date has been set. We will go on *rain* or *shine*.
o What about food and drinks?
- You can bring your own food. You can plan a picnic and bring whatever you
like to eat. There are picnic tables, or you can sit out in the field.
- There will also be a cash bar open for drinks.
o What about the power for the equipment?
- Remember to bring everything you need! You can assume there will be some
plugs for you to use, but do not assume we are going to provide the
extension cords.
- You will be responsible for making sure you have all the power cords for
your equipment, plus some 20 feet of cable to get to the power source.
o What should you bring?
- Power cords, power cords.
- Equipment you'll be using: amps, instruments, cymbals, guitar stands.
- Equipment you've agreed to let others borrow.
- Spare patch cords, picks, strings, fuses, drumsticks, power cords.
- For space and security reasons, don't bring equipment that won't be used.
- Microphones, bass amp, keyboard set up and basic drum kit will be provided.
o What time should you show up?
- Any time after 9:00 am if you would like to help set up.
- Anytime after 11:10 am, but no later than one hour before your band's
scheduled playing time. Once you arrive, go to the stage area and check in with
the Stage Manager.
If you have agreed to lend your equipment to be used as "house equipment",
you should plan on getting there by no later then 10:30 am.
o What about the stage?
- There are no risers available. We will have an area where the we will
setup as stage. We'll be playing on a cement floor. It is recommended
that you don't play barefoot.
Only band members and sound crew will be permitted on the stage area.
o Where should I put my equipment?
- Since we are going to be out doors, we do not have a room that the
unused equipment can be stored. It might be best to keep the equipment
locked in your vehicle.
o Please be ready to go on the stage at least 10 minutes before your
set starts. Each band should setup their equipment prior to setting up
on stage.
o We do not have a stage crew. You are responsible for moving your stuff
on and off of the stage area. We ask that you help everyone involved,
by removing your equipment as soon as your set is finished! This will
help greatly!
- Break down of equipment should be done off the stage area.
o There'll be time for a quick fine-tune on the stage, but keep it to a
minimum by pre-tuning.
o For the general public: There is a volleyball court, horseshoe pits, and a
"large" playing field for football, frisbee, and softball. You should plan
on bringing your own equipment. The volleyball court might not have a net -
Volenteers will be welcomed for this.
o Lets all have a good time!

Just as a cordial note; All friends and families of DECPeoples
are invited to attend this year's DECJam. There is no cover charge
and no age limit.
There will be however, checking of I.D.'s for the bar. There will
also be the proverbial hat passed around for volenteer donations. This
will help defer the costs of holding this event.
DECJam '91 Coordinators.

| re: Directions from the deep south
Sending folks a good several miles out of their way... the great circle
route. I can only assume the author has a fixation on rte 117.
Instead of going up to exit 27 (rte 117), get off at exit 26, which is
rte 62. Head east and this takes you directly into the center of Hudson.
Bear right at the aforementioned rotary (towards the MacDonald's) and
you'll see Park Street on your right.

*** Cross Posted from MUSIC notes ***
The first review?
I was there for 4 bands:
Mystic Powers
Tom Gallo/Alan Starr (geez I hope I was there for this.. ;^) )
Brand X Rock and Roll
Earth Movers
The review:
Mystic Powers - I'm not too familar with this style of music, so I
can't really review it accurately. It seemed to be well played and
the band seemed pretty tight.
Tom Gallo/Alan Starr - Heh, heh, What can I say, these guys are
awesome.. ;^). Anyway we were pleased with our performance and I
hope to get some good critical feedback.
Brand X - A good set. The broken string thing really blew the wind out
of your sails, though. Overall a good set.
Earth Movers - A really impressive set. The highlight for me was
"Superstition", which was easily the best tune. Other faves were
Godzilla and of course, Big Bottom. Oh yeah, "Birdland" was good
too. The mix wasn't great on John's bass in the early going. It
got fixed about halfway through Superstition. Rick: That's a great
looking J-bass..
Soapbox time:
For the second year in a row this event was marred by someone's lack
of, to put it diplomatically, foresight when it comes to language.
DECjam is supposed to be a "family" event and cursing through through
the P.A. just plain shouldn't happen. Perhaps for future DECjams, it
needs to be clearly communicated to "keep it clean"..
Ok, I'm off my soapbox now... ;^)
Many thanks to John and Miguel for handling the arrangements.
