2077.2 | Price Blowout on Alesis drum machine | MILKWY::JACQUES | Vintage taste, reissue budget | Wed Jan 09 1991 12:34 | 7 |
| Alesis has been blowin' out their drum machines for $299. I think
the model number is MT16B. These used to sell for $500, and even
at that price, they were an awesome machine.
I want one !!!!

| MT16-B???
...far as I know, Alesis has 3 drum machines out. The original HR16,
the HR16-B, and the new SR16. $449, $449, and $399 MSLP respectively.
The HR16-B might be the only one I could imagine being "blown out" as
it was pretty much a dog, despite some killer sounds. $299 would be
a "fair" price, but no major bargain.
...contact me off line for some other comments.

re: HR-16
HR-16s are going for $299 at Daddy's. I understand that Alesis
just lowered some of their list prices and the HR-16 was one
of the products affected. HR-16B's are $399 at Daddy's.

| The info I got was from the December Keyboard, and was probably a
few months old...
$299 isn't a bad price for an HR-16, but it is the top end of what
I'd pay for (another) one.

| From what I understand, the HR16B was meant to be slaved to the HR16...
As in, you are supposed to buy both.

| With a chip swap to the HR16, you could slave the HR16-B to it and
use some of the features across the MIDI buss, but it's not necessary
to have the original before you can use the B.

| This note asks about an affordable drum machine and promply
people change it to a $400.oo + machine. Its kind of like
someone saying " can anyone tell me about the Ford Escort
" and people replying " You should look into the BMW 3 series
Some of us musicians cannot afford 400$ drum machines and kitty
hawk 2000$ amps. Lets be serious for a minute O.K. ???
Set flame=low
Has anyone tried the machine in question ?

re: Cheap drum machines
What do you want the drum machine for? If you want to do
metronome type stuff or maybe even demo tapes, check out older
used stuff like the TR-505 or TR-707. I bought my '505 for less
than $100 a coupla months ago. It doesn't have the latest "gee
whiz" features or the latest sampled drum sounds, but it's a
reasonably good sounding, easy to use, cheap drum machine.

2077.11 | good values just the same | MILKWY::JACQUES | Vintage taste, reissue budget | Fri Jan 11 1991 10:32 | 18 |
| The unit I was referring to in .2 is the HR16B. Sorry for the
confusion.
Daddy's Junky Music in Shrewsbury is selling these for $299.00
This is a pretty good price considering they were originally
listed at $599.00 The original HR16 blew away a lot of competing
units in it's day when they were selling for ~$500. The 16B is
an updated version of it. I know the author of this note is
looking for a cheap drum machine, but to me getting an HR16B
for $299 is a great value. It reminds me of the MidiverbII which
originally sold for $399. After they were out for a couple of
years, the price dropped as low as $200.
BTW one of the biggest selling points on the Kitty Hawk gear was
the blow-out prices that were available. $800 preamps for $250 !!
$1000 combos for $300. Can't beat those prices

| Got carried away with righteous indignation. Daddys in Nashua had
a Kitty hawk head USED for 500$ I'm Lookin' for the king tone
but thats not gonna' be it. The kawai may be a few steps above
a metronome, but it also may be a heck of alot more user friendly
than most drum machines. I'v got a boss machine that I STILL haven't
figured out.

I bought one of these for 225.00 several months ago. It sounds
pretty good through the p.a. for practice. It's easy to program
and suits me fine. At 225.00 though, the Alesis at 299.00 sounds
better. But when I bought it, the HR-16 were still ~375.
In general playing along with a drum machine makes me want a
real (!) drummer. :-).
But, I am suprised at the quality of sound from this little box.

| re: .-1
Which "little box" do you have? The Dr. Rhythm, or the Studio Trainer?
Thanks to others for trying to bring the topic back on track. The unit
I originally asked about is not just a drum machine. It can do bass and
rhythm tracks too, according to the ads. No, it's not MIDI, but it
doesn't cost $400, either.
