My local music store has a solid state VOX Beatle amp that hasn't
moved in a long time (and it's going for 1/40th the price of an
AC-30TB). Somewhere along the line they lost the footswitch. Could one
be re-constructed from the schematics? I don't think the thing even had
LED's on the footswitch (they probably were not invented yet, we're
talking 1960's!).

| I don't have the schematics, but I'd bet that the switch is just a
straight push-on-push-off SPST switch. The only problem would be
figuring out where to hook the switch across. By the way, what's the
switch for? Trem? Reverb?
I think you're right that LEDs weren't invented when that amp came out.
If that's a Super Beatle they got, I remember a friend of mine had one
way back when. It was a really great sounding amp. He's still got it
and swears by it.
Can't believe they're selling it for $40 though!

Actually he wants $100. If it has the original Celestion Bulldogs
(the ONLY british parts in Thomas built Voxes) the speakers alone are
worth it.
It's not a Super Beatle. Just a Beatle. The footswitch jack is
like a din connector. Switchable things should be
channels/reverb/top_boost.
Wish I had bought the AC-50 for $400 when I had a chance! Stupid me!

| Sounds like one of the VOX models marketed by Thomas Organ here in the
US. They were all solid state and have almost nothing in common with the
UK models (like AC30) except the grill cloth and name. I have a catalog
of the US VOX products from 1966. Amp names like the Beatle, Super
Beatle, Buckingham, something-shire. I believe the Super Beatle had a
built in fuzztone. Dunno about the Beatle. Don't know what kind of
speakers they used, either.

Thomas Organ did make one tube Vox amp (probably after buyers got wise
to the sound difference). Somebody know what model this was? Seen one?
The Beatle does have a top boost switch, no Tone-X.

| Thomas may have made a few tube Vox models. A friend owns a real small
(Champ sized) one that's tube and is clearly marked as made by Thomas.
Tone-X is only found on Vox amps intended for use with bass (the Super
Beatle had a bass channel).

2052.9 | It was published in Guitar Player | BSS::STPALY::MOLLER | Fix it before it breaks | Thu Jul 23 1992 14:40 | 15 |
| There was an issue of Guitar Player from around 1982 with an article
by 'Tiesco Del Ray' that had the schematic that you seek; I distinctly
recall that he had to make up his own from an old schematic (the footswitch
controlled 2 things, distortion being one of them, and I don't remember
what the other one was), evedently most of these amps have lost the footswitch.
'Tiesco Del Ray' was an author who did reviews on old equipment that was
either bizzare, short lived, or things that people forgot about. It was
either his column or another one that did reviews on old Amplifiers.
I'm sure that I still have the issue; If you are ever in Colorado Springs
look me up & you can see if you can find it in my massive stack of old
magazines.

2052.10 | Thomas trannies ain't VOX tubies | TRUCKS::LITTEN | | Tue Jul 28 1992 08:30 | 14 |

I seem to remember the Aspen Pitman "Tube Amp" Book...or similar title has a
load of schematics in the back...VOX included. It may contain the
schematic you need.
The book also talked about the Thomas US versions of so-called VOX amps..said
they were just VOX cabs with junky Thomas transistor amps inside.
Be careful what you are buying...though as you say, the speakers alone are worth
the price you are paying...!!

| If needed, I have EVERY Vox schematic printed, US/UK (U-SUK?) send me
a SASE, and I'll send ya copies....just remind me what ya need.
For the record, Thomas did NOT invent SS Vox, as the UK had them for
years, but as with most all SS British stuff, it was junk. The designs
were VERY CLOSE to what T.O. made. There are a few Super Beatles
that are better then most, some used FET's, some did not. Some used
Non-Polarized caps in the signal path, some did not. This made a BIG
diff. Also, when ya find a good SB, they are great sounding amps. I
have 2, one with factory JBLs, the other with Bulldogs. The JBLs
sounded BETTER, by the way. The big cabs had horns, but they did
make a few 8-12" stacks. Chicago music in AZ bought out most every
leftover SS T.O. amp/organ/guitar, and gets stupid, danger $$$$ for
them.
Just my 2 cents.
