2010.1 | Some of the "budget" Washburns (EA20/EA30)... | BAHTAT::CARR | | Thu Oct 25 1990 10:19 | 5 |
| Some of the cheaper Washburn electro-acoustics are in opaque colours
(black, white, red?). This means they don't have to use wood with
"nice" grain. I don't know if the same applies to their purely
acoustic guitars.

| I've seen quite a few black acoustics, some were cheap, some weren't
In fact, I remember looking at a farily nice Guild that was black,
had a hefty $899 price tage on it...
I've also seen some Kramer thin bodies in opaque colors.... Some
looked nice, some were just a little too gawdy... (A hot pink one
made me want to review lunch...)
Some of my fav. styles of finish are clear coat birds eye maple, tobacco
sunburst, and deep mahogony (fwiw)
For me, I prefer finishes on all guitars that bring out, or
at lesat show the wood grain.

At the Martin factory, I saw a black acoustic that was built to take to shows
as an example of what they could do. I was told that it was harder to paint
a guitar than to do the clear finish.

| Most of the pictures and videos I have seen of Paul Simon in recent
years shows him with a black acoustic guitar. Actually, I can't recall
if the entire guitar is black or just the face of it.

| I've seen *lots* of nice black acoustics and quite a few white ones.
Not a lot of other colors, but every once in a while you see a blue or
blue sunburst.
About the funniest thing I ever saw was a metalflake red (get this...)
FLYING V SHAPED acoustic! I think there was a matching metalflake blue
one too. I bet that guy NEVER sold those things.

I *believe* the acoustic Paul Simon played in the Central Park concert
was a standard Ovation Legend acoustic/electric, with a black face.
Nice sound, too....
My brother has a Custom Balladeer that's a dead ringer for Simon's
Legend; curiously, I feel that it sounds a bit duller than my natural-
top Custom Balladeer. But he doesn't seem to mind..... :^)

| I think Paul is playing a black Washburn in the video for his new
song but I can't say for sure.
If he'd only stnd still, my eyes are hurting.

| I recently (I know your all gonna think "you PAINTED your guitar")
painted my Yamaha acoustic a nice cream color. I really took my
time and wet sanded between coats and buffed the final coat out
and it came out real nice. It doesn't seem to have affected the tone
at all. And I get alot of complements on it. I planned on buying a
new guitar anyway so I figured if I wrecked it I really didn't care.
But I didn't and no one else has a guitar just like it!

| The black guitar that Paul Simon's been playing lately is something other than
an Ovation. I can't make out any insignia on it, but it looks alike a quality
axe.

I *think* it's a Yamaha.

2010.13 | Black - sorta | DENVER::MALKOSKI | | Thu Nov 01 1990 17:34 | 14 |
| Paul Simon has been playing a custom Yamaha acoustic since before the
Graceland album and tour. A very nice acoustic with a black finish and
Martin 45 style abolone trim on the top. Very atractive.
I have a custom Taylor Grand Concert size guitar (same as a Martin 000
or OM) that has a spruce top and flamed maple back and sides. It's
black - sorta. They took a black stain and wiped it on then wiped it
off. It reveals the grain of both the spruce and the maple. Whenever
I pull it out of its case I get great compliments. Every picker comes
over and wants to know about it. Last I heard, Taylor has been
thinking about offering this guitar as a "standard" model.
