| .. and you know what I say to a $800 tube preamp with only three
sounds instead of four?
Seriously, they probably are nice but I've never seen one in a
store. For that price I would "Boogie", you never know when these
upsatart companies are going to belly up. You're talking to a
maniac with KH and Metaltronix in his rack. Then I play a B.C. Rich
American made axe and they aren't made anymore neither! I'll tell
you what companies going out of business next right after I buy
one of their products.

| I'm sure those things can be had for less...The MP1 had a $799 retail
too...
BUT...For the bucks I think I'd want more than two EQ setting available
at call up...Hence, why I like MIDI.

a simpler, more straight-forward configuration?

| I didn't say that. *For me* the MP1 *is still* the preamp of choice,
although it's not for everyone. I've heard Alan Starrs Kittyawk
Quattro and it surgically removed my gnads. I loved the sound.
My little Marshall Micro stack head preamping my rig sounds KILLER
too... There are plenty of good preamps out there. The trick is to
find one that is verstile enough for your needs.
The last band I played in covered everything from Black Sabbath to
James Taylor. I needed to go from rippin' gain to pure-pristine-clean
at the touch of a button and a lot of tones in between. Thats where the
MP1 really shines; it's verstile up the whazoo...

re: Mike
I think that there are probably many reasons there would be Mp-1s on
the used market.
The Mp-1 has been around long enough that there's just a lot of them
out there, naturally there will be some for sale. Musicians are
naturally fickle, and many of them that use music for a living find
themselves having to sell off their stuff to get by when gigs get
scarce.
Remember that Buck's in an area with a big used instrument market too,
I've *never* seen one for sale around here!
Notice that they're still bringing pretty good prices, showing their
continued popularity. The average price I've seen for a piece of used
musical equipment seems to be about half of what it goes for new. If
it's bringing much more then that then it's either in exceptional
condition or it's a high demand item.
You should know by now that guitar players can't ever keep the same rig
for too long without some irrational desire to get change it. I've
even thought about selling my Mp-1... (don't be sending me offers yet,
it's NOT for sale right now)

| waaaaaiitaminit! Say no to three sounds! I've got four "sounds"
in my preamps but that don't mean just four sounds. Keep in mind
I'm coming out of the KH into a GSP-21 that gives me seven bands
of EQ and adjustable + or - 12db in 1db increments. So - I have
the KH EQing pre-gain (in the Testarossa), the GSP-21 EQing post
gain, plus the GSP doing the effecting - only three sounds??

1993.9 | Tube steak !! | MILKWY::JACQUES | Yes, you do need a Boogie | Tue Oct 09 1990 13:47 | 30 |
| I agree that it is scary owning something that can't be easily/readily
fixed. I owned a KH Quattro for about a month, but eventually traded
it in for a Mesa Boogie Studio preamp. The main reason was the Studio
has the speaker emulator circuit, but there are other features as well
that the Quattro didn't have (like stereo efx loop, reverb, etc).
I do not regret selling the Quattro, because I have heard countless
horror stories about fried transformers and other problems. There is
no factory-authorized repair center for KH. Mesa Boogie, on the other
hand will stand behind their products into the next century and beyond.
Not only that, the Mesa is practically bullet-proof, so I don't expect
to have too many problems with it anyways.
Since I bought my Studio Preamp (mainly for recording), My Fender "The
Twin" has not seen much use. I have been driving the Studio preamp into
my PA and playing straight through my PA speakers in stereo. I"m running
a MidiVerbII in the efx loop of the preamp, and the stereo effect is
cat's-ass. The other night, I decided to try something differant. I
connected the monitor send from my PA mixer into the power amp input
(efx return jack) of my Twin. Now the mono signal comes through the
Twin and the stereo signal comes through my PA speakers. What a sound !!
I can see a definate advantage to having more than 2-3 sounds available,
but for me two is enough. The graphic EQ on the Studio preamp gives you
the ability to kick in a tone boost, so it actually amounts to having
four differant tones. BTW, the Studio preamp sells for $595 and IMHO
it is well worth every penny.

<Just say no to only three sounds... ;^)
"Whitey" is just jealous! ;^)
Seriously, GTS has not effected me for last 6 months, at least! I
have not had the desire to go out and find a completely different rig
that I have fallen in love with in the store. I'll take it home, and
it'll end up sounding like me, anyways... ;^(
Now, another Boogie half stack, well, that's a different story.
Heh, heh, heh!
