1957.0. "Body Material for Home Made Bass" by POLAR::CALDWELL () Fri Sep 07 1990 14:11
Some of you may remember a note I entered several months ago
about building a 6 string bass. I was looking for advice on
pickups that would be wide enough to use on a beast like this.
Well, that's all put to bed, but I would be really interested to
know what some of you folks would suggest in another area of this
home brew project.
Delivery of the neck is imminent....I've had someone else do that
part for me. Now, I have to decide on the material to be used for
the body wings.
I first thought I would go with all maple, but I think that will
make the instrument too heavy, and maybe even too bright. What I
would like to know is, what kind of wood should be used for the
wings, to give the bass good depth and body?
So you will know what I'm working with, the neck is a "neck thru"
design, rock maple, with fret board of the same material. The
pickups of choice were EMG Select P bass ('cause cost *is* a
determining factor here). This will be retrofitted when budget
allows, with Bartolini electronics, providing bass, treble and
pickup panning.
Bear in mind, I want this thing to be bright, but not overbearing.
The right body wing materials should give me the depth and body
that I also want to have.
Well guys, whadaya think?
Thanks large,
Barry
