1911.0. "What is a Sun "Alpha four"" by WJOUSM::MAY (IT'S LIKE THE SAME, ONLY DIFFERENT!) Mon Jul 23 1990 15:19

I picked up a "SUN" model "Alpha four" unit that looks like a four
channel mixing board. It is wedge shaped, has four 1/4 inch high
impedenceinputs in the front, two high impedence speaker out jacks
that say 100 watts maximum, effect in and out, reverb foot pedal
jack, with five turn knobs that control reverb, volume, effects,
sound for each channel. It also has a clipping light and a master
    volume knob.

It does have an amplifier in it but not big enough to drive a set
of Peavy SP3's or even a radio shack bookself speaker. The sound
breaks up and is full of static,, also low volume. Was it entended
to be used with a larger power amp?? or is something wrong with it.

Have any idea what the worth of something like this is???

    Thanks in advance

An Alpha Four is a four-channel 100 watt RMS PA head. Sounds like the
power amp is blown. A working one in good shape would bring about
    $150.

1911.2How hard is it to fix a blown ampWJOUSM::MAYIT'S LIKE THE SAME, ONLY DIFFERENT!Mon Jul 23 1990 16:1710
    Thanks Brian

Any idea if this thing is worth fixing??? or should it be tossed in
the junk pile?? If it were a 10, 20 or even 50 dollar part thats gone
than I would think it would be worth it.

    Thanks again

I think the alpha series were "mos-fet" amps. the trannies may be hard
to get and you would have to take precautions as thgey are STATIC
SENSITIVE. If you can have it fixed for less than 50$ -why not?

Repairs might be pretty simple. I bought a Peavey PA-900 about 2
weeks ago. It was totaly dead (except for the little muffin fan & that worked
fine). Paid $50.00 for it. I got it home (it's a large beast) & popped the
back cover off & found that one of the power supply connectors was unplugged.

I reconnected it & made a few checks with my Ohm-meter. All looked
good so I hooked up some cheap speakers on it. It worked fine. I then connected
my P.A. cabinets to it. Also worked fine.

What I figure happened was that the person who owned it previously
had tried to replace the lights in the VU meters & forgot to plug in the
power supply when they reassembled it.

	So, for $50.00, I got a 9 channel board with a 400 watt RMS
power amp & all of the associated hardware. The pots are a bit noisy, but
it's been used for the last 6 gigs (we play thurs/fri/sat at a club here
in Colorado Springs) & it works quite well.
