I have a good source for custom-gauge non-electric strings. I get a dozen
sets delivered to my door C.O.D. for about $36.00.

I know of another place where I just recently ordered some
.010 and .013 guage strings from. They're $2.97 a dozen for
whatever guage you want. (Can't remember if they're name
brand or not, but they're all your standard sized strings.)
They also offer bulk ordering of alot of name brand strings
as well. I just got a set of D`Addario `XL Reds' Bass
strings from them for $13.00. (Now THAT is cheap compared to
the music shops around here !!)
It's called Musicians Friend and they're from Oregon. I have
the catalog at home and can post more information as to what
their mailing address and ordering information is, tomorrow.

| Has anyone ever had experiences with bulk strings "going bad" after a
period of time? I mean things like rusting in the package, etc. I've
had this happen to spare strings kept in the case and was just wondering
if you *had* to use up that dozen packages within a year or whatever.

| Ahh, you gotta shop around a bit, but that $36.... price was real
close to what I've been paying.
To buy them at a local retailer, one set at a time,,, is murder...
Qunatity pruchase is about the only way to go... A case lasts me quite a while..
certainly worth the money, and it's so nice to you got lots and lots
of strings...

| I've bought boxes of strings right from my local music stores. When
purchasing a large number like that they'll typically cut you a good
deal. I know I got at least as good a deal (maybe better I don't
really remember the last box I got) on GHS Boomers.
I've had absolutely no problem with them going bad in storage and yes,
one box lasted about a year.

Well, looks like someone beat me to getting the information
in here, but thanks. :^)
Also, when I received those strings from Musicians Friend,
they came in a bad that also had a small bag of dessicant in
them. Keeps things from getting moist and rusty. At least
they're thinking ! :^)
Good luck !

like $29.00 for a case of Marcley's... I ought to see if I can dig up the
number again...

About 3 months ago I bought a box of Boomers for $40(I assumed the
price was a little higher since it was custom gauge) ordered thru
Rice Music and I've gone thru about 6 sets on my 4 elec guitars,
and had a couple of friends try them. I guess I saved about $10
buying it by the box. These were packaged by the set, by the way.
And since we here at Colorado don't really have to worry about the
humidity level as ya'll do out East, I wouldn't mind buying my next
batch this way. Now, only if I can keep my Floys from keep busting
these strings...

1882.14 | string sale from Musician's Friend | NAVIER::STARR | Would you like to go to heaven tonite | Thu Aug 23 1990 13:29 | 28 |
| Musician's Friend, a mail-order catalog firm, has a pretty good sale on
guitar and bass strings in this month's issue. An example of the prices:
D'Addario Phosphor - $3.50
D'Addario XLs - $2.60
GHS Boomers - $3.19
Fender Super Bullet - $3.45
Ernie Ball Slinkys - $2.90
Dean Markley - $3.30
For bass players:
D'Addario XLs - $9.90
GHS Boomers - $13.90
That's about the lowest I've seen on the GHS Boomers, so I think I might order
ten or even twenty sets. I figure even with the p&h charge ($3.95 for orders
between $25-$50), it works out pretty good. And if you already get their
catalog, there's even a coupon for $2.50 off any order between $25-$50.
Mathwise for 10 sets: $31.90 + $3.95 shipping - $2.50 coupon = $3.34/set
Mathwise for 20 sets: $63.80 + $4.95 shipping - $5.00 coupon = $3.19/set
Pretty cheap!
The number for Musician's Friend is 1-800-776-5173 for more info....

And for those that have gold tone hardware (like me) on their
basses, the D'Addario `XL Reds' Copper/Nickel Round Wound are
$12.90 a set. I put a set of those on my Yamaha MB-II and
they look hot. Much better than gold tone hardware with
nickel strings.
Only thing is, you have to polish the reddish tint off of
them to make them look `gold'. They must be dusted or
something, cause Windex took care of it with no problem.

| re: last few
I just called Musician's Friend to order 20 sets of GHS strings (at a final
cost of $3.19/set!). I guess they musta restocked, because they said they
would be here in 8-10 working days. Just wanted to remind people that the
sale is on for another month or so, if you want to take advantage of it.

| Has anyone had good/bad service from Musician's Friend? The reason I
ask is that I called them 6-8 weeks ago for a catalog; having not
received it, I called them again 3 weeks ago and was told yes, they had
my name, just hadn't had time to send it yet. I still haven't gotten
it. I'd love to buy from them, but if they can't even get a CATALOG to
me, well, you can see my concern.
Are they better at filling sales orders than catalog orders?

| I've only ordered from them once, a few months ago, but I received most
of my order by UPS within about 4 days. There was one item (a book)
that was backordered and it took about three weeks before it showed up.
They were very nice on the phone and I was pleased with the service.
If they had something I couldn't get locally I'd order from them again.
I thought most of their prices were just average, I could do as well
locally. I also like to support my local music stores, I do most of my
business with them and they know it and give me fair prices in return.
