1878.0. "Texas Guitar Slingers" by RAVEN1::BLAIR (I like EVH, EC, & Jimi (SO THERE!)) Fri Jun 22 1990 17:57

Let's talk Texas born bad boys. I'm a big fan of Mason Ruffner and
Omar and the Howlers. The raunchier, the better. I like Anson
Funderburgh and the Rockets a lot too.

Omar Dykes: "I'm basically a Neanderthal on guitar - I have to have
my guitars (Strats) modified so they won't fly apart" GP

Of course Eric Johnson is from Texas too... Life's wild, ain't it?

You got me too ! I love that stuff, but being from Aussie, we don't
hear of some of the more "underground guys". Any chance of getting a
listing of recommended albums, recording companies etc for those listed
(Omar and the Howlers, Anson etc) in .0

Some of my faves include the Jimi & Stevie Ray Vaughan, & early Billy
Gibbons (is he Texan originally ?).

Did have the opportunity to visit Austin a few years back and just
loved it, unfortunately didn't have time to check the local music
    scene real thoroughly.

    Cheers,
    	    Jeff.

Omar and the Howlers have two (I think) albums out on Epic records, in
addition to their small label stuff.

Anson Funderburgh and the Rockets record for Black Top, which is a
    subsidiary of Rounder records.

How about the Tail Gators? These guys recorded for Wrestler and
Enigma. The guitarist Don Leady also does some Cajun fiddle work, ex
T-Bird Keith Ferguson was bassist until recently.

The Big Guitars From Texas... "jam" albums of various Austin players.
The first one, "Thrash, Twang and Thunder" was on Jungle records, the
second volume came out on Amazing records, and a CD compilation of the
two is on Rykodisk (confused yet?)

Evan Johns and the H-Bombs....these guys are real raw, have one CD out
from Ryko, not sure what label has their other stuff.

Anybody have the labels for the Le Roi Bros?

Mason Ruffner's "Gypsy Blood" still knocks me out. You can hear
the Hendrix influences (in the singing too) but he has his own style.
There are some slower bluesy numbers, but in general, this is a high
energy blues rocker. I have read that Mason puts on a wild show too.
He was supposed to play around here last year, but cancelled.

Well I don't know if these boys are from Texas, but I just happened to
see a band called "the Radiators". In fact I don't know anyting about
them at all, except their style of music now that I've seen 'em. Talk
about guitar playing! I haven't seen this kind of musicianship since I
saw "Little Feat" about a year and a half back. Same type of music.
I'll tell you, you can't play this type of guitar unless you're a full
timer. This type of music is tight.

See 'em if you get a chance.

1878.6Albert, Evan & Mason WAV13::PAGEBIt Ain't Easy Bein' CheezyWed Jul 04 1990 12:2628

I'd like to second the votes for both Mason Ruffner & Evan Johns as
being 2 hot players to check out.

Mason Ruffner's first LP didn't do much for me, but the "Gypsy's
Blood" album is excellent. Full of smokin' New Orleans-style blues.
An excellent LP to crank up & dance to, if you're into this type of music.

Evan Johns released an LP with the H-Bombs a few years ago on the
Alternative Tentacles label-- a label I'm sure all you Dead Kennedys
fans are familiar with. Evan's guitar playing (and singing, as well) is
raunchy, gritty, cranked-up, and crawls right up out of the big Texas
gutter to grab you by the throat. As it could be described as "Punk
Blues", the playing is rough & not technically orientated, which is
reason enough to love him in my book, but if you're into Steve Howe,
you'll probably find Evan Johns obnoxious.

And, of course, don't forget Albert Collins-- having been described
as having the "ice-pick-in-the-forhead" sound, Albert is one of the
greatest living guitar players. Like B.B. King (My personal pick for
THE single greatest guitarist EVER), Albert has the ability to floor
you by just hitting one note.

The Radiators are from New Orleans, the home of most of my favorite
bands. I caught them opening for Little Feat two years ago at Feat's
first reunion gig (New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival). Check
out the Meters (now defunct, but some members went on to form the
Nevilles) for some incredibly funky gumbo-rock!

    Regards,
    John Kelly-who-would-rather-be-on-Magnolia-Street.
1878.8Johnny Winter anybody?SALEM::WHEELER_PThu Jul 26 1990 15:2810

What's this? A Texas guitarist note without mentioning
    Johnny Winter?

My personal favorite musician, Johnny has been putting out
fairly consistant blues albums since around 1969, as well as
producing and playing on Muddy Waters last 4 albums. The man
is pure uncompromising blues guitar at its best.

Yessir! I am waiting for Still Alive and Well to come out on
CD! Highway 61 is also one of my favorite songs. I like when
guys play Jumpin' Jack Flash, they always say "Johnny Winter style?"

I first heard of this guy thru this conference, and then heard a couple
of tunes on 'BCN. I knew I had to hear more. I got the "Ah Via Musicom"
album this past weekend and have been mesmerized by this guy since.
I've got to say that this guy, for me, has lept from obscurity to the
top of the heap of my guitar favorites. I'm awed by Steve Vai, SRV,
EVH, Dickey Betts, and Dan Toler to name a few. But this Johnson kid is
something else because he is so diversified. He plays tasteful Rock
(for lack of a better term), does some really good country pickin',
does a finger picking acoustic blues tune, and closes the album out
with a Wes Montgomery type of jazz number. And lookin at his picture
seems like he's not much more than a kid.

I htink I paid $6 for the album. I love it when I get a recording and
like everything on it (which doesn't happen that much). But when
somebody comes along and also jumps to the top of my admiration list -
    oh happy, happy day.

    Sakman,

Welcome to the list of Eric Johnson afficianados in this conference.
You ought to pick up Tones, too. Just to take you up on one point:

>> with a Wes Montgomery type of jazz number. And lookin at his picture

He's actually about 35 (ish). Doesn't it just make you sick.... :^)
