1852.0. "Directory of Guitarist's Equipment" by NAVIER::STARR (My glance turns to a stare...) Tue Jun 05 1990 00:36

Although some of this info is spread all around the conference, I thought it
would be cool to have a sort of 'directory' of what some of the hot guitarists
use for equipment.

And since Musician magazine is kind enough to list what bands are using
nowadays, I went through my old issues and pulled out some info, which I will
post here. Feel free to add any more that you are sure of.....(btw, I'm using
the artist's name as the subject title to make looking-up easier for future
reference).

1852.40Steve Vai (from 1986)NAVIER::STARRWhen we made love, you used to cry...Wed Jun 13 1990 01:0627
Guitarist: Steve Vai (Frank Zappa, PIL, David Lee Roth, Whitesnake, solo, etc.)
           (from a 1986 interview after the first DLR album)

Guitars: Charvel Strat, Guild (one has 30 frets and recessed Floyd), Coral
         sitar, Guild 12-string, Fender 12-string, Ibanez

Whammy: His Floyd Roses are custom routed out underneath. There are six small
        grooves cut into the face of the gutiar so the fine tuners can sink into
        the body. Also there is a little routing at the back cavity so you can
        pull up more

Pickups: Three DiMarzio humbuckers, with the middle one stacked so it looks
         like a single-coil. And a five way switch:

		treble = treble pickup as a humbucker
		treble/middle = splits the treble and middle humbuckers to
                                each be single-coil (sounds like a Strat)
		middle = straight stacked humbucker
		middle/neck = splits the humbuckers again (another Strat tone)
		neck = single coil and humbucker together

1852.44how about these?SUBWAY::YATESFri Jul 06 1990 14:1019

    	This listing is great. Do you have any info on the following?

    	Mick Taylor - I know he used to use old Les Pauls
    	Keith Richards - there may not be enough disk space for this
    	Mike Bloomfield - Les Pauls?
    	Albert King - He used to use an old flying V. Now?

    	What type of Les Paul is Les Paul using these days? He's
    	here in NY every monday. I should really get over and see him
    	play.

    	I do remember seeing an old CHESS cover where Buddy Guy had
    	an OLD white 3 humbucking pickup SG.

    	thanks

1852.45Lonnie MackISLNDS::KELLYThu Jul 12 1990 09:2413
    I did a show with Lonnie Mack this past weekend...always fun to
    meet one of your guitar heroes (he put out 'Memphis' in about '62).
    He uses a Flying V (has two of the little beauties on stage) through
    a a Gallien-Krueger (sp?) combo amp driving two custom enclosures,
    each containing a 12in speaker. He also plays acoustic in part
    of the show.

    He headed up a four piece band (drums, bass, piano (CP70), and guitar).
    Refreshing to see a 'famous' musician who's still very hot and fresh,
    not someone who's trading on past glory.

    Regards,
    John K.
