| Are you talking about the big acoustic bass?

| I think what you're referring to is called the "guitaron". Its played
like a bass.
I'm only
aware of 4 string versions. But there could be some hybrid specially
crafted, firebreathing, riproaring, hotrod model with more strings, you
know how those boys get after drinking tequila and eating multiple
alarm chilli.

| I think I've seen it spelled "guitaronne", but who cares about spelling any
more? :^)
I don't remember a four-string version. Don't they usually have six?

| Ya, Guitaronne seems to ring a bell. Do they traditionally have
no frets? Essentially like an acoustic bass?

| I seem to remember reading about an instrument called a
BAJO-SEXTO (for real?!!!) and it loogs like a 1.5 x sized
dreadnought but I don't think it has four or six strings...
more like eight or ten. The strolling Mexican Bands seem to use
these a lot and they sound AWESOME!

| The bajo sexto is similar to a 12-string guitar tuned an octave lower.
I believe they are tuned E A D G C F, bottom to top. Some people
also use a bajo quinto, which has ten strings (the lowest two are
missing). One of the members of Los Lobos once described the bajo as
an "arthritic, contortionist instrument". They sound wonderful,
though.
I think guitarons are fretless.
