1830.0. "Help with Saddle Trimming" by KYOA::ELZAMS (Beam me up Scottie...) Mon May 21 1990 11:10

    Hi

Has anyone ever tried to trim the saddle of the guitar?

I'm trying to lower the action on my Yamaha Acoustic & I want to
cut that little plastic piece without breaking it in half. What tools
did you use? - Any suggestions appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Scott

Is it glued in? Some classical saddles can be trimmed with only a flat
file, you remove material from the bottom to retain the top shape...
    but don't go by me.

To trim the saddle, you can use sand paper.. or a file. (File will take longer
if you use a fine one, you CAN use a rough one, then smooth it out later. I
found sandpaper, all things considered, works best.

If you use sandpaper, get something to use a sanding block.

Best thing to do this is with a vise, put the saddle in the
vise, that will give you something solid to work with. Then etche or
draw a line that will be the new saddle hieght. Take off about 1/16 or 1/8
at a time till it gets to where you're liking it. Draw the line straight...

And yes,, do all your work on the bottom of the saddle.

Take your time, and make sure you evenly shave it down. It must not only
be flat, but uniform.

Another piece of advice.. if you're doing this yourself, it may be a good
idea to get a spare saddle... you never know...

(Btw.. this is done by most guitar setup guys for about 5 dollars...)

But, I put mine (the saddle) in a vise-grip plier at hold it to the
side of my grinding wheel... Heck, I don't even have time to SAY
"light beer" let alone drink any! <grin> Needless to say, I keep extra
    saddle material around..
