Did anyone happen to catch Ernie Isley at nightstage last night? WBCN broadcast it live. I listened for about 45 minutes. His singing was a bit flat in places, (maybe he had trouble hearing?) and the songs weren't the most memorable I've ever heard, but man can that guy WAIL on guitar. Every song I heard had an extended break. He reminded me of a cross between Hendrix and Clapton, only faster. His music was bluesy funk with hard-edged guitar all over the place. Good stuff.

Where you been, son? Ernie's been ripping up fretboards for years with the Isley Bros. In fact, on his first LP with them, back around 1972 he covered both Neil Young ("Ohio") and Jimi ("Machine Gun") in the same song! He's also a kick-butt drummer... I hear that recently he's taken to playing both right and *left* handed!!!! Brian | |||||

That must have been when I was stuck in my room for 4 years practicing classical guitar. But, I do remember the Isley bros., but not Ernie wailing away like that. There was a guitar player article about him recently and he did say he was playing left and right handed. I wonder if he does it live. Bob |
