1743.0. "Bashing Anyone?" by VAXWRK::SAKELARIS () Fri Mar 23 1990 11:38

Maybe this has been done before, with 17 hundred and change notes in
this conference I know I haven't seen 'em all, so if this isn't
appropriate Mr. Moderator - feel free to move it.

I was wondering if any of you out there have had some bad experiences
with equipment or instruments. Something that you would warn others
against. Or maybe it just didn't suit you as you had hoped it would.

I have written in 1732.4 (I think it was) that I owned a PV Foundation
that didn't cut it for me. I didn't, and of course couldn't, have
known it when I bought it, it sounded fine in the store. They say you
never know what you got till its gone. Well this bass was for me like a
woman, you never know what you got till she moves in with you.

Other stuff I've owned but would never again:

Mosrite guitar, Ventures Model - I say BS about this being a collectors
item now. Mine was a total disappointment. Not necessarily the guitars
fault, it held its tune and all. I was just a young rocker trying to
find out how to get the English Blues sound and the Mosrite certainly
wasn't it. And if I were interested in collectors item guitars, I still
wouldn't want the Mosrite sound. And I especially hated the action,
which was supposedly what they were noted for. I ended up trading it
and like a week later, the music store burned down destroying
everything in it. A fitting end I thought.

Then there was my Kustom amp. Tough amp, just poor transistor sound.
Try to get some sustain out of that? No way, it'd squeal and howl like a
stuck pig. I liked the looks though. They always looked new, no matter
how many times they were just flung into the back of the van.

One other disappointment for me was a Les Paul Custom I had about 15
yrs ago. It was the "Fretless Wonder" I think they called it, even
though it was fretted. It sounded really good, no problem there. The
frets were too fine though and not suited for me. I just didn't like
    the feel.

    How about you all?

I wouldn't by another Les Paul because, although they sound great and
are really superior axe 'workmanshipwise', it was just too damned
heavy for me to carry on a three hour gig. I suppose I may have
gotten used to it, but instead ended up selling it after only a
    month.

I try not to bash stuff (especially in writing), because I'm the
type of idiot who will end up owning something I bashed a week before.

I've owned two strats, and two gibsons... I'll probably own more someday,
even though I got rid of all four cuz I couldn't stand something about
each one. Am I wierd or what ???

Now Cindi thinks I'm a little of both... ;)

Is there some sort of aberrant indecisiveness associated with being a
    musician, or what?

It just takes longer for musicians to figure out what they want...at *MY*
age, I don't have the energy to worry about deciding which toy or axe
to convince myself that I "need", so I'll just play my Les Paul.....

Anyone know where I can pick up a strat.....cheap? ACK! I thought I
    was cured!!!!

I had a late 70's Tele. I loved the neck, but that damned front pickup
was microphonic. tinny!. I went to a SG ...liked it, then to a right handed
strat (I'm left handed) , i liked it but it was too thin sounding for
me, got a bargain Ibanez Roadstar to play out cause i didnt want to
worry about the guitar, it got the job done.
Now i just own an ovation (no pickupts). Very happy with it.
That was 10+ years ago. i *like* the sound of Tele's and strats now.

It's all junk. I get home twitching to play. I get childish and
emotional when my wife complains and asks me to put it down.
I'm still on my first guitar - it's been 9 months now so the itch
for the next one is just starting. God help us wretched souls.

Nothing I've owned recently costing over $100 was bashable. I
think we're in a golden age here. The competition for the
musician's dollar is going feirce on 3 continents and there are
a vast number of choices in the marketplace. Where did I learn
to talk like this I feel like a newsreel narration.....

My first electric was(7 years ago) was Sears Special; $99.95!
    Whatabaaagin!  Wrong!  I ended up trading it in on my Roadstar 440;
best move I ever made except I wish I had the junker so I can trash it
on stage. "Wow, dude! You should have seen this guy trash his guitar
on stage last night. Narley, man! Totally spherical!"

I think the rockman stuff is great for home and studio. I have the
rockman "Sustainor" and it sound great at home. WHen I put it through
my AMP, however, it kills the sound something wicked. Got to watch out
    for overprocessing.

One BIG complaint I have is that nowadays is that these "Quality"
instruments are costing an arm and a leg! Is there such demand for
guitars these days that shoots the prices so high? I remember
twitching just looking at "quality" guitars marked at $400! Now,
you're lucky if you get some sappy Korean made (shut up Greg), 2nd
    rate guitars for that price!

I've seen some Ibanez EX line that are just atrocious in quality and
running $350-$450! For that price, you can build one better!
Hmm, my home made is still Korean made! How do you figure? 8[
