1724.0. "Advice needed on Les Paul "Special"" by BUSY::JMINVILLE (rockin' through the wilderness) Mon Mar 19 1990 08:55

A funny thing happened on my quest for a Telecaster...

I bumped into something called a Gibson Les Paul Special. It's
a very plain L.P.-shaped guitar without a carved top. Instead
of the usual humbuckers it has copies of the original soapbar
pickups. Comes in two colors (that I know of) burgundy red
and a two-color sunburst (really disgusting looking to my eyes).

Anyway, this thing played really nicely. A great blues guitar
and one which I think would be perfect for a rhythm player like
    	little ol' moi.

Now, there have been many times in the past that I've strayed
from my original quest and this time I have been doing quite
well sticking with the goal of a maple necked Tele. In fact
my long-range plan is to buy a Tele this year and either an
LP or a 335 next year. My question to you guitar noters is
this: Should I bag the Tele idea and grab this reissue LP Special?

Will it hold its value or is it just another Gibson ploy to
come up with a ~$500 guitar?

    	joe.

Which axe you buy first is up to you Joe, but the quest for a LP and a
Tele (or strat) is (IMHO) a great idea. I currently have a LP Deluxe
which I recieved in trade for a strat, and I still would like to add a
strat to my one guitar collection. Go for it, grab the best deal first
whether it's the Fender or the Gibson.

Now for the "special". I personally like those "soap bar" jobs. I had
an old SG with P-100's on it....it was called an SG special. What a
warm tone! It's all personal taste, dude, so go with what ya like.

    Good luck,

    Steve D.

Funny you should mention that you were looking for a Tele; my
impression of the Gibson LP Special was exactly that, a Gibson version
of a Tele. Flat slab body, dual single-coils, a real no-nonsense
guitar. And just like a Tele, there's something solid and comfortable
about them. Specials were first introduced in the mid-fifties ('55 I
think) as a big brother to the single pickup LP Junior; like the
Junior, they changed briefly to a double cutaway design before being
discontinued in the early sixties. They've been re-issued a couple
of times since. The single coil soapbars have a unique sound, a bit
more midrangey than Fenders. Many players swear by them. I think
the LP Special is a great guitar and just may satisfy your Tele itch.

Just as a point of interest, I was watching one of the many re-runs
of the movie Woodstock last summer and noticed for the first time
that Carlos Santana was using an SG with Gibson P-90's on Soul
Sacrifice. They (and he) sounded great.
