lines for a while....especially after hearing R.Coccoli's
fine recordings of "FEAR" and "MY SECRET LIFE"!!!!!!!!!!
I have no doubt in my mind ; he is MR.MIDI-or possibly

able to contribute due to the fact I don't really have access
to recording gear.....but we'll take that as it comes.

1665.5 | Commusic Tapes | AQUA::ROST | Everyone loves those dead presidents | Wed Jan 31 1990 15:15 | 31 |
|
The COMMUSIC Tapes have no restrictions on originals vs. covers and
individual vs. band stuff. In fact all of the above have been
submitted over the years (currently they are preparing to release Commusic
VII). The recording quality has varied from straight to a stereo
cassette to full blown 8-track studio productions.
It would seem that a similar format would work well here. BTW, the
Commusic tapes are not necessarily all MIDI keyboard blowouts, a number
of the submissions have been guitar based. I just submitted a piece
for CM VII that is all acoustic guitar.
One noter volunteers to compile the tape. Noters submit tapes (usually
cassettes, though some compilers of CM have been able to take various
open reel and hi-fi VCR formats) and the compiler prepares a master
tape. The real hassle is making the copies once the master has been
completed, as anyone who has had to make lots of copies has found out.
To date, the noters have resisted going to a tape duplicator to have a
short run made. Total distribution of any one tape is going to be well
under 50 pieces.
Submissions are usually first come, first serve, until 90 minutes of
stuff has been submitted. Commusic has an informal 10-12 minute limit
on submissions.
BTW, COMMUSIC is a good file to visit for tips on home recording and MIDI
stuff if you're looking for info. Hit KP7 to add it to your notebook.

That sounds like a great idea!!! Brians comments from commusic
make sense too. I know that I've seen some GREAT playing at the
many SeasonJams and parties. And from all the different tastes
and styles out here in Guitarnotes, I'm sure it would be one
interesting tape!!
My only suggestion would be to go with a "more the merrier"
strategy and limit by time. 90 minute tape / 5 minutes = 18
different guitarists...

|
1665.11 | Ok, lets do it! | CSC32::G_HOUSE | It's just a jump to the left... | Thu Feb 01 1990 12:50 | 70 |
| Ok, from the responses here and the ones I've received in Mail, I'm
convinced that there is enough interest here to make it worthwhile to
give this project a go.
I'll volunteer to compile the master tape and make some of the copies
and will probably solicit assistance on the copies from those of you
that have volunteered to help with this.
You can submit your enties on either cassette or hifi VHS. The
cassette decks will accept either Dolby B or C. I'll try to keep the
quality as high as possible and the noise levels to minimum, but I'm
not going to go totally overboard in that dept. Personally I feel that
the effort that seems to go into the COMMUSIC compliations has become
rather anal retentive with regard to recording quality (no offense
intended to anyone involved). I have reasonable, but not top of the
line, equipment which is well maintained to do the compilations and
copies with. I have no intention of upgrading my equipment simply to
support this particular project.
If you're desperate to send me a 4-track cassette tape instead of a
stereo cassette, I can use it, but be aware that my 4-track is among
the lowest quality available (and does not have a compatible noise
reduction system) so I won't be responsible for any added noise. While
I'll try and accomodate your wishes as much as possible in this
scenerio, the bottom line is that I'm going to have mix it to *my*
tastes where the instructions lack and this may differ from yours. So
doing your own mixdown is recommended (unless you trust me more then
I'd expect you to).
I am not terribly concerned with the content or the recording quality
of the submissions. Naturally I advise you to use the best means of
recording you have available to you and send me a first generation tape
if possible, but all submissions will be accepted and I'll do my best
with them.
I'm also not concerned about whether you want to submit original songs
or covers, solo or band material, it's up to you. The intent here is
to get some music that you're proud of distributed to other people that
want to hear it, so whatever you want people to hear from you is what
you want to submit.
Send you submissions to:
Greg House
P.O. Box 5995
Woodland Park, Co 80866-5995
If you want your submission tape back, please include a self-addressed
package and postage. If I don't hear anything from you, I'll keep your
tape. When you send your submission, please let me know via VMSmail at
CSC32::G_HOUSE and include any release/performance notes which you'd
like included. On the COMMUSIC tapes, these typically include the name
of the song(s), who performed on them, and equipment used when they
were recorded.
Please be courteous to the other people that want to get their music on
the tape too and don't submit half hour long compostions or a whole
demo worth of material. I think that 1-2 songs lasting about 5-10
minutes at most would seem appropriate.
When I've received enough material to fill a tape then I'll begin with
the compliation and distribution. Watch for announcements in this
note.
I'm personally very excited about this and am looking forward to
getting some interesting material out! So get the tapes rolling and
GO FOR IT!

.
RnR is in need of a demo tape... We've been thinking about going
to a outside studio (as opposed to the basement) to do soem 4 or 8
track stuff...
What is the going rate (I know they must vary) for 4, 8 and 16 track
studios ? Do the hourly fees include an engineer/producer type ?
Does it include the final mix ?
We were thinking two originals and two covers would be a good demo,
but we don't wanna spend all outdoors to do it...
Suggestions ??
jc
|
1665.41 | Rough Rough Rough | MRVAX::ALECLAIRE | | Fri Mar 09 1990 09:25 | 21 |
| The way studios work around here, at least for responses to what I
need , is there is an hourly rate that includes an engineer.
Producers are totally seperate, $$$, and often have thier own engineers
and/or studio preferences.
The rate around here runs 20-75/an hour, depending on the place.
More expensive places I find at least look worth it, it's a total
bummer to try and dsave a few bucks and end up sounding not much better
than the cellar, but you gotta find a place that's right for yourself.
Tape is a big expense, DAT tape for Digital stereo runs like 20$,
but for analog multitrack it's 50-150, depending on how many tracks you
want. Mixdown time is the same as the hourly rate.
I've been to cheep studios before and was most unhappy, felt like
a sing-along-booth. Next time I'll pay the bucks for to have
the right mikes for the jobs and a mixing board made for pro-use.
You should really call studios and nose around.
I dude I know put a demo of 2 songs together for 2K$, he made some
money. A bad demo can sink you into the land of never-forgotton bad.
|
1665.42 | | MRVAX::ALECLAIRE | | Fri Mar 09 1990 09:27 | 3 |
| BTW for 24 track. 125$ tape the playing time runs 15 minutes.
If you're never wanting to remix, you could use the tape once,
after the mix.
|
1665.43 | Take Your Time | AQUA::ROST | Bikini Girls With Machine Guns | Fri Mar 09 1990 10:24 | 18 |
|
For a first demo, 8 tracks is plenty to start with, 16 fun if you have
$$.
Get the studio to give you a cassette with examples of projects they've
done which are the *same style* of music as what you do. That'll tell
you if they can deliver the sound you want.
Remember the time you pay for includes you setting up, the *engineer*
setting up, you sitting around shooting the breeze, using the john,
etc. Figure about 12 hours for two tunes, doing all the tracks,
overdubs, mixing, etc. if you want a real good job. Split the
sessions up: backing tracks one night, then the overdubs, then the
vocals, then the mixdown. The less time you spend, the funkier it'll
sound. An extra couple of hours may make all the difference in how
good the tape sounds.

| Ok, here's a progress report on the compilation. I currently have submissions
from the following people:
Rich Coccoli
Steve Greve
Bob Conroy
Jerry White & Jeff Cooper
Kevin McDonough
Brian Rost
I've also been promised entries by Bill Buckley and Tom DesRochers, which
I understand are currently in transit.
I hope I didn't miss any, I think these are all the tapes I have. If you
sent me something and you're not on the list, please contact me offline.
I haven't timed them yet, so I don't know the exact duration, but my "seat
of the pants" feel is that there is about 35-40 minutes of material on the
ones I have (don't know about the ones in transit yet).
Thank you to all those participating!

Well, since it's been virtually 3 months since this note was
started by Greg, how about putting in a deadline for entries?
If it's not a complete 90 minutes or it's a 60 minute cassette,
so what? Otherwise, it may be summer before this is out.
Now, I admit that mine is just in so I'm late too. But, other
than mine and Bucks and the last reply by dbII, the submittals
seem to be close to the end.
So how about a deadline? The end of next week??

Hey Bill,
Sure I'm getting itchy - this may be the best thing to come out of
this conference, ya know? I guess I've assumed that the past 3 months
have been when people have gotten it together. I've kept in touch with
Greg via mail to make sure there was still room because I had plans to
record mine. I had a "back-up" to submit if the tape was filling up.
Several notes back, someone posted something about all the talk and no
action in here. I'd say we all have something on tape - send it in!!
Maybe the end of next week is too early, but I sure hope the deadline
isn't far out. Plus, a deadline will get some butts in gear, right?

| I've been thinking about Toms idea of a deadline. My original intention was to
just wait until there was enough material to fill a tape (of some indetermined
length), then "publish" that one and start collecting entries for a second one.
I kind of didn't like the idea of a deadline because then you have blank space
on the tape that someone could have used, but I can see your point about
motivation.
I'm open to ideas. I still need to time the current submissions, but with the
ones from Tom, Buck, and Larry we'll probably be close to 60 minutes.
Do you want to to put out a 60 minute tape, or wait another month or so and
try for a 90? I'm open to ideas, but I will say that I'm still receiving
peoples tapes on a fairly regular basis. There seemed like a big time lag
from the first couple I got (from Rich and Steve, thanks guys) and the next
batch, but there seems to be a lot coming in right now.

Go for 60 minutes, call it volume 1. As more material comes in,
work on assembling volume 2, repeating ad infinitum. Try to get the
broadest mix of players for volume 1; from any tape with more than one
tune, pick one for volume 1, save the rest for subsequent volumes.
JMHO.
Yo, Greve! Good show, dude. Looking forward to hearing your

Greg,
First off, it's your baby so you should do what you think is right.
If it were me, I'd ask if there are any entries that are on the
verge of being submitted. If so, wait for 'em. But it doesn't
seem to make sense to wait just in case something might come in.
The Volume 1 and 2 idea sounds good to me.

Looks like I underestimated the amount of material I'd received a little.
I currently have 7 submissions totalling 56:56 minutes (wierd, huh?). With

Terrific, Greg!!! Can't wait to hear it!! Ok, here comes another
IMHO...
Unless it's impractical, maybe have those who submitted 2 or more
songs cut their entry to one so we each have a song on the tape?
First come first serve is great and they actually deserve to be
on it first. But it would be nice if they picked their favorite
tune and bumped the extras to Volume 2.
Hopefully we'll get a Volume 2 but it would be great for everyone
to have the opportunity to be on Volume 1. Any gracious guitarists
out there?
Looking forward to hearing all you noters. I've already heard a few

| If it's ok with everyone, I'd like to keep the tapes intact rather then
splitting the ones with multiple songs for Volume 2. If for no other
reason, it's a lot easier on me [8^)].
I know what you're trying to do, get as many different people on there as
possible, but my thinking was that some of the ones with multiple songs
had them to specifically show different aspects of their playing and
songwriting and they were intentionally juxtiposed. I'd hate to change
that. Also, if we split them up, then we'll just put out a bunch of tapes
with different songs by the same people on them. I think it might be
better to have different tapes that have funtimentally different people
on them.
But this is JMO, so if you guys want to do something different, that's ok
with me. I don't have a submission on this one (maybe for Volume 2) so
this is your tape and I'll respect whatever you wish for it.

Re: Liner Note Topic:
I thought it might be easier on Greg, and more fun for the rest
of us contributors to enter our own liner notes. Perhaps we should
have put it to a vote. It also might be a good idea to write lock it
once it's complete. Some people have a habit of filling up topics
with useless (imho) notes, eh?. =8^]
I got rid of the Review + Survey topics. You are right, it's too
early. I'm just eager, I guess.

our last performance at Shooters, and I heard some of the Blues
jammin' on it that really shows off Bulldawgs style, like on Stormy

which shows that metal heads can play blues too, I think ;)
When I get copies of the tapes I'll see what I can come up with.

| Hi everyone.
I made some time this weekend and finished dubbing the submissions to the
master for GUITARnotes Volume I. It ended up fitting rather well, with less
then 1 minute of dead space at the end of side 1 and about 2.25 minutes of
dead space at the end of side 2. Given that this is a 90 minute tape and I
didn't make any effort to order the submissions so that they would fit most
optimally, I thought this worked out pretty well.
Now I just have to make two additional copies of the master to send to Mike
Heiser and Steve Greve who will be assisting in the duplication efforts. I
will hopefully be able to do that this week, however I'm out of town next week
and have a LOT of work and things at home to do to prepare for that. I'll keep
you posted.
I'll post the sequence of the songs in the "release notes" sometime soon.
I put the submissions on the tape in the sequence that I received them, except
for Tom DesRochers' which I dubbed first (a few weeks back) because he needed
his tape back quickly.
There are two submissions that there was not enough room for on Volume I, so
these will be the start for Volume II, those from Dave Bottom and RJ Pelletier
(sorry if that spelling's wrong RJ). Please go ahead and start sending your
submissions for Volume II and I'll put it together as soon as there is enough
material.

| If I remember right, in COMMUSIC they just list the people doing the
copies home addresses and locations and you either send them a tape to
put it on and return postage, or money for a tape, or hand them a tape
to replace the one they hand you.
I'd be opposed to having a note for orders. I think sending requests
to us directly would probably be better. We do need to shop for bulk
tapes and then based on the price we get put up a price for copies that
will include that and postage.

| Yes, the tape's ready. The distribution points will be Mike Heiser,
Steve Greve and myself.
The relative quality of our tape duplication equipment is:
1) Mike
2) Greg
3) Steve
However, the relative speed of getting a copy done and sent to you
probably puts Steve on top. So bear that in mind as you choose who to
contact for your copy.
At this point Mike still has the master and Steve and I don't have ours
yet. We'll have to get tapes to copy onto before we can determine how
much the final product will cost and it may vary a little between us.
We'll let you know...
Also if you want me to tape your copy over your submission tape, just

| I don't think the organizers of this should supply ANYTHING but their
time and use of their equipment.
When I was doing the COMMUSIC tapes I basically offered two simple
"options" in order to not have to negotiate a specific method with
each person that wanted the tape:
I went out and bought either TDK SA's or Maxell UDXL-II for about
$2 each in packs of 10. I bought cassette mailing envelopes for
about 75 cents apiece and postage was another 85 cents.
So the two options were:
1) You sent me inter-office mail saying you wanted a tape. I made it
and brought it two the office. You gave me $2 for the tape, I
gave you the tape.
2) You sent me a check for like $3.50 and I mailed you the tape via
outside mail.
I do not recommend using Inter-office mail. I know for a fact that
sometimes it is screened.
We never really had a good solution for foeign distribution. You get
into problems with currency exchange, varying mailing costs, etc.
Usually some nice eurpopean soul stepped forward and volunteered to
be the Euro-distributor and that's as much as I knew.
I would STRONGLY recommend doing it this way. I don't want to go into
it, but you want to keep it simple and have everyone do it the same
way or it gets to be a pain, even if only a minor pain.
$3.50 ain't that much and you can always reuse the tape.
BTW, if you send me the liner notes, I can make a postscript file
that prints out a standard cassette box insert with nice fonts and
such.

Maybe that's why Steve Greve sold his Mustang! I'll see if I can make
Slash an offer he can't refuse. He won't have to worry about tuning
it! ;-)

Mike.. puleeese don't sell that Mustang.... (At least if you do,

I'm betting that someone's dog ate the tape and they don't want to

lyrics? The tape was so "hot" it set someone's deck on fire?
Gotta be a reason.

| I can send the tape to whoever wants to take on a third of the duplication
chores. A chip is on order for my Nakamichi deck from their factory.
They said it would be ready for this weekend, but who knows.
The problem lies in the quality of the recording. Everyone is going to
end up with a 4th generation copy, no matter how you slice it. On
lesser equipment, the quality will deteriorate REAL fast with multiple
generations.
We still need to discuss/setup the cost for each tape and volume 2
probably needs more submissions. This would buy some time while we
wait. You folks decide. I don't like this anymore than you, I've been
without the deck for a month!

Regarding all these suggestions about what the theme or content of
the next tape should be like.
Geez!!! You guys are alredy beginning to sound like a record company!
It should have WHATEVER people want to submit. I don't think there
should be any constraints or suggestions as to what it should be.
My guess is that if you even suggested that a particular guideline,
you probably wouldn't get enough submissions.

% DIGITAL INTERNAL USE ONLY
%
% INTRODUCTION:
% This rendition of the Digital logo was prepared by Ned Batchelder using
% Adobe Illustrator and hand manipulation of the resulting PostScript code.
% Photographic masters of the logo were obtained from David Comberg in the
% Graphic Design Group. Additional consultation was provided by Elliot
% Hendrickson, one of the original designers of the logo.
%
% USE:
% This file defines a new PostScript font, called /DigitalLogo. It consists
% of three characters. (d) is the entire Digital logo, (t) is a small
% trademark symbol, and (T) is a large trademark symbol. The font is designed
% so that the argument to scalefont is the height of the logo. There is no
% extra white space around the logo at all. The trademarks are designed to be
% shown right after the logo, and they align themselves. The only correct
% strings to show with this font are (d), (dt), and (dT). There is an entry
% (named GapWidth) in the font dictionary which gives the unscaled width of
% the gap between the blocks. This distance is given because it is used as a
% unit to determine how much space to leave around the logo.
%
% HISTORY:
% The logo was designed in 1957 by Elliot Hendrickson, who was then working
% as an independent designer. He was contracted by DEC to do a brochure, and
% DEC wanted a logo to accompany it. The logo up to then had been the letters
% DEC in blocks the shape of the plug-in cards that DEC had been producing.
% Elliot re-worked the logo, incorporating letters which were hand-drawn for
% the purpose by Arthur Hover(?). The logo has been maintained since then in
% conventional technology, ie, film masters. There was at least one reworking
% of the logo at some point.
%
% The masters I received had a number of interesting features. The boxes were
% not all the same width, and there seemed to be no logic to which boxes were
% wider. The 'g' was the narrowest, and the 'i' and 'l' were second widest.
% Also, the two 'i's were not exactly the same shape. On ten-inch masters,
% (one box to an 8x11 sheet), the boxes were not rectangles, but were very
% slightly tapered in wierd ways. I assume that the tapering is the result of
% too many reproductions, but the difference in widths may have been
% deliberate at some time. Elliot reports that when he drew it, all boxes
% were the same width. I have retained the different widths in my version,
% since the experts I had at hand did not seem to think I should make them
% uniform.
%
% Please feel free to use this logo, but keep in mind the following:
%
% 1. This code is for INTERNAL USE ONLY.
% 2. I am not entirely happy with the final shapes of the letters, and am
% hoping to improve them. Please allow for future updates to this code.
% 3. Only use this logo within the guidelines of the Corporate Identity
% program. If you use this font precisely as is, you can't get in much
% trouble. Don't take the shapes and do strange things with them.
% In particular, the Identity states that the logo is a one-color logo: The
% letters are actually holes in the blocks, through which the background can
% be seen. Do not modify this code so that the letters are always white.

As an update...
Within a day or two, I will have completed 15 copies of the tape, which
is all I really have time to do. I'll be forwarding the master to Steve
Greve and a submaster to Greg so that they can do some copies, too.
If you've already sent me mail, I'll be sending out the remaining
copies this week. If I haven't already heard from you, best check with
Greg or Steve.

I have something I want to submit to the next tape, but you've got to
promise me that you won't tweak it in any way. I don't know how other
people feel, but I don't want someone adjusting the EQ or adding
reverb.
I don't know how others feel, but I think you shouldn't be doing that

| Yo DB,
Can't speak for Greg, but I think the only thing he "colorized"
was a left-side-only submission, which he made into left/right
with some stereo reverb from his SGE. Correct me if I'm wrong
here, but I don't thing he changed any EQ, he just made a
recording more "useable".

1665.250 | | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Brouhaha | Thu Oct 11 1990 15:22 | 28 |
| Regarding adding reverb to Bobs piece, I believe he and I had discussed
that a long time ago when he told me he was sending me a 1 track
recording done on a 4-track machine. I suggested making it stereo by
adding a little reverb with a good quality effects unit and (I thought)
he agreed to that.
If my memory has failed me or I remembered something incorrectly, then
my deepest apologys to you Bob and I'll resubmit your piece for the
next tape without any modifications. If it's really a big issue, I
would even be willing to redo the master and send it around again.
As far as EQ went, I did not use an equilizer to make any adjustments
to the sound. As I said before, NOBODY TOLD ME WHAT BIAS OR TAPE EQ
SETTINGS THEY USED ON THE TAPES THEY SENT ME (except Brian, and maybe
Rich). If people had marked their tapes or told me how it was
recorded, I would have respected that as I did with Brians submission.
Since I wasn't told how it was done, I experimented with them until I
decide how *I* thought it sounded best. Quite honestly, this
guesstimation took quite a lot of time on my part and I would have
preferred not to have had to do it.
Dave, I would never think of doing anything to alter your work.
I'm starting to get kind of tired of all the flack people seem to be
giving me about how long it took me and what I did to "screw up"
peoples work. Maybe someone else should do Volume 2...

1665.251 | what a hassle | MILKWY::JACQUES | Yes, you do need a Boogie | Thu Oct 11 1990 15:35 | 19 |
| Greg,
Welcome to the club. I recorded "Falljam" and "Springjam" a couple
of years ago. That in itself was a major chore. Making tape copies
for everyone was an even bigger chore. Most of the people I made
tapes for were very cooperative and appreciative, but there were a
few that acted like a owed it to them. I had some people criticizing
the way I did the recording/mixdown, and other people that wanted
multiple copies (like 10 copies of their sets). Some people bitched
because I wouldn't give them the masters.
I stated quite clearly up front that I was making all copies on Maxell
UDXLII C90 and expected people to provide me with a brand new blank
tape to replace the one I gave them. I had people sending me used tape,
tape with no jewel box, cheap Recitron cassettes, etc. I made copies
for some people that never even bothered to pick them up.
Never again !!

Since it was my submission that was "colorized" I have a few
comments. I recorded the pieces mono into one track as Greg
said, one guitar, one mike, one track, nothing in between.
I don't remember exactly what we discussed about it, but
what Greg did is commonly done with classical guitar
recordings and I have no objection to it, as long as
the reverb was subtle. I'm certainly not going to
complain without hearing the tape, and if I did I'd
probably comment to Greg off-line.
Probably most of us think this is a good idea, but also
probably few of us would be willing to volunteer the time
to make it happen; so let's give Greg some thank-you's
rather than flack.

| Greg,
How can I convince you that it was NOT my intention to give you "flack"
about this?
> Regarding adding reverb to Bobs piece, I believe he and I had discussed
> that a long time ago
From your original note, I think I was quite justified in presuming
that you had decided on your own to add reverb without asking.
Consider what you wrote:
> That's Bob Conroy (slightly enhanced with stereo reverb from a one
> track master courtesy of myself and ART, I hope Bob doesn't mind my
> addition)
If you accept that I had been given a reasonable impression that you
had decided to "colorize" on your own, how might I voice my concern
over this not being done to my submissions without having you feel
I'm giving you "flack".
Is it reasonable for me to express that, or should I have just clammed
up and not submitted my pieces?
Look, I generated the masters for three COMMUSIC tapes and did
distribution for all seven. My records show I've made over 250 copies
of COMMUSIC tapes!
I know that it's easy to take comments on the process personally but
you have to presume that people have the best motives for offering
those comments because, in my experience, they usually do.
I don't think there's anyone in here who isn't greatful for what you've
done, and I think I can safely state that NO ONE knows how much it
involved more than me.
OK? Peace?
db

1665.256 | Peace | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Brouhaha | Fri Oct 12 1990 15:13 | 20 |
| Ok, Dave, I accept that. I suppose it did sound like I spontaneously
added reverb to Bob's submission from what I said before. What I ment
was he hadn't heard exactly what I did yet, so I hoped he liked the
outcome. At this point I've gotten rather confused and I can't really
remember if Bob and I discussed this before I did that or not. At the
time I did it, I honestly believed we had. We've discussed it now
though.
I did admit to spontaneously having to guess what people used for tape
EQ (biasing) and noise reduction though. It was never my intent to
alter the sound of any of the submissions, just to try and find the
settings they used.
I guess I'm just a little sensative about this from some of the
previous comments (on and off line). I will be happy when the tape
gets out and things quiet down and we can get on with the next one
(whether I put it together or someone else does).
Sorry.

I have something that I'd like to submit for the next tape and I've
worked hard at getting the tone just right. Would you be willing to let
me know if you feel it needs any "coloring"??..... before you actually
DO the "coloring"??
>I don't know how other

The EQ on this piece is especially important to me, and adjustments in
reverb would be something I wouldn't want, unless we talked.

I realize that I'm asking you to take special care with my music,

Your pal, Grevemeister
Dave, I really do hope this is helpful. I think the answer to your
question lies in your excellent writing abilities.. no, no, wait for a
minute and listen...
I've read you in other notes and your writing is so expressive that
I sometimes add tones, and modes to your notes (In my head) and later
find out (by reading further) that the tone I felt didn't apply at all.
The tone I felt when I read your note to Greg, was one of
abruptness.. and my hunch is (based on the long helpful notes you've
been willing to prepare for me, when I asked music questions in the
past) that you didn't intend that at all, and that you value highly
Greg's willingness to do this work for our group.
Regards,
Steve

reduction before doing anything. If the piece still sounds like it
has problems, I would contact the person and suggest things you can
do to correct it.
In fact, I did exactly this with one Commusic submission. Someone was
in a hurry to get the tape to me, and ended up having to do the final
mix late at night. In order not to keep his family up he ended up
mixing on headphones.
Anyway, my main concern was what APPEARED to the "unsolicited reverb"

Just back from vacation, so time to check in.
Let's see...sounds like you got the submaster, Steve. How about you,
Greg? I sent the master your way before I left.
It took the Nashua, NH PO 3 weeks to get Buck's tape to Mass. I should
have sent it by pigeon. Tom D, did your second tape arrive? If so,
could you pass it along to some other noter? 'tanks.
Tom G, I'll put your tape in the mail this week. I found your $$ mail

So far I have recieved submissions from the following people:
Dave Bottom (2 Tunes)
Andrew Leclaire (2 Tunes)
Roger Pelletier (2 Tunes)
Alan Starr and *me* (3 tunes)
All in all it's about ~35 or 40 minutes, so we have *plenty* of
tape left.
I'm also now in the process of deciding how to distribute Vol II.
The most uncomplicated way is to do all of the dups myself, but that
could get very time consuming, but at least if it gets messed up we
know who is to blame! ;-)
If anyone has any good ideas on distribution method, please let
me know, else I'll plan on doing it all myself.
Lastly, I need a volunteer to make the label. Mike H., are you
listening? :-)

As you all know I'm asking for Vol 2 submissions to be in my
hand my the 20th of this month. Could every one who's planning
on sending submissions for this tape please contact me so I
get an idea of what's coming?

Deadlines are for work - not for GUITAR-NOTES tapes. What's the point?
I think it would be crazy to go through all the duping and maliing
and such for anything less than a full tape.
What can I say? My experience with the COMMUSIC tapes leads me to
make a strong pitch to keep this thing simple and informal. No
suggested "themes" for a particular tape, no deadlines, etc.
YOu just keep piling things up and when you have enough do a release.
BTW, I'm planning on sending you two songs - should be about 8-10 minutes
worth of stuff.

re: .300
Dave, the point is that with the Holidays coming up, I
won't have time to deal with it. I also thought it would be
nice to have something around Christmas time. Who knows maybe
someone'll come up with a Holiday song or two..
The deadline is also to motivate folks to submit. Vol I
was delayed, in part, by sluggish initial submissions. After
Greg set the deadline, things picked up. I chose to avoid this
problem upfront.
Since there seems to be somewhat of a consensus (both here
and via mail), I'll hold off until I get *at least* 60 minutes
of toons. I'd like 90. I'd *still* like to get them by the
20th however, since It's a volunteer effort and I'll have the
time then, but not later.

He's not talking about you...
My experience is that it takes about a week to get a letter/package
from someone in the New England area to me here in Colorado. I've
never gotten *anything* in DEC internal mail that took less then three
weeks. Both of the two tapes I've gotten internal mail have had the
cases cracked on them and I know of at least three people that have
sent tapes via internal mail that never arrived.
I realize that this is limited experience, but it's enough to make me
question the reliability of this transport.
Besides that, it's against the corporate guidelines to send personal
material through internal mail.

if you needed to. I'd like to hear 90, but 60 would do in a pinch.

I'm going to shoot for a C90. Dave Blickstein has comitted to
a submission of a coupla tunes, so that will bring us over the
60 minute mark.
FWIW, does it *have* to be DEC folks only? The reason I ask
is that the *other* guitar player in my band (*not* Alan) has
some originals he might like to submit. FWIW, I haven't mentioned
it to him..

| FWIW, I also have two submissions coming.
RE: Who submits. I think it should be DEC people...I mean, the novelty
of this tape (for me) is hearing the voice behind the notes I read. I
mean, this dude (non-deccie) may be a fabulous player with great tunes,
but I don't know him from a hole in the wall, so I probably would be
less interested in the submission.
FWIW...

Ok, folks. In order to wrap this up, I'd like to have all
submissions to me no later than January 11. This will give me
time to finish up the master and start duplicating.
If possible, could folks who want a copy of Vol II,
please send me mail, so I can get a rough count of how
many tapes/padded bags will be needed. This will help
me figure out what the cost per tape will be. Right now
it'll be around $3 including postage. It could be less,
could be a little more.
Those who want their original submissions returned, let
me know. If you want me to tape over your submission tape
with a copy of the finished master, also let me know.
Brian R.-> I'll let you know if I need help making tapes. It'll
depend on the demand.
I *have* to get this done and distributed by the end of January.
Let's get those submissions in..

| Tom, FWIW, I would also vote to limit the submissions on the tape to
only Deccies. As Buck stated, my interest in the tape is to hear what
the people I talk to sound like.
This is especially interesting to me, since most of you don't live in
close proximity to me and the chances I'd ever get to go see you play,
even if you gig a lot, are very slim.

| Yeah, I mean the purpose of this tape isn't to give exposure to bands
we don't know about. It's to be able to associate music with
noters.
Proof by induction: imagine that the tape had NO Deccies on it. Do
you really think any of us would be interested in buying a tape with
just random music on it (i.e. no one we know, nor have heard before).

As there are probably thousands of CD's you know nothing about,
what motivated you to buy this particular one?

I bought "Shrapnel's Fretboard Frenzy", a collection of the
best of Shrapnel Records' guitar players all contributing a
song or 2.
I bought it because I like guitar work.

There are at least a dozen other guitar collections (IRS, GFTPM, Guitar

I'm baaaaccccck! :-)
Here's the latest. I've recieved a three tune submission from

say that one or two more multi-song submissions would just about
do it.
Remember the deadline is the 11th.

I recieved a submission from Dave Russo on friday, which brings
us up to ~80 minutes. Alan Starr has one song (~5minutes) which
will still leave 5 minutes left to go. Anyone have one tune they
could submit?
It's probably safe to start placing orders. I'll look into
shipping/tape costs this week and post the final amount.

1665.361 | Update | FSTTOO::GALLO | Spontaneous Harmony Singing | Thu Jan 10 1991 08:39 | 23 |
|
This is in the way of a general annoucement, so noone is surprised
when they recieve their copy of GN Vol II.
I took the liberty of arranging the order of the songs so that there
is some small degree of flow to the songs. What this means is that
instead of just being little groups of songs by each artist, I've
tried to mix up the submissions so that you don't have a bunch of
slow stuff or fast stuff (or jazz or acoustic...) all stuck together.
IMHO, it makes for a much more interesting tape.
As always the actual songs have not been EQ'd/remixed or altered
in any way.
Item the second:
The tape is just about finished, I'm waiting on a submission from
Alan Starr (Let's go dude!) to finish it up.

% In particular, the Identity states that the logo is a one-color logo: The
% letters are actually holes in the blocks, through which the background can
% be seen. Do not modify this code so that the letters are always white.

extract it and send it to your favorite local PostScript printer.

1665.370 | Also remember to include the postscript data parameter | GOES11::G_HOUSE | Walking the path of ToneQuest | Wed Jan 16 1991 10:47 | 12 |
| re: printing postscript files
Extract the note and trim off all the header information. The
postscript commands must be the first lines in the file. Then print
the file to a postscript capable printer (LPSxx,LN03R,etc.) using the
command:
$ PRINT/QUE=your-ps-printer-queue/PARAM=(DATA=POSTSCRIPT) filename
Hope this helps,
Greg

|
1665.372 | FYI | PNO::HEISER | Armageddon Appetite | Wed Jan 16 1991 11:21 | 5 |
| this is all I use, but I installed the LPS software so that the
PostScript queue has a PS_ prefix. The (DATA=POSTSCRIPT) isn't
necessary that way.
$ PRINT/QUE=PS_queuename filename

1665.373 | READ THIS NOTE!!! ;-) | FSTVAX::GALLO | Spontaneous Harmony Singing | Fri Jan 18 1991 11:24 | 14 |
|
For my own sanity, could those who are ordering tapes,
please send me mail indicating that? I need to know how
many tapes I'll need, etc.
Submittors, please remember that if *you* want a copy
of the tape, you have to let me know as well. If you want
me to copy over your submission tape, let me know that as
well..

1665.374 | Whatch that Data Post... | MOOV02::DERRICO | Stuck between Iraq & a hard place | Wed Jan 23 1991 11:59 | 8 |
| re - .372
DATA=POST is nessessary sometimes: Sometimes (due to something
in system software - in certain systems) the lps40's forget to
use PostScript so it has to be defined.

1665.375 | Mailings Have Begun... | FSTVAX::GALLO | Spontaneous Harmony Singing | Mon Jan 28 1991 09:28 | 17 |

I sent out a bunch of tapes this weekend, here's a (hopefully)
complete list:
Jeff Cooper
John D'errico
Dave Clark
Bob Conroy
Mike Ryan (Piced up in my office)
Dave Russo
Rick Calcagni
There's probably more folks, I just can't remember 'em all. If you sent
a check, rest assured that your tape will be sent.

1665.376 | Ordering Deadline Feb. 15th. | FSTVAX::GALLO | Spontaneous Harmony Singing | Wed Jan 30 1991 13:09 | 15 |
|
In order to "stimulate" business and get this GN vol2 monkey off my
back, I'm going to set a deadline of Feb. 15th for orders.
I've gotten a lot of folks telling me they'll order a tape, but
really not that many orders. I'm getting real busy in the new job
and want to wrap it up.
For you ZK folks, I'm keeping a small supply of tapes in my
cube. If you want to pick one up here, send me mail.

| Anybody up for a VOL.III ?
I'd be willing to put one together, on a few conditions:
> You send me the tape *exactly* as you want it to be heard -
I ain't eq'ing anything ! 8^)
> Send it in it's final form - I don't have a 4 track to do any
sort of a mixdown.
Aside from that, I'd be willing to do it. Lemme know what ya think !

| Doggone it, I may just un-ass some $$$ and get a recorder to do
this. I'm not playin in a band anymore, so I just sit around the house
dubbin away. What I'd really like to do tho is team up with someone who
can write lyrics. I can compose tunes well enough, but I'm a player and
not much of a songwriter. Yeah, this may be pretty good.
