1644.0. "Framus guitars?" by ASHBY::BEFUMO (Circling Tiger) Thu Jan 18 1990 07:36

    Anybody know anything about Framus guitars? The harmony note a few
    back started me thinking about some of the other half decent guitars
    that are now more or less defunct, and Framus was one that came to
    mind. I've only played on two, one 6-string acoustic, and a solid-body
    12-string electric with a built-in finger-controlled wah-wah.  Both
    where pretty decent instruments, especially the acoustic, and I think
    they were American made, but I know little else about them.

1644.1From Germany?AQUA::ROSTEveryone loves those dead presidentsThu Jan 18 1990 08:455

    Framus is a German firm, I believe. Maybe some European noters can
    confirm. I also think they're still in business?

I owned a 3/4 size framus once. They're nice guitars in their price range.

I used to see an occasional Framus when I was a teenager (back in the Bronze
Age). Some of them were industrial grade instruments capable of supporting
heavy gauge strings without flinching. They made good rhythm guitars, but I
didn't care for the lead or fingerpicking sound.

1644.4FRAMUS: MADE IN GERMANYRAVEN1::HBROWNTue Feb 06 1990 10:5912
    I remember Framus guitars back when I was in high school (late
    60's/early 70's time frame). Our family was stationed overseas
    (Turkey) and I played in a band in which both of our guitarists used
    Framus. If I remember correctly; Framus was made in Germany and they
    built guitars from low-end cheapies to very high quality instruments.
    Our lead guitarist had a Framus copy of the Gibson SG, as well as a
    Gibson SG, he said he preferred the Framus. FWIW.

    I also remember that Framus made the guitars that the lead quitarist
    (name?) for Queen used.

    I thought Brian May, lead guitarist w/Queen, usually used his own
    home made guitar ?
1644.6IS IT FRAMUS, OR HOME MADE?RAVEN1::HBROWNTue Feb 06 1990 12:4711

    RE:  .5
    You are correct, he did use his home made guitar. My understanding is
    that Framus liked the style so much that they got together with Brian
    May and marketed the thing. I also heard that Framus made a few exact
    duplicates of Brian's guitar in case something happened to his.

    Maybe someone else has some more info on this.

    Hmm...

    Is Framus associated with Guild? Because Guild certainly made (makes?)
    a Brian May signature guitar that's supposed to be an exact copy of the
    home-made one he's used for years.

    I wanted to check one out, but have yet to actually see one in a store.

1644.8I REMEMBER FRAMUSTROA09::BUCKTONTue Mar 26 1991 17:2212
    Yeah. I remember Framus, in fact I had a Framus 12 string from 1969 to
    about 1972, when it got destroyed by accident. The body was a little
    less thicker than most. Also at the nut end the head did not angle off
    at 45 degrees but extended off parallel to the neck making the lines of
    the whole guitar very flat.

    	I modified mine with a tele pickup. Sounded real nice, wanted to do
    the CSNY thing which was the rage back the.
