| On another subject.... in response to note 1640, here are the approximate
standard settings I use on the M1. The eq settings vary somewhat depending
on volume and whether the speaker has an open or closed back. Bear in mind
that I use either a les paul or an SG w/ humbuckers- I would use completely
different settings for single coil pickups.

I use the quad mode footswitch depending on choice of clean (no leds),
crunch (red), lead (green) or hot lead (red&green). Note: from the
front panel, you only have three preamp choices, not four as provided
by the footswitch.
The M1 has enough tonal flexibility for anyone to be able to develop
their own characteristic sound. The tone controls interact with each
other, so it takes some experimentation to find your own sound(s).
Enjoy,
Steve

| Ok, since there are so many people out there with M3s, I thought I'd
share a few setttings that I liked.
This is playing the thing through an Ampeg sealed back 4x12 cabinet
(with noname speakers) using a Charvel Model 4, so mileage may vary. I
kept the Reverb (on the back) set to 4 for the whole lot, I don't like
too much spring reverb. Remember that the lead and clean channels are
dependant on each other, so you need both the lead and clean volumes to
make the intended sound.
I'd be very interested in seeing settings other M3 owners use too.

Your right though, with EL34's, you loose a lot of bass. I say who
needs it anyway, thats what bass guitars are for ! Gimme loads of pinched
harmonics, squeels, raspes and a few dive bomber runs any day !
Now, 6L6's should give you a lot more bass response. EL34's are too soft
and compressed for good bass.

Oh yeah - all this was with my Les Paul, stright into the amp, using the

Here's the setting I found for the Quattro that I like a lot:

This is also similar to the mid-70s rock tone, maybe like early Faces or
Mick Taylor-era Stones. Again, its the LP straight into the Quattro.

I play my M3 as distorted as I can get it:
Bass=0
mid=8
treb=10
pres=10
OD=10
Leadvol=10
Master=?
There seems to be some bleed thru on my M3 with the OD up that high,
at high master volumes, so as the master goes up, the OD goes down
(to about 8 I think).
Also, I have VERY bassy cabs, so don't snicker at my bass being set to
0.

| I run the bass on my M3 from 1-2 unless I'm looking for a real warm clean
jazzy kind of sound (which I like, but don't use much).
I don't see how you can run the Presence at 10 though...SCREECH! I run
mine about 5-6.5 unless I *really* want to stick out, then it hits about 8.
Set higher then 8 it loses the smoothness and starts sounding like a cheap
solid state distortion box.
Treble varies from 6-8 generally and Midrange from about 5-9 depending on
the song. I usually have feedback problems with my Charvel if I pump up
the mids too much.
I have the Lead gain set to 10, the clean gain set to 6 and the lead master
set to about 7-8. This lets me get a great screaming lead sound, and I can
footswitch into a nice clean sound. The lead master at 7 gives me just a
hair more volume with the lead channel.

One of the big attributes of the M1 is the mean green LED mode.
Unlike the red LED (which the M1 and M3 have), the green mode give
the lead channel an upper-mid boost that is VERY Marshall-like.
I know nothing else is a Marshall.... not even an MP-1, right.
But I can get a good enough Marshall emulation to keep me from laying

The M3 I have has EL-34 power tubes. In the KH M3 owner's manual
(thanks Alan) it says that the EL34's have a much reduced bass
response. It also says that turning up the presence a lot will
reduce the effect of the other tone controls. I just cranked 'em
to get gain. I haven't tried it with the lead OD turned up past
5.5; maybe if I do I'll have to back off on some of the other stuff.
The owner's manual gives a suggested setting for 'metal lead' as
Treb Mid Bass LOD CL.Vol. L. Master Master Presence
8 9 5 10 - 10 to taste 9
which is pretty close to mine, but with more lead OD and less bass
