1620.0. "Good Deal/Bad Deal" by HPSTEK::PELLETIER (Nuthin's Shakin') Wed Jan 03 1990 11:23

    I'm wondering if I got a decent deal on a guitar I bought recently and
    thought this would be a good place to feel out market value. I bought
    a 1983 Gibson Les Paul Custom ... in '83 it had the tuners with the
    fold out cranks and there are some belt-buckle digs on the back and
    minor scratches on the front. Looks good, sounds great and plays real
    well. It's the standard black finish with gold hardware. Stop and
    think for a second what a fair price is.

    I paid $550 for it. I didn't shop around as much as I normally do, did
    I get a fair deal? Even if I didn't I think I'll get that much playing
    enjoyment out of it over the years.

1620.1good deal indeed!USRCV1::REAUMEKH,BC,LP,SGE,SP=MEWed Jan 03 1990 11:4410
      Sounds fair - I have a '83 L.P. Custom (candy apple red,fold out
    cranks,gold h/w, EMG p/u's) in about the same condition. It's been
    used but not abused. I figured I will sell it for around $500-550.
    New Les Paul Customs are EXPENSIVE, $1645 I think!
      I picked up a Showcase edition Les Paul that came with EMG's and
    a great gray/black sunburst finish (hardware is black). I liked
    the looks of it so much I bought it. It plays as well as my Custom
    did.

    I picked up a New Les Paul Custom vintage cherry burst about 6 months
    ago with a case for $1,150.
    If your guitar came with a case, then you got a good deal.
    Used les pauls are fairly common around here and good deals come
    and go frequently.As I recall Gibson does sell Seconds and you should
    watch out for them but they are clearly stamped near the bridge.

    The LP Custom I have is a second though I can't see what the flaw is.
    Its an early 70's one & it has a 2 (to denote a second) stamped on the
    back of the headstock above the made in USA & serial number stamps.
    If you're fussy about seconds it's a good idea to check here just in
    case.

    Cheers

    It's not a second and it came with a nice hardcase ... furry lining and
    all. Thanks for the input! I think it was at least fair and probably
    a good deal after reading the replies.
