1602.0. "Comments sought: Bartolini GRT on Rick 4001" by NWD002::TUTAK_PE () Tue Dec 19 1989 16:08
For the past 16 years or so, I've been using a (basically) stock 1974
Rickenbacker 4001 bass, natural finish, ivory binding, excellent
condition.
Over the years, I've used the instrument basically as is, the only
modification being replacing the original Grover machine heads with
Schallers, back in '78. And it was worth the money.
Now, some years later, I'm thinking of another modification (I move
slowly). I want the instrument to have a bit more low-end sustain and tonal
versatility (i.e. wider spectrum of timbre via the on-board controls).
I am being steered by my technician toward using low-impedance
Bartolini GRT pickups in both the bass and high positions, and adding
a Schaller bridge to increase the sustain. The use of these specific
product sets takes into account the fact that they will not necessitate
altering the instrument cosmetically.
So, if anyone can provide input/advice/comments as to the following,
I'd much appreciate it:
-Has anyone had any enperiences with using the Bartolini set on
Ricks or any other basses ? I'm not too familiar with them. Comments,
negative/neutral/positive are solicited....
-I realize I've already altered the original bass by adding the
Schaller heads, therefore, its not as-built. If I add substantial
mods to the pickup system and mechanics, what do you think it will
do to the market value of the instrument ? I don't expect to sell
it, but I am curious in that regard.
FYI, the strings I use are the Dean Markley Blue Steel roundwounds
(the cryogenics), and my playing style is almost exclusively pizz,
little popping or slapping, and I use it for jazz and rock, if that
bears any relationship in your replies...
Thanks for your opinions, etc.....
