Ok, here's my problem. I'm trying to pick up a mucho cheapo bass amp for a friend for Christmas. I've located two likely candidates; a used PV TKO-80 and a used PV Bassic-40, each for $140. Can anyone out there give any info on these? I believe they both have 12"s and I'm guessing one is 80w and the other 40w. Anything at all you could tell about these would be really appreciated. Also, if anyone has a used bass amp in the < $150 range, let me know. /rick

Surprise, Rick....the TKO 80 is only 40 watts RMS. About 1981, Peavey upgraded the TKO to 65 watts and a 15" speaker (model TKO 65), and created the Basic 40 which is essentially the old TKO 80. Confused yet? At the same time, the 50 watt TNT 100 was upgraded to the 130 watt TNT 130, which replaced the 130 watt Combo series III which was upgraded to the 210 watt Combo 300. The TKO/Basic have pre/post gain controls, three band passive EQ (I think that they added a presence control and effects loop on the Basic 40) 12" generic Peavey speaker. At the same price, I'd probably go for the newer amp, eh? BTW, since then the Basic was upgraded to 50 watts (Basic 50) and now, still at 50 watts, the Basic 60; these sell new for about $250. |
