1511.0. "PA Multicore/stage boxes" by GIDDAY::COOK (I didn't do it!! ) Mon Oct 09 1989 02:54

I was wondering if anybody has had much experience with PA multicore
and stage boxes. What I need to do is to add a foldback split to each mic
input of a multicore such that:

    			 XLR ---------------- XLR
    	Mic/DI --------------| |------------ Foldback desk
    			     | Stage box |
    			     | |
    			     ----------------
    				    |
    				    | Multicore
    				    | to
    				    | Front of house.

From what I have seen before , the stage box is passive so my
question is how is it normally done.( transformer coupled ??? )
I am planning on building a 16 ch set up for a PA.

The splitter is just as you describe for desks with trans-
former isolated mic inputs. Back when most desks had discrete
component unbalanced inputs (transistors), transformers had to
be mounted in the mic splitter/snake box. Now most commercial
desks have transformer inputs. Check both your desks for them.

Without isolation, varying the channel level on one desk will
affect the level of signal on the channel at the other desk.

You can check by building a one channel splitter, setting up
both desks, vary the input attenuation pads, and listen for
    	any change in level.

The front of house desk I will be using is a Tascam M320 with I think
just a balanced differential opamp setup on the input stage like everything
else these days. The foldback desk input is the same.
