| It could be the tubes. I had a similar effect on my Hiwatt when a
preamp tube socket was loose, so it was moving around. It went away
when I replaced that bad socket and all the preamp tubes.

The reason I ask is because I thought there was a product called
"Groove Tubes" available for Mesa Boogies and wondered how they
compared to the originals.

| Mesa Boogie sells tubes, so does Groove Tubes. I believe you can get
matched sets from either vendor. Groove Tubes is just another tube
vendor, they sell tubes for most popular amps.
The advantage I see of buying Groove Tubes is that they rate the tubes,
hard (clean, more resistant to distortion) to soft (will distort
earlier), so you have a little more control over the sound of your amp.
I think with most of the other tube vendors you take your chances.

| Thanks for the info everyone. I ended up ordering the tubes from
Boogie. In case anyone else needs the ordering information in the
future, here is their address and telephone #:
Mesa Boogie
1317 Ross St.
Petaluma, CA 94952-6503
(707) 778-6565
BTW, the prices they quoted me were the same as in .3. If you have
them COD'd, they charge you for shipping and handling, so it is
best to prepay or charge them (they will then waive this expense).

| I would suspect not only the tube, but if it's a combo amp I'd consider
the tube SOCKETS. It seems that ll the vibration from the speaker will
sometimes (it happened on 2 different boogies to me) cause this
problem.
I have since switched to using only amp head/speaker cab combinations.
Re: .-1, Boogie is having a hard time getting tubes from China which is
where they have to go now that Sylvania has decided to get "out of the
business".
Hope this helps.

1483.10 | Boogie reverb problem (it's on... it's off...) | EARRTH::ABATELLI | Who knew? | Mon Aug 31 1992 08:21 | 18 |
| I'm having a problem with the reverb on my MK-2c head. It'll work,
then it won't, then I'll give it a "mechanical adjustment" by tapping
the amp (in standby mode so as not to have the reverb tank kill my
speakers) and then it'll work the rest of the night. Has anyone had
this problem before? I replaced the reverb driver tube a few months
ago as well as all the preamp tubes (using Mesa tubes), but can't help
feeling this is just a loose wire somewhere although I haven't been able
to find it. I checked all the connections to and from the tank to the
chassis, but that doesn't fix it either. I replaced the cable with
other RCA type cables to see if there was a break within the wire, but
the problem is still there, so I went back to using the original lead
wires.
Any ideas? Anyone else had (or have) this problem?
Thanks in advance,
Fred

| Hi Fred,
If it were me, I'd open the tank and see if I couldn't spray some WD40
into the coil/inductor on either end of the spring.
I haven't looked inside a reverb tank for years so maybe they do
things differently, but it seems to me I remember doing this to one of
my old amps that had the same problem.

Check out the connections inside the pan from the rca jack to the
transducer/coil. I would not recomend using wd40 on any of it.....
You may just have a loose internal wire.... which is not uncommon.
The biggest problem is getting the pan out of the case as they Loctite
the screws.....:^(

That was actually the first thing I checked since Fender always had
problems with the wire breaking at the coil *in* the tank itself, but it
looked OK. I'll keep lookin... maybe an internal break? I'll replace

1483.18 | Easy fix... only time will tell if it's really fixed. | LUNER::ABATELLI | Who knew? | Tue Sep 15 1992 12:09 | 21 |
| Here's the deal... I "cleaned" up all the RCA type connectors including
the jack on the tank itself, plugged the wires back in and VIOLA,
MEGA-REVERB! Who knew? Maybe it was a poor connection, maybe a
bad wire that somehow fixed itself when I disconnected the input/
output wires on the tank, but if it works... I would guess at this
point that a poor plug/receptical connection was at fault. Only time
will tell.
BTW, the Mesa/Accutronics reverb tank has the coil wires going INTO the
coil and does not have wiretaps on the outside like the older Fenders
did (foiled again!) so replacing those connector wires could be alittle
tricky (not impossible if I find it necessary, but tricky). I did the
pull the coil wires (located in the tank) while the amp is on trick and
didn't lose any reverb when I was messing around, so I guess at this point
those lead wires are OK (subject to change right?).
Just thought I'd post a status report! ;^)
Rock on,
Fred (who still likes the Boogie/Fender/Altec combination ALOT)

| RE: .18 Reverb problem UPDATE
It's March 12, 1993 and the reverb hasn't crapped out on me yet, so I
guess a dirty connection was all it was. One thing though, I wanted to
get a fuller, rounder reverb tone (gee... like an old Fender maybe ;) )
so I'm picking up a *3* spring (longer delay type) Accutronics tank for
my MK2 head. One thing I never liked (read that as "hated") was the
crappy reverb sound in early Boogies, so while at Harvey's music,
Harvey listened to it, then ran into his back room and came out with a
Accutronics catalog, read my reverb tank model number and matched it
to a 3 spring unit. The problem with my original tank is that it's set
up for a "short delay". Well, I want a longer delay so it'll sound like
reverb instead of some cheap delay box... YUCK! One major strike against
Mesa, although I'm told they sound alot better now than they used to.
Gawd, I hope so....
I'm picking it up tonight after work so I'll report my finding next
week.
Rock on,
Fred (who can't understand how Mesa can make a nice amp, but
offer that crappy sounding reverb - in older models)

What did they do to try to fix the problem? Is it under warranty?
Could be anything....
I would suggest a call to Mesa and talk to a Tech there, but keep in
mind you may be dealing with a problem internal to the transformer.
I assume DJM has checked out the power supply and simple stuff...
Poor grounding or shielding could be contributing to the noise...
Mesa has always been top's in customer service in my experiance and
from what I've heard....

Boogies ain't exactly made from a design that's just now making the

Why did the shop try a couple times to fix a "nature of the beast"

My question is semi-sarcastic. Did they charge you for attempting to
fix this? Why did they waste their time?

I have a good friend who has a mesa boogie power amp ( I can't
remember the model number) an a transformer blew up in it.
To cut a real long story short when he got the part (brought
in to Australia by only one importer)it still had the original
Mesa Boogie invoice in it.
The importer had sent him a bill for $367 AUS (approx $300 US)
.......the mesa boogie invoice $24.67 US!!!!!!!!!!
That is the biggest rip off of all time. I was wondering if
someone could help out and If I sent them a postal money order
for the part if they would purchase it and ship it to me,
I am certain my friend would not be adverse to paying a small
handling fee to cover any inconvienience.
The Mesa Boogie Part no is #561200.
I just remembered it is out of a Strategy 400.

clean. You can probably guess that the vintage has a bit of a bite,
while the modern is much more compressed sounding. I programmed up

| Re: Daddy's Junky Music repair
It definitely sounds like a "We don't know how to fix it but we won't
admit it".
As positive as I am about buying things from DJM, I will also say that
my experience with the repair shop has generally been pretty bad.
I once had an Ensoniq synth in bunch of times with an intermittant
problem and each time they said "we can't reproduce it". It later
turned out to be a COMMON Ensoniq problem that there was a (free)
ECO for.
IMHO, a good repair shop would've got that on the first visit. As it
was, I had to wait until the thing got so bad it barely worked at all.
I remember one gig where I was rebooting it every 4th songs or so.
