Boss has added an new multi-effects pedal, the BE-5B for bassists. According to the new GP, it is a floor unit, like the BE-5 for guitar, and has compressor/limiter, exciter/distortion, graphic EQ and delay/flange/chorus on board. No idea on price, but I would guess in the $350-400 ballpark lioke the BE-5. I could have used one of these five years ago when I was doing top 40. Brian

1481.1 | Opinions on Boss BE-5 please | MALLET::BARKER | Pretty Damn Cosmic | Mon Sep 18 1989 10:54 | 15 |
I am attracted by the price of the BE-5 (guitar not bass unit as in .0) which is only 199 (approx $300) here in the UK. I haven't actually been in to a shop to try one out yet (I always get embarrassed by the 13yr old kids playing 10x better than me) so I wondered if anyone else has tested or actually bought one. The specifications sound attractive :- Digital Delay / Chorus / Overdrive / Compressor/Limiter / Noise Gate the first four operated by individual pedals. From looking at an example the controls and range of settings for each effect seem to be exactly the same as the standard Boss stomp boxes. Does anyone know if they really are ? Ordinarily the Digital Delay retails for about 120 so getting everything else for 79 looks like a very good deal indeed. Apart from the savings over buying the individual boxes there is the compact size, improved tidiness & lack of wires etc. Nigel

My understanding is that the BE-5 unit uses the same circuitry as the stomp boxes. They are just joined together in their own case and is MUCH cheaper (and tidyer) than having 5 seperate stomp boxes. The only disadvantage I can see is that you can't write programs with it as you can with the ME-5, but if you aren't interested in this then for 200 quid you can't go wrong! -Tony

The BE-5B has arrived finally. Saw but did not hear one today. Quoted a price of $345 at Daddy's in Shrewsbury, MA. You get four effects: Limiter (threshold and level controls), Overdrive/enhancer (drive, tone, level and enhance controls), ten band graphic EQ (starting at 31.5Hz and going up in octaves, with a level control) and a delay/chorus/flanger (six knobs total, including "effect level", this is a wet/dry mix, maybe?). Conspicuously absent is the noise supressor of the BE-5. I still may audition one, but the mix of effects isn't quite what I can use. Brian

I think I'll stick with the SGE for my bass rig. At $345 for the pedal board, I would expect at least a noise suppressor. I'd spend the extra $200 for the versatility of the SGE. Plus I can use it for alot more things (4-track=drums,vocals,guitars,etc...). Mr. Ed.... |
