Yeah, it was. He's *real* happy with it, and it seems to work great with his
MP-1. But I just wanted to know if anyone here had any opinions on them (ie.
reliability, value [bang for buck], comparative amps, etc.)

1477.4 | great power amp! | HAZEL::STARR | We're beating plowshares into swords... | Thu Nov 02 1989 13:28 | 12 |
| Thanx for the info Mike. I got some recommendations for the QSC amps in the
COMMUSIC file, and from my guitar teacher (who has one in his rack). I ended
up puchasing a QSC 1200, which is 100wpc, or 150 watts in mono. This is a real
nice, clean amp (solid state). It takes up 3 rack spaces, and cost only $325
used.
I'm currently running from the guitar into a Chandler Tube Driver, then into a
Digitech RDS3600 delay, into the QSC. Simple, but very effective for what I
want, and nice and portable. I play it through a 4x12, but can use the rack
with a smaller cab if need be. I'm very happy with it!

How are these amps? I got rid of my Carvers a few months ago, now
I'm looking again. Any one no of prices? I'm looking for two amps
at about 250 watts and one at about 100 watts.

Volume.
That's it! (And IMO, that's all a power amp should have!)

Agreed. The MOSvalve has presence though. I don't know that
this is necessary.

I think you're both nuts! The key to any REAL tube output stage is the
presence circuit! If you want a good PA-type (clean) sounding power
amp, vol knobs are all you need (sometimes not even that!), but for
guitar purposes you NEED the presence!!

Who said anything about tubes??? Solid state (for a power amp)!
Power (imo) should be just that - power! It shouldn't change the tone at all
(or at least as little as possible). All its there for is to amplify the input
signal.

Boys, boys, boys... Don't confuse hifi and guitar amplification.
The resulting tone from *all* contributors is important in guitar
amps, but straight, clean amplification is the goal for hifi.

re: Power Amp coloration
Think about it. If the power amp didn't color the sound, everyone
would just use the cheapest, most reliable power amp they could
find. Discounting snob appeal, folks buy what sounds good to 'em,
not the cheapest.
