1423.0. "keyboards anyone ?" by PAULUS::BAUER (Richard Bauer SAM Frankfurt) Tue Aug 15 1989 13:46

Hi everybody !

I just found out about that notesfile recently. I'm playing guitar (and in a
previous life also bass) too. But playing guitar (especially electric guitar)
alone isn't that much fun and I don't have the time to play in band regularly.
So the way out of the dilemma is offered by new technologie. Therefore I bought
a YAMAHA V50 with a built in sequencer which should act as "my band". So my
question is:

	- is there a notesfile for keyboards as well ?

	thanks and best regards

		Richard

P.S.: I'll come back on the guitars when I learned my lessons on keyboards.

Commusic certainkly is the closest thing we have to KEYBOARDS although
it is really more general than just keyboards. Its more equipment
oriented (MIDI, drum machines, mixers, tape decks, etc.).

And there's little in the way of discussion of keyboard techniques.

I've often thought of creating a keyboards file, however I'm concerned
about the overlap between KEYBOARDS and COMMUSIC. The COMMUSIC file
is my favorite notesfile - the information, expertise and
attitude in that file is nothing short of astounding. I personally
would be reluctant to start a new file that might in some way
    compromise the COMMUSIC file.

Sell that V-50 before it's too late!!!! Forget you ever saw the
letters M*I*D*I !!!!! I thought that having automated
accompaniment would encourage me to practise more, but now I
spend a lot of practise time screwing around with keyboards &
computers & non-guitar stuff... Hurry, before your strings rust!

P.S. BTW, how much do you want for that V-50?

Not too long ago I decided that a guitar was just not "do-able"
on synths, so I sprung for a real one. (Tokai strat and an adorable
little Peavey Rage amp that suits my needs quite well)

Having a fairly good sized MIDI studio is probably the best thing
that could happen to my guitar playing. (I use the term loosley).

I have an absolutely tireless 'canned band' that never bitches about
playing the same riff over and over, never shows up late for practice,
and never drinks my beer. (You'll find out that the phrase "never
borrows money" one usually finds here isn't quite true... MIDI doesn't
really borrow money, it just sucks up anything resembling 'extra
    cash'.)

It's really alot of fun, which is not meant as an afront to playing
    with real humans.

    Best o' luck to ya...

You can forget about the V80. It was announced some time ago that they
were cancelling production on that one.

Yamaha has been very quiet about any high-end synth products. Some say
that they may even be getting out of the synth business. Personally, I hope
not - companies like Roland need some stiff competition to keep them humble.

Even if Yamaha-ha gets out of the synth business under that name,
it still owns KORG, or is that Roland. I think its KORG.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Friday, my laborious search for a keyboard/synth/composer/sequencer et
al ended. I was looking at a Roland E5 "Intelligent synthesizer" at
Daddy's for $800. I called Ted Herbert's in Manchester to see if he had
one or anything else comparable. He said to me "look dude, no need to
spend that much for what you wanna do." He had a Yamaha PSR 400 for
$450 that makes the E5 look stupid. I went, I saw, I purchased.

I can't tell you how delighted I am. You see I'm not a keyboard player
and all this technology is new to me. I hardly even know what
intelligent questions to ask. I was looking for something with a goodly
level of automation so that I can play along with on my guitar. The
Yamaha has 101 preset rhythms and accompaniments, 101 different
instrument sounds (voices?), you can sequence a whole bunch of stuff (I
don't know the specs, but its more than adequate for what I'll do for
awile to come.) This is one outrageous machine. Anybody looking for a
first machine, take my advice and make your life simple - just get one
of these. Take the time to learn how to play/play with it rather than
search the whole technology tryin to understand what devices do what
like I tried; its confusing as hell for a novice like me.

I have since been back to Daddy's to look at the E5 now that I know a
little better what I was looking at. The dude at Ted Herbert was right,
the Yamaha makes the E5 look stupid. Its got twice as much stuff built
in plus the sequencer ( I think thats the right term - you can "record"
different passages and layer them to create your own stuff). the other
thing I noticed was that the keys themselves were a bit more
substantial on the Yamaha. The one thing I noticed that the Roland had
that was pretty neat was a fade in/fade out button. The Roland also had
reverb but the next model up from mine (PSR 500) offers it too and then
    some.

All in all, I feel like a kid who just got THE toy he wanted for a long
time. What a great feeling! What a great time to be alive and enjoy
things like keyboard technology where you can have a whole orchestra at
your beck and call, and they don't argue with you or amongst
    themselves.

    "sakman"

BTW - the dudes name at Ted Herbert's is John. I don't know his last
name yet, but I will. The guy steered me right, gave me a great deal,
and knows his business well. He's been there since '73. Maybe tell him
he got some favorable press here amongst us deccies and he'll dig a
    little deeper in his discount.
