1374.0. "Yamaha Image Custom Opinions?" by RAVEN1::BLAIR (Only rock and roll, but I like it) Wed Jul 12 1989 10:25

Has anybody seen/heard/played any of the new Yamaha Image Custom
electrics yet? They've been in GP ads the last few issues and look
nice. Double cutaway, mahogany body, dark maple fret board, fancy
inlays and gold hardware. They also make a less frills "standard"
model. It's a big body guitar but not a hollow body. The shops
here don't have any yet (S.C.) but they said the fancy one costs
    $1500.00 (yikes!)

1374.1But do the Led's flash? when you play faster?REGINA::BUSENBARKWed Jul 12 1989 14:176
The Yamaha Image Series comes in 3 flavors Standard,Deluxe and
Custom. The Custom which is what you've probably seen in ads has
led's(red) for fret markers :^( ,active electronics, trem etc..
The Standard and the Deluxe are both a step down one of which has
a stop tailpiece. I might have some literature hanging around still
    if your interested....
1374.2A really wonderful axeSUBWAY::BAUEREvan Bauer, DBS Tech Support, NYMon Oct 02 1989 21:3217
Went in to the Yamaha show room on 57th street today and played one
(through a "Pocket Rocket" -- which surpisingly did all right as a head
phone amplifier). I think I'm in love.

The SOB is pretty, sustains seemingly forever while the active pickups
give you all kinds of wonderful tone control (even through the
aforementioned pseudo-amp). The neck is quick feels like glass and was
quick. Fretboard was "Ebonized Brazilian rosewood, according to the
book, felt like ebony to me. I went in to look at the SA-2000 which
felt great but is either set up poorly or real dead as you work further
up the neck and then tried this hummer. I was able to get reasonable
jazz and blues sounds out of the active electronics (without knowing
waht I was doing or benefit of a real amp) and boy was it playable.

I'm going to give Mandolin Brothers a call (they stock Yamaha) and find
out what a real price on one of these things is, then try to figure out
how to explain its presence to the wife (I didn't buy it, I found it).

1374.4There are 3 modelsRAVEN1::BLAIRWookin' pa nubWed Oct 04 1989 13:5613

I believe that the Yammy comes in three models. The custom has
the fancy inlay, gols plating and side led's for fret markers.
The standard is the base model for hundreds less. It is nickel
plated, no coil covers, or fancy inlays. There is also a "middle"
model which is "just right", but I can't remember the name of it.
Rhythm City in Atlanta sells 'em. If you want to compare your
locations prices to down here, let me know. Be sure and let us
know how you like it when you get it. I think they are GREAT
looking axes and have heard they sound similar to LP's, but I
haven't heard or touched one yet.
