1365.1 | BIG SOUND w/ bass in yer face! | USRCV1::REAUME | undergoing behavior analysis | Thu Aug 03 1989 16:56 | 10 |
| I picked up the CD just yesterday. NICE STUFF! I don't remember
all the titles but I've listened through the whole thing twice
and it's good. "Addicted to that rush" is a kiiler. Nothing really
mellow as seems to be the case with a lot of rockers lately,
seems every album has its thorn! but it's solid, melodic, tangible
material. If you like Winger/new Bad Co/early VH, you'll like this.
BTW - The new White Lion sounds good too, I picked it up at the
same time.

I was impressed (depressed).

I'm sure I've come to the right place to have a couple of questions
answered about watching a live Mr. Big concert tape. I am not a guitar
player so bear with me.
What is the technique used by Paul Gilbert (as well as hundreds of
other players) that causes a note to "squeal" when played? I know its
not feedback. I love to hear this done, and watching Gilbert play live
this technique really is apparent. Also how is it done? Remember I'm
not a guitar player so take it easy on me!
One more question. I noticed that Billy Sheehan's bass had an odd
looking fretboard. Some of the frets looked like an insert of some
kind was inlayed making it look "scalloped"? What is the purpose of
this? Thanks for any info...........

If by squeal you mean pick harmonics, it's done by picking a note and
then immediately muting the string with your finger. If you were to
hold the pick so that the tip protruded only the slightest
distance from your 1st finger, you'll be able to pick the note and
then have your finger immediately come in contact with the string.
That's not a very good description, but look for a topic about
harmonics and you'll learn more.....

| the scalloped neck is to fine tune a players vibrato. it's really a
matter of player preference.

| Harmoninc pikcing..
actually it's not --quite-- muting, although it's
really the only word that fits,,, I like to
think of it as picking the note with like
50% pick, and 50% skin off your thumb...
It's one of those things like snapping your fingers
the first time,, you'll eventually make it happen,
and after awhile, you'll do it when ever you want.

... and then you'll cringe everytime you hear someone do it. :-)
(Just kidding, it's a cool trick.)

| I've always called this technique "pinched" harmonix, as I've
always sort've "pinched" the string between my pick and thumb...
Definately a favorite sound of mine too...

Man, I shiver thinking about it... One time I had a little slice
on my thumb, and pinched the high E string, and it went right into
the fresh boo-boo and I'll tell ya, I felt it all the way to my toes!
Yeow!

| it usually comes about when ya have the dreaded
hangnail on yer thumb, yea, it makes a mess of the
strings too... I use the 'squeal' frequently, and
it's a hard habbit to break when the afore mentioned
condition persists...

| oh reminds me of yummy war story..
ya know suspended ceilings ? and we all know how
easy it is to hang par lamps from the cieling? all
clubs have em...
well I poke my hand into one of the tiles, at a club
we're about to play at.. and jammed some splinters
plywood between my left middle finger tip and the nail...
I wailed! it hurt loads... and of course this was before
the gig during set up... what that stuff was doing up there
was a mystery.. (obviously a booby trap for light setups.)
I still don't know how I got through the night,, I just remember
trying to clean it out as much as I could, but still played with
a significant amount pain and the strings were toast by 4th set..
...I could go into gory details above yellow oozy stuff,
but i'll wait for Monday's lunch break..
ahh the hazards of the gig... (I can't wait to read the
war stories that this starts!!!)

| Billy Sheehan plays a Yamaha bass that he helped design. The funny look
neck is due to the rectangular fret markers.
